Rabid Models is a small internet business that designs and markets profile foamie model airplanes. We specialize in twin-engine warbirds from WWII but there are a few other types represented as well. This KZread channel is where we collect & present videos of our models flying, and also other interesting videos of the full-size planes that are the inspiration for these models.

    SUrely you'd want full flaps for landing? Other than that ... great plane, great plane, great landing, great video. I would have used a much longer final to make sure I was stable on approach, but what would I know? Also ... return seats and tray tables to upright is a pre-landing thing, not a taxiiing thing. What I am saying is that I am exceedingly envious of your flying skills.

    The flaps were down full---don't call me Shirley. It was very windy - like landing a full-size plane in a 200 mph crosswind - so that's why it was being bumped around.

    @@foamerbird Thanx for that. I'm used to looking at full size airliners where full flaps is like 55 degrees. This shirley didnt look like that. But of course I'll take your word for it. Thanx for getting back to me. Love your work.

    Does it use prop savers or did the landing break the motor mounts?

  • @foamerbird

    Hello Mike, on this plane I have prop savers so upon landing, the O-ring allowed the prop to pivot backwards without damaging anything.

    Congratulations! You seem to have that sorted out very well. I would have thought that the F104 would be one of the more difficult and unforgiving planes to get flying well. I have a profile EDF Alpha jet ( very semi scale) which is a real pussycat but after seeing your effort I think I might try a Fouga magister. It has a similar mid wing , long nose and short tail moment like your F104 but a much bigger wing area. Can I ask where the CG ended up? I heard you mention its much further forward due to the wing strakes. I have made a small balsa chuck glider version of the Fouga Magister but I cant get a reliable glide so far.

    which fan was used and 4s might improve speed?

  • @foamerbird
    @foamerbird Жыл бұрын

    The model used a NEEWER™ "Mystery Motors" 50mm 8-bladed EDF rated at 5800kv. This was the highest-thrust EDF we could find in this size and weight. The EDF and motor weighs 56gms and produces 386gm of thrust. We used a 1500mah 3-cell pack. A 4-cell pack would increase the speed but the battery would be too heavy for the model. A small 4-cell, say 1000mah, would mean you'd only have about 2 minutes of flight time.

    @@foamerbird Thank you for sharing mate ;) any tips for the COG??

  • @foamerbird
    @foamerbird Жыл бұрын

    @@rcostasbuild1165 the RM plane is a profile model, the front side pieces act like wing extensions. So the CG is located right where the LE of the wing meets the side of the fuselage. 6 inches ahead of the aileron hinge line. That is very close to the exact center of the model, 24 inches back from the nose. If you make a model that is constructed differently the CG probably won't be the same.

    This model was custom-made and finished for a customer, sadly there are no plans to make any more of this one. It took a long time to build and we don't have the time to produce plans and instructions. It was made from 5mm Bluecore foam (fan-fold insulation) over a typical former and stringer fuselage. The wings are undercambered with CF spars. Total weight including the battery was only 3.5lbs.

  • @foamerbird
    @foamerbird4 жыл бұрын

    Hello, there was a great deal of discussion about this on Hobby Squawk. I did a lot of flight testing and found that the recommended CG is way too far back. Mine is set at 55mm back from the LE. I took out the tail weights and used a smaller battery. I also cut down the amount of elevator and raised the TE of the entire stab about 3mm. Others have said they like the CG at 60 or 65, but this plane flies a lot better if you set it at 55 to 60 (70 is way too far back) and make these other modifications.

    I love this - was searching for diy fueslage and your pics popped up - can you share instructions to build? what material did you cover wings with ?

  • @foamerbird
    @foamerbird5 жыл бұрын

    John, we built this large model and the B17 eight years ago as custom-made products for customers. We stopped doing that because of the great amount of time and labor required. These aren't available as kits because of the same reason - it would take too much time and labor to make instructions! The fuselage is made using formers and stringers, and then it is sheeted one panel at a time using fan-fold insulation. The wings are made from a single sheet of fan-fold using ribs (the wings are undercambered, like a frisbee) with CF spars. The resulting model is extremely light and flies with 100watt Blue Wonder motors (only 10 amps each).

    Richard, that little box is 3D-printed, there's one version that holds the Mobius camera and another that holds the RunCam. It was designed to mount on a pylon with attachments that match the hardware found on Freewing jet models. Look on Thingiverse for "SleekBox".
