  Congrats on finishing this repair! I did two Philips reel to reel machines last year, and they absolutely exhausted my patience for that brand, even though neither was as bad as yours. One tip for adjusting 4-track heads like on this recorder - use a stereo tape and put it in parallel mode, then adjust until it sounds right. It will be VERY noticeable when you hit the sweet spot. One other tip - put some oil on the felt clutch pads under the two reel tables. I know it seems counter intuitive, but it really helps with the smooth running of these mechanisms.

  Thanks for the tips. I used a commercially recorded stereo tape to align the head in parallel mode and that worked well indeed.

  I Recently bought a Philips 22AH561 its pretty much same Amplifier, only difference it's the VU meters are fisheye type amazing sound, thank you for your Videos they are going to be helpful in case i need to repair mine, just subscribed

  Thanks a lot! My Stanmore 1 powers up and connects to Bluetooth but there is no audio, even not when I send music through the input through cable. Strangely, when I switch it off the led remains on. Any idea where to start?

  That sounds like an issue with the amplifier. I would start looking in that area. Might be a blown transistor or mosfet in the amp.

  Hoi Kristof, dank voor je mooie video's. Als vijfjarig jochie (in 1962) stond ik met open bek te staren naar de bandrecorder van mijn vader, waarschijnlijk de voorganger van dit model, ik herken de interne mechaniek duidelijk, het uiterlijk was net iets anders, maar soortgelijk. Als vierjarige had ik de afstemknop van de middengolf al verkend. Hilversum, Droitwich, Veronica en Waver, de Kleine Klaas wist ze te vinden. Maar nu kon je geluid ook nog opnemen en de Kleine Klaas was geflabbergaasd. Terwijl mijn moeder de huisarts belde om te vernemen hoe mijn onderkaak weer omhoog kon en mijn vader mij de werking van de machine verklaarde, nam de frustratie toe. Ik was immers vijf en mocht dus nergens aankomen. Maar op mijn zesde verjaardag kreeg ik een fantastisch cadeau! Een bandje om mee te oefenen! Het was een goedkoop rotbandje, in de eerste plaats omdat we rasechte ollanders waren, maar natuurlijk ook omdat mijn vader verwachtte dat ik het bandje zou verknoeien. Ik heb dat inderdaad gedaan, maar pas dertig of veertig jaar later. Ik werd beroeps en werkte met machines als de A80 en A820. Oh well! Wat betreft die wow en flutter... de "rondheid" van je aandukrol doet daar niets mee. De capstan moet een "toerental en rondheid" definieren, de aandrukrol drukt alleen maar aan. De kracht van aandrukking is waar het om gaat, die moet voldoende zijn. Verenstaal verliest veerkracht door de decennia, een nieuw veertje doet wonderen. Hoeft geen origineel veertje te zijn, experimenteer maar. Nogmaals: verenstaal verliest veerkracht door de decennia, het wordt slap. Nu ben ik gepensioneerd Kristof en ik geniet van je video's.   Hoi Klaas! Bedankt voor de leuke reactie. Ikzelf ben geboren in de jaren 80, dus ik heb helemaal geen voorgeschiedenis met bandopnemers. Bij mij waren het cassettes, maar het effect was hetzelfde. Voordat ik aan deze bandopnemer begon, had ik zelfs nog nooit met een bandopnemer gewerkt, laat staan eentje gerepareerd. Bedankt voor je complimenten over mijn kanaal. Blijf zeker kijken, zou ik zeggen, want ik heb nog meer dan 40 bandopnemers in stock dus er volgen er zeker nog!

  Hi Kristof, wow this really is a case of victory against the odds! That head / pressure pad adjustment was typical of Philips - I don't think they ever considered that someone would have to re-adjust it outside of the factory where they probably had special alignment tools / jigs to do the job easily. I note that you added your own blood -curdling curse to many I have uttered while working on Philips equipment. I once wished Phillips design engineers an eternity of sitting bare-bottomed on splintery wooden benches in a cold dark cellar, forever re-stringing the dial cords they designed ... And that belt residue! Anyway you have certainly won this one. It's a great little unit and works probably as well as it did when new. Loved the tape recorded intro by the way! Cheers

  Thanks a lot! Yes, this one definitely took more time that expected, but I really like how it turned out. Next time I'll try to be a bit less naive when thinking that restoring a Philips will be a straightforward task. But then again, I also said that last time.

  Great work! Looks really nice now. Is the center of the pinch roller made of plastic as it looks to be? I see the replacements you can get (for about 28USD) have brass center. If it's plastic, one option could be to drill out the worn out part in the center and inserting a brass tube there.

  Thanks. That might indeed be an idea, but at the moment it's perfectly acceptable. I think the majority of W&F came from the misaligned pressure pad.

  Pinch roller is worn, is "ovalized", we can see a bit of wobbling on it. Maybe changing it will solve wow and flutter. 🙂

  As I said in the video, a new pinch roller for this one is easily 25-30 euros. Not worth it for this model. And you won't notice it, unless you're playing classical music.

  I honestly can't remember. I don't think I filmed it because I don't always film all basic operations like cleaning switches. I probably just used my standard procedure which consists of Kontakt 60, WL and 61.

  Its strange that it is hot chassis radio and it has phono input connected directly to chassis. In other radios there was always small insulation transformer for this input. Also ground and antenna were separated from chassis by "safety" capacitors of its time - something like 1n-5n/1kV.

  Hi Kristof Great to get a result like that after so much hard and dirty work! Are you still getting belt residue on your fingers? From my experience with my tape recorder years ago, I think the lack of treble on one track is probably azimuth adjustment of the head. My memory is that it was a fiddly adjustment but I'm sure you'll sort it out. Looking forward to the final video! Cheers

  Yes! I'm still finding belt residue in some places. It's incredible how it gets everywhere. And indeed, it's probably a head alignment issue. Both height and azimuth, I guess. I'll have to align it by ear because I don't have alignment tapes. Thanks for the compliments! My capacitors arrived yesterday, so I should be able to continue the work next weekend.

  If you were looking for a R2R with simple mechanical construction, I think you got the wrong one 😅 For the next R2R I would suggest one from Tandberg, they are much simpler mechanically, but strong and well buildt. Go for the late 60s, early 70s models, if you can find one that actually needs fixing. There's many of them out there, but they just seemes to work forever. Impressive job so far anyway, dont give up, now starts the fun part where you discover that the heads are not working 😂

  Yeah, it was a typical case of a spring which suddenly pops loose and hits you in the finger. Hurt quite a bit but only for a very short time. After a minute or so it was already gone.

  You can get an assorted kit of C-Clips. Man, it has a crap-load of Electrolytic's that need replacing!

  Vous parlez Francais ? si pas pas grave lol I see you had a lot of problems with your Tuner , i dont want to have the same ,mine was front a house , a paper with " Servez vous" , it need just an ac plug (wire Cut ) but i seed , the tuner not work (wire for displacement surely) it's not a problem i hope that's all ... i dont believe ,for exemple 50 yr old Capacitors is dead , why ? i have a 1978 ITT Hifi ALL stock ALL light belt capacitors and diamond for lp "SHURE" ) I'm happy to find your channel , im electrician at work but i love electronic from my childhood , i have a lot of good "old" engine and love to create amplifiers ^^ i'm not fear for (maybe ? ) repare that tuner but if it just need ac plug and wire for tuner that's fantastic :) i want to check today but i dont have the time ... wait and see for tomorrow .   Yes, I speak french, but I prefer to communicate in English online. :-) I hope you have more luck with your radio than I had with mine. I gave up on trying to repair it, it just kept oscillating. I still have it though, so maybe I'll give it another go some time later.

  @@retro_tech First check : Light Dead (not a problem) , a lot of dust , like i sayed : wire for tuner to change , and ........fuse changed for a thick wire !!!!!! i hope that not caused big damage ...

  2:30 i'm pretty sure My version is before 1971/1972 no vacum tube inside luckely (because for componments i need to go brussels , nothing here in Mons that's sad..) Yeah dust exactly like mine 8:54 , DIN plug is very nice i prefere DIN to CINCH :) 25:38 , for light (i dont know if it ok) if not , maybe i change for led (why not after all ? it's just light ^^ )

  Found one today at Mons (Belgium) , tomorrow i have to fix it , it's complete and clean ,need ac plug and wire for tuner , happy to have an old telefunken , beatuful vintage ampli/radio , in the futur maybe putin a bluetooth (very easy to make ^^ )

  Hi Kristof. This is quite a nice little retro piece. I wonder of the wow might be caused by the cassette itself. Is it the same on different cassettes? The spools can jam if they're wound too tight. I always used to give them a bit of a twist before putting them in, or run them through on fast forward & rewind. Cheers

  From the frequency of the wow&flutter i would suspect the pinchroller too. I usually take out the flywheel when i have it open like you had, to lubricate the axel. The motors also probably could do with an overhaul. Open, clean and relubrication.

  Leuke video over deze kleine amplifier. Heb een paar jaar geleden een Philips FA890 in mint condition voor een heel zacht prijsje kunnen kopen, die gebruik ik gewoon als mijn hoofd amplifier en speelt als een nieuwe en het geluid in verbinding met mijn Philips FB821 is voor mij gewoon super. Zelfs de groene lampjes rond de volume knop werken nog 😂😂😂

  Hahaha, leuk om dit soort apparaten weer terug te zien. In mijn jeugd was in bijna ieder huishouden wel zo een ding te vinden. Philips, Fischer, Itt en nog wat andere merken. Wat raar bij deze is dat de radio er niet in zit, had je meestal wel. Leuke video, dank je wel. Puntje drin puntje druit 😂😂😂😂

  You should set the speed to 33.3 and not to 33.0. Exact speed for an album is 33 and a third RPM. This will also improve values for other speeds.

  A friend of mine had that record player back in the 70s. Not the entire combination, but the stand alone thing. I was always impressed by the sound quality. It looks quite simple and cheap, but whatever components they used inside the plain plastic housing sure did the trick very well. Back then I had a very basic BSR record player, and his Philips easily outperformed it.

  Just one thing: The speed should be 33,3rpm - not 33. Once you adjust it to that, the other two speeds will be spot on too.

  You are absolutely right on the speed. Slight mistake from my side. Not the first time that Philips gear surprised me in quality. They truly knew where to cut costs and where not.

  It's crazy that Phillips used 2N3055 transistors in this unit. Maybe they were on special offer at the time! I'm used to finding them in power amps of old disco stuff. Strange how some rubber parts convert back to "crude oil" as they degrade whilst others stay as new. I was enjoying the first record... You could have played a bit more of it!

  Don't forget that Philips used to manufacture these 2N3055 transistors themselves. So I guess they had a cheap supply available.

  They usually didn't print their brandname on them. Just the transistor type and a date code. Check the first couple of minutes of part 2 of my video series on the restoration of the Siera 5521 / Philips 22RH521 amplifier. There I show some genuine NOS Philips BD182 transistors which I picked up. They have a production date of 1977 but nowhere show the Philips logo.

  Ja, ik heb een aantal Johnny Hoes platen. Ik bewaar dat soort platen omdat ze grappig zijn om te gebruiken in mijn filmpjes en omdat ze geen copyright claims opleveren hier op KZread.

  Hi Kristof Well, it has turned out to be a stylish and apparently quite collectable little radio. That oscillation is a bit of a mystery but I'm sure you will work it out. I wonder if your shorting tuning capacitor is in fact bad earthing of the rotor vanes. maybe attach a clip lead to the rotor to chassis & see if it changes? Anyway, another great job! Now you have a hundred or so other radios to fix! I wonder how much freight would be to Australia... Cheers

  Oscillation can come from positive feedback (or lack of negative feedback) in the amplifier. So check the 1K resistor and the 1uF capacitor between the speaker and volume control. It could probably also be something wrong with the output tube, so it starts oscillating when it gets hot enough.

  Thanks for the suggestions. I'm also suspecting the output tube. I'll post an update as soon as I acquired a replacement tube.
