Northampton Museums and Art Gallery

Digital content, including films and audio clips, about the collections, events and exhibitions at Northampton Museums and Art Gallery. The newly expanded museum in Northampton town centre opened in 2022, providing engaging experiences for visitors of all ages. The galleries showcase our collections including history, shoes and art. Our shoe galleries feature our Arts Council England Designated collection. Temporary exhibitions will ensure that there is always something new to see. The museum also has a cafe, shop and selling gallery. Our other museum, in the heart of Abington Park, was once the manor house for the extensive Abington estate, with galleries charting the history and development of Abington as it has grown from a medieval manor to an attractive leafy suburb of Northampton. Abington Park Museum is designed to allow people of all ages explore and discover the people who have made Abington their home, and their experiences past and present.

When I was last in Northampton, met a great chap walking his Doberman. He let me feed it a whole can of tuna that I had from getting groceries. Thought he was lovely until he grabbed my tits and had his dog bark at me, reported it to the police but they did nothing! Sick place. I'll never return!

I left Northampton in 1990 age 24. The place now is nothing close to how I remember most of it. The blueprint is the same-ish but one way systems pedestrianised roads , and the council have allowed so much history to be bulldozed down. The 1970s were great times and the town was buzzing ....1980s not so much so...and now ... well go visit .

I was born just a few years too late to enjoy it at the time, but really enjoyed the few reels I managed to see today. Thank you so much for documenting such a a vibrant time in Northampton's history..... and thank you for sharing!

It would be great if Northampton had that civic buzz about it in 2023.

Having recently spent a week in Northampton, the town centre is so different than it was then. The Guildhall has more than a list of mayors at its entrance. No mention of the shoe museum or any shoe manufacturing which much have been booming when this film was made. And the only sports are dog and horse racing? What about the county cricket, rugby and football clubs

I used to work for Coles shoe repairers that had shops all over town , and wellingborough / Towcester too. The family were proud of their history in the town, and I was lucky to work with some of the elders that had worked in the shoe industry all of their lives. The old Peacock way was my favourite shop , but the kings heath shop was a lot of fun. Happy days. Unforgettable.

We used to go to cricket every w/end and park inside the ground. You could park on the football pitch, have a pork-pie & thermos inr your own deck-chair then sleep on the grass until the game picked up

Interesting that the M1 was built with no safety barriers

I grew up close by the cross which had lost its top most cross by the time I first knew ir. I have a copy of the print purchased many ears ago in a jumble sale. Reminds me of my youth when I often sat on the steps of the cross. I will ask about it at the museum.

I’ve heard that people used to hide bodies of cats under floors or in walls for luck but I always thought that the cats had just crawled in there to die. I don’t think that explanation works in this case.

This is a picture I painted when I was a student at Homerton College Cambridge. I would love to know ( I think!!) what was said about it in the talk. Really surprised to see it after all these years!
