I was going to move to the Isle of Wight if the US election had turned out differently. Such a lovely place to set a murder.
Hi I am trying to write a story where crime plays a heavy part in moving my plot. The main conflict comes from all these crime families and the goings on between them and to kick start the main plot I am having a murder take place between two of the smaller families and the main character is very much a green horn, he loses evidence that will give him the authority to start questioning the people involved. And I am a very inexperienced writer and am unsure of how to go about solving the crime. I should say the book is going to be very character based and the crime side of it is more.of a way to get into the main characters head. I was just seeing if I could get some advice on how you structure your crimes.
Don't worry too much about solving the crime at this stage. Usually I have no idea who did it, why and how during the first draft not until I am about half way through writing it, about 40k words, by then many of the characters have started to come to life and that spurs ideas and helps me to develop motivation and hence the plot. I'm not sure how far you have got but my advice would be to just write and write.. the first draft is rubbish anyway. Once you have got something written you can then begin to shape it, ditch parts of the novel (and characters) that have no relevance (but I always copy and paste into another Word document in case I can use it elsewhere) and add in the clues. Fine tune all the characters. If you get stuck (or are stuck) then knowing more about your characters, their background, life experiences, personalities, motivations will help you out of it and drive the novel on. I hope that helps. Good luck
@Pauline Rowson thank you for the advice it really helps, I was so worried about it, haha thank you!
