It’s hard to start over, especially in an unforgiving place like New York. I’ve had to start over a lot moving around often as a kid/adult. As many people as I met and interacted with every day, I only ever had a few connections to really get me through the times. I personally think there’s a beauty to it- as lonely as you may feel, there’s thousands of others in the same situation as you and even though you may not be connected on a personal level, all of you help hold together something that’s bigger than yourself. I guess I’ve been lucky that the right people seem to make their way into my life whenever I’ve had to start over, so even in my worst moments I’ve never truly felt alone. Regardless of that I don’t seek out things with great expectations or promises. I think that’s a mistake a lot of people make. I know I have. I’d like to move to New York one day, maybe even settle there. I’m definitely not going in with expectations or grand ideas of a good peaceful life, but hopefully as much as I’ll have to survive, I can also have those moments of fulfillment. I’m not a big fan of complete peace tbh. But If I can make it there, I can make it anywhere.

As other favourite games lose their lustre as I get older, Skate stands up as one that is still able to give me that butterfly feeling or fizz if you will. I think it is because they are impossible to overthink. As an adult I can get so OCD when I play and feel the need to do every side quest. Which takes away from just enjoying the ride a game tried to offer. This whole game is just a ride, so you can start it up and it doesn’t feel like a chore. You get bored, you do a mission, then you feel like roaming and ripping again. That combined with it being so immersive and making me (someone who can’t even skate btw) feel like I can rip makes it awesome. Safe to say, If they murder my boy. I will be devastated.

Brilliant video, and the points you make are 100% accurate. I was around the age you are now in 2005, so LEGO games didn't exist in my childhood, but I played and loved the original LEGO Star Wars with my girlfriend back in the day. Fast Forward nearly 20 years, and we have 4 kids, including an 8 year old boy and Skywalker Saga is his favourite LEGO game.

IV and TLaD really makes you feel lonely, sad, uneasy with it's color filter of Liberty City, and then TBoGT gives it the color it needs..... also, don't live in New York, there's this guy wearing red spandex just swinging, and there's a dude with 4 robot arms, rats the size of cats, and a lion in Grand Central Station

For some reason, GTA IV resonated me on a level I cannot explain. I'm unsure if it is the fact that it was my first GTA game I played, or maybe the somewhat relatable isolation of the protagonist. Maybe even the somewhat "romaniticized" view of the city. Like the coldness, grayness and the bright lights of time square. It's really confusing really. I'd say the feeling is something that is drenched with nostalgia, but the other "ingredients" for it are unknown for me. I honestly believe, that this will be my favorite GTA game of all time, it's really a shame that I wasn't able to experience 2000s gaming more.

For me it's more so how everything tries to destroy/bankcrupt you in that city. Just any comfortable way of living there comes with immense costs that elsewhere would be halved. So you constantly have that overhead of spending which causes stress and frustration. Sometimes you need that quality food or baverage right where you are and then it's instantly $50 just like that. And it piles up the entire week until you're gobsmagged by how little luxuries you enjoyed for the money spent. The Simpsons episode about New York is not too far from the truth. Depending what cards you are being dealt it can be the greatest or worst experience. Ultimately, I have very mixed emotions about this city. I just couldn't imagine living there long term, all the grime and business really wears on your mental. I have seen the freshly moved to NYC and the been there for years pics of people before and they usually didn't age well there. It feels a constant survival of the strongest, not peaceful at all.

So in universe do the characters acknowledge that Liberty City is quite literally a tighter smaller version of New York? I mean we know New York City exists in the 3d universe at the very least. So what do characters think about the fact that Liberty City is literally just New York City but smaller. It literally has it’s own version of the Statue of Liberty

Cattlelike normgroids call not having a social outing for a day 'loneliness.' And this is while living in a city, surrounded by hundreds of thousands of people and having generally large social circles, including active social media use &c.. Try being an outcast Truthcel for a moment, pal, then you'll know what real loneliness is like.

I got a decade old synchronicity jolt when Color of Autumn hit. I was playing IV with the Nujabes discography in the Independence Radio folder back in the day and was always bumping it in LC. I specifically remember listening to a lot of Spiritual State because it had come out recently. Those instrumental jazzy tracks have hardcoded themselves into the GTA IV directory of my brain, alongside 20fps averages and countless reinstalls from messing with mods. Thanks for excavating all that 4 me. <3
