Fool's Gold was what kicked off the whole Madchester scene, as dance music by Indie rock bands. There's nothing of an afterthought or an extra track about it. It was Fool's Gold that first hooked most people into the band and the sound. You heard that and you had to dance, and you also knew you had to get to Manchester and get into The Hacienda club, and wear the baggy clothes and dive into all the other bands in the scene too.

Ecstasy & Wine is super interesting, as it only offers subtle clues as to where the bands sound is headed. Its a very simple, pleasant jangle pop sound. Of the 4 EPs the sound kind of matches the album they ran adjacent to. The self titled is more like loveless, but rawer and with some new elements like ambient and even drum & bass!! Still loving your work Alex 😊

The Replacements just know how to do an intro. They offer up, bam, just out of the blue, some of the best song intros ever as relative neophytes. It's kinda uncanny. The intro to Unsatisfied is effing genius. And they were young idiots at the time.

Thanks for another on-point reaction. I adore this album. It was their first full length album, and in 1985, it was in the cassette deck of my car for an entire year. I listened only to this while driving to school and work. Is it possible for an entire album to be both whimsical and sombre at the same time? This was my introduction to their style, approach, and substance. It only gets better from here.

  • @richardmose

Thanks for your reaction. REM is an incredible band that continued to evolve and change their sound as all great bands do. It's more about evolving and adapting their sound, than making the same album over and over.

In terms of ranking, mine goes just like yours: Heaven or Las Vegas = Treasure > BBK. What strikes me as quite interesting is that this album simultaneously does and does not have a strong staying power. Although I can barely memorize the names of the songs, and the strucure of them all is very straightforward and kinda predictable, I always find myself going back to it. It's the PERFECT background music, in the best way possible. It sounds pretty, it has great melodies, super catchy short few-word choruses... I don't know, it's like comfort music, and it keeps getting better the more you listen to it.

It's refreshing to witness your reaction to this. Surfer Rosa is so revered, and while I do agree it's a good album and is very important/significant..... it's my least favorite of the original albums. (I even like some of the post reunion albums more as well. I know, HERESY right?) I feel like there's a lot of filler on this album. Doolittle is a gigantic step up, and Bossanova/Trompe just continue that trajectory. I'd actually love to see your reaction to the post reunion albums as well.
