Somerset & Dorset Railway Trust
Somerset & Dorset Railway Trust
The Trust started as the S&D Railway Circle in 1966 - before the S&D line closed - with the intention of collecting artefacts and information about the S&D. Originally based at Radstock on the S&D, but unable to obtain a long-term lease, the Trust moved to Washford in 1976.
The pride of our collection is 7F freight locomotive No. 53808, originally built for the S&D in 1925 as S&D No. 88. Our smaller locomotive, named Kilmersdon and built in 1929 by Peckett’s of Bristol, was the last steam locomotive to work the Somerset coalfield. There are three S&D coaches in our collection; Coach 4, a First Class carriage built by the S&D at Highbridge in 1886 has been fully restored and there are two other Third Class coaches awaiting restoration.
We have extensive museum exhibits and our members receive an informative quarterly magazine, Pines Express. Find out more at www.sdrt.org.

Excellent video, liked and subbed. Cheers Ghosty
The SDJR period layout was a joy to see with some very interesting stock.
Very sad to hear the news about Nigel. Back in 2000 my wife and I visited Washford and had a good 'S & D' conversation with Nigel and Peter Cattermole; as we turned to leave, Peter had a quick word with Nigel and then called us back and asked if we would like a footplate ride on Kilmersdon as Nigel had to shunt the yard. Of course we said 'Yes' and what an amazing experience that was; at Peter's request, we wrote about it and it was printed in the Pines. A wonderful memory for us and grateful thanks to Nigel. Our thoughts today are with his family and friends. R.I.P. Nigel. Bob Hylands.
It looks a bit like Percy
Percy is based on an Avonside, another Bristol loco builder.
@@jonathangriffin1120 I already know that
Oh the joy of hardworking steam on the climb to Masbury! Well, part of it. And from an authentic loco even though she probably spent much time pottering around Radstock, Haydon Hill and Norton Hill!
Nice video :)
Probably be about a decade before we see the likes of her again 😢
Hopefully not, as plans are already being considered to get work going early next year.
Midsomer Norton is good.
Well, I did not meet Mr Barnaby ...
I've booked s ticket for New Years Day. Never been to Midsomer Norton before.
I remember her at Radstock when the SDJR Trust was based there with 53808. She gave brake van rides on part of the S&D up to the level crossing.
Lovely sound of her pulling up the bank and nice to see the S & D headcode.
The 7F is so beautiful, loved cleaning it in the mornings for the gala! Its such a shame that it won't be running for much longer 😢 apparently it's getting very tired, poor thing was worked so hard whilst on the main lines 😞
Thank you Hannah - let's hope the overhaul can be done in reasonable time.
Nice - thanks for sharing!
Some interesting wagons in that freight train, and a change to see the 7F with a non-S&D headcode. Very nice though to see her in action.
Lovely to see Kilmersdon back in steam I hope some day to see her visiting West Somerset Railway again at some stage. even if its only for a gala as this was my favourite loco I use to see operating in Washford Yard.
Such a lovely area and the Ivatt looks so well on the line. Many thanks.
Fantastic scenery😉👍️✨Beautiful locomotive and train😃⤴️⤴️Thank you for sharing the excellent video :)
I salute the honesty of this layout: the hours no doubt spent on its planning and construction coupled with the ~ maybe it was just the camera angle ~ switch gear just behind a wall for ease of access. Great stuff!
Thank you for the kind comment!
hi there, this loco looks fab, runs well and a great paint job, well done,
little thrash wagon there
She looks great! Will she be back in that SDJR livery?
No, the SDJR livery matched Coach 4 such that they looked very good together; however, for Kilmersdon, that livery is inaccurate. Kilmersdon was the last steam locomotive to work the Somerset coalfield, but was not an S&D engine.
@@sdrt Makes sense, thanks for the response
Wow! She looks and sounds terrific. 20 or so years ago, my wife and I had the privilege of a footplate ride on Kilmersdon while she was shunting Washford yard. I was impressed how gutsy she was for her size. Great to see her back.
Good layout - just a pity that you don’t have the space to curve the line off to the right to Templecombe upper for authenticty
I had a great day on this service and managed to get a little footage too! The stewards and organisers all did a brilliant job. Look forward to riding behind 53808 and catching her in video again during 2022!
live in west moors the old S&D line used to beside my house remember the pines exspress thundering by so love this layout
wish I could have seen this!
Nice video 👍
Delightful to watch. '08 looks and sounds gorgeous and seems at home on the Watercress Line! The S & D emblem above the left buffer was a nice touch and great to hear 4Fs referred to as Armstrongs!
🤘🤘🏴
woohhoo~awesome recording. all the best,bro- 👏
Who volunteered to "ride" in the coffin?
Well, there's a question! Presumably, it was empty......
Apart from the unavoidable reverse alignment going up to the SR station, this was delightful. Loved the tablet exchange apparatus!
Amazing ! This deserves more views. If everyone who watches this video leaves a comment, it'll help the KZread algorithm share the video to more people !
Hi Tim, That was great many thanks for doing this. having tried doing some video's myself on Sturminster I can appreciate how many tries and the amount of editing required to pull this together. The signals were great and the falling arm on the Whittaker superb, was that from a kit or a scratchbuild ? Video is a cruel medium, for me the missing crew were a standout, is that on your to do list or now you have the bug for building layouts are you going to do another one ? Thanks Gavin..
Tim writes, "Hello Gavin, Thanks for your response to the video. You’re right! There is so much to set up that isn’t obvious until you look at the first takes. I want to do more when I get some time but it may be a while. Hoping to get better depth of field, colour balance and maybe more sound, as examples. And I’ll find a crew for the 0-4-4! Pleased with the signals that I’ve now coordinated with route setting. The three Whitakers were scratch built and probably unique. I have been very fortunate to have Richard and Steve in our Northern Area Group whose modelling skills are way ahead of mine! Extremely unlikely to do another layout. There is still much to do on TL (that the videos of course omit to show) and the years are passing! Thanks for your interest. Hope Sturminster is working well. Cheers. Tim."
@@sdrt , Hi Tim, Sturminster is still going well although I'm starting to think about a bit of a rebuild to redo a few sections of track that are not as reliable as they need to be and the station buildings are starting to look there age. I'll hopefully get some use out of it for the next year or so as I'm now living in Shaftesbury. I've started volunteering at Shillingstone and I think I'll do a model of that so I have something to show whilst Stur gets a rest. Best wishes gavin..
@@gavincollins5997 I'd absolutely love to see what you make of Shillingstone if and when it happens, especially as my parents live in CO. Although I'm not sure that all your efforts shouldn't be applied to the full size version with its exciting extension plans now that they've got the nod from the powers that be, if you had a choice.
Most enjoyable to watch! Top marks for working signals and Whitaker arm.
Our 7F looks really at home on the Watercress Line. The scene from from 1.30 is very reminiscent of the old S & D.
Where is she now this 2021?
At Ropley on the Watercress Line undergoing overhaul, which is proceding well. Hopefully back in service by next spring
Nice one
fantastic video
Thank you James
Appears I am the 1st viewer! Great video, lovely to see our 7F in action again and sounding full of gusto!
Thank you for your kind comment; it was certainly an enjoyable afternoon!
Enjoyable. I'm currently trying to master (and failing) the session "Helston Freight Run" from the Trainz 2019 DLC "Cornish Mainline & Branches." I recognize the film's Trevarno Station as the one seen in the game, in its theoretical 1930s condition. The general countryside is a good match too. The starting station, I suspect, postdates the 1930s. Leastwise I can't (yet?) place it within the game.
