Thank you so much, Alain. I knew nothing about pastel papers and now after this short video I have a good understanding of what I need. I'm so grateful for this knowledge. I was about to use watercolor paper I have on hand but now i know better. I'm new at pastels being an oil painter all my life. I'm tired of waiting for paint to dry and love the intense colors of pastels. I'm so excited, now I need some nice coated sanded mounted paper to work on!! Thanks again, Love, Joan Williamson

Absolutely wonderful! I found myself prompting you to do this or that, ha ha! I thoroughly enjoyed every second of that. I'm starting a new painting in pastels tomorrow! I'll be back! Thank you so much, Joan Williamson

i can't wait for tomorrow so I can try this. I bought a small set of pastels. I'm an oil painter but I'm so tired of waiting days for things to dry so I can proceed. I love the incredibly bright colors of pastels too. There's so much to learn and I'm so grateful for your free videos to help people learn by watching, the best way. Off to part two! I'm like a kid in a candy store!! Thank you so much, Alain. Love, Joan Williamson

Hello Alain, could you recommend pastels that I can use with my water color paintings? I want it for highlighting, for example; highlighting leaves and flowers, feathers on birds...

Oh, gosh! Exactly what I needed to hear at the end, because I have a painting I want to send to a friend that needs to be mounted first. I watched this a couple years ago and very excited to watch it again. I didn't remember the part about mounting a finished painting. Hooray!

Great effort to reach people by NOT SHOWING them mainly a TRACING, of a Wild animal and how to paint the Fur. I seen it too many times Trace and transfer then how to Paint the copy. ART Galleries object to displaying Realism. Saying it is just a good copy work, or nothing more than Illustration work, Even though a lot of abstract goes into creating, and some still shows when done. as in Robert Bateman's work. 60's all color theory , light dart went out the door . In Russia and some other Countries students Learn at a very early age the anatomy , the architectural Design of buildings, While in USA our students are still finger and blow painting, splatter, or drip paintings on to a somewhat portrait . I seen some pod casts and one was in water, which looked Dead, as if been found in area of slugged. One was in black and looked also DEAD, as with all these Slice marks with the brush, as if the person would have used a Knife and slice if they had one. Sort of like the woman who just recently Stabbed the 3 year old boy in the FACE AND BODY. Others take a brush to Drip, Splatter. and then slap on a few flat colors on the face. As if they really did not like the person or of themselves, the inner feeling is not one of really respect, but to destroy . THIS is how I see much of today abstract.. THINK in NY one lady is seen going around pointing out the beauty of Realism, but noticed through out , it was not at all REALISM , but someone interrupted idea . While you can see the realism around the gallery, but she never chose one of them. They treat as if GODS Creation, other than human, wildlife , the flowers , trees. butterflies. I use to ask people what was their favorite bird., and they say " OH, after a bit of thought , I LOVE ALL BIRDS." and I know they do not ,when they complain about the bird poop, or being awakened by the 4 am Robin singing. or the same sound of a wren, not realizing it is the call to get their young out of the NEST

This is exactly what I needed. I have so much trouble trying to "let go" and get loose with my painting, and your descriptions of 'broken edges', 'push and pull' and letting the apple spill over makes so much sense! I can't wait to try this - thank you for being so generous with your knowledge and talent. ❤

Thanks for showing us this. But some people like to have a small overlap to the paper, which gives a 1/4 inch or so boarder around the painting. It makes it easier to handle, plus will get covered up when framing with spacers or a matte anyway.

Hi Alain, I love your demos and recommendations! Have you found another brand to replace the nupastels? I'm running out of "Cordovan" (I use alot) and I can't find nupastel open stock available anywhere anymore, it seems to be discontinued. :(

I get around this by making my own pumice board using a heavyweight archival illustration board (I learned this from Ellen Eagle). However I love having options, especially since I’m itching to try UArt Dark paper! Thank you talking this through!

H E L P - That was wonderful BUT since I'm totally new to pastels, it doesn't answer my question. What is the best to use for my needs, and most archival of all the papers to do serious pastel portraits on to sell to my art customers? And what spray fixative can I use that won't change the color values and shadings in any way that might change a portrait?

I may have the last surviving roll of Wallis!! However, it's the professional grade and not the museum grade, like my previous roll. It's so tightly curled that it's barely usable and would be a nightmare to frame. Good to know that there's a similar paper!!

Yay. I’m going on a cruise to Alaska. I can’t afford to buy all those things at once, but it gives me very good ideas of things to bring. I’m talking about airplane travel an d a ship. We shall see. I’m also starting to use Pan Pastels, perhaps they can be included. Let’s see, Pan Pastels, soft, hard and Pencils. Yikes. Gotta do some serious planning. Maybe just use my phone eh?

So fun, Alain. Your "minimal stroke" technique works so well for rendering an animal without requiring the detail of the fur. I wasn't sure it would work and am pleased to see it works quite well. I have painted portraits of two of my cats with pastel. One was done with pastel pencils and a tight focus on the directions of the fur, and the other a long haired cat, with broader strokes in soft pastel. You show me that the same approach can cover both options. I particularly love the back lighting of your reference which accentuates the transparency and lovely color in a cat's ear.
