    As a new owner of a GS SBGN003 and custodian of a BlackBay 58 for the past two years, I would say it’s great to have both in the collection The Grand Seiko is a very sharp tool, a tad cold but with impeccable finishing, a best in class in-house movement and the boutique experience is truly high end, even for an entry level model. Very Japanese. On the other end, Tudor ADs clearly don’t need you (you put down some money and wait for « the call »), the purchase experience is way more casual and you end up with a warm, good looking and well made watch which looks like a familiar face. Very European

    a scuba diver wearing a rolex or a tudor in 2022 is gonna get laughed at for several reasons and none of them have anything to do with the aesthetics of the watch. Considering the potential risk of death one takes during a dive one could argue wearing antiquated technology like this in some situations is irresponsible, dangerous, unpractical and just stupid. The 60s is over man. The perfect dive watch has been a depth computer for a long time now but i agree with you...the skx is probably the better choice.

    For some extra information. The Swiss (CEH) made the first quartz movement and therefore the first quartz wristwatch with the beta 1 caliber in 1967. However, it wasn't available for the public yet. The Seiko Astron was the first commercial quartz wristwatch released in 1969 and then in 1970 the first Swiss quartz wristwatch with the beta 21 caliber. Many people believe that Seiko with the Astron caused the quartz crisis. This is false. The quartz crisis was due to the mass-production of the quartz movement which made it increasingly popular over the cheaper Swiss mechanical and automatic watches. In, that regard, the Astron really didn't trigger anything since it was a luxury item. People tend to forget that Quartz watches were luxury products in the beginning and that mass-production with cheaper costs is what drove mechanical watches to the high end market mostly therefore the quartz crisis. It was the smaller Swiss watch manufacturers who suffered the most and became obsolete.

  • @Roughdraft214
    @Roughdraft214 Жыл бұрын

    The Swiss created the quartz crisis. Seiko released the Astron and made the claim that quartz would be the future, but the Swiss did not adapt to the technology, and the the world start buying quartz and the Swiss with its mechanical movements started to die out. If it weren’t for Swatch and some of the other bigger names buying out all the smaller brands, most wouldn’t have made it. Luckily mechical watches have improved and a push to sell them as luxury goods has revised the Swiss market, and the automatic watch market in general for that. I just think the Swiss didn’t adapt, Seiko only made a watch.

    For me great horology is also (of course) telling the time in a extremely precise way. GS does that and their SBGX343 looks absolutely stunning. Regarding your video I really think Rolex doesn’t limit the supply. It’s just that the demand/production ratio of certain models vs the production numbers is really off. Let’s say 90% of the demand is on steel sport models and it maybe represents 20% of Rolex production. It’s more « limited production » instead of limited supply. But there are real problems in their supply chain and retail systems. Regarding service you really don’t have to service it every 3 years. That’s just not correct ;)

    @Kalmar917 1. “It isn’t massed produced like a Sieko” - Tudor is mass-produced as is Rolex. Rolex are extremely common (Rolex make about 1,000,000 watches a year - they are not as “special” as most sheep think they are) and both Tudor and Rolex are perhaps the most over-rated brands in the history of watchmaking. 2. “BB58 is perfection if you consider diving into your points” - it is a modern watch pretending to be a vintage watch so it is a little like putting a body kit on a family car and calling it a Ferrari. Faux rivets are plain lame and a plain case back with a poorly decorated movement suggested a much lower price point. 3. “Didn’t have issues with the bezel while scuba diving” - you don’t have issues until you have issues, crown guards mitigate the likelihood of the issues you refer to hence not perfect. Some would say a cheaper aluminium bezel which scratches easily thereby defacing the scene is a disadvantage also. 4. “Also, the movement is in house and has a 70 reserve” - somebody who thinks “in- house” is necessarily superior knows nothing about watches. Both Rolex and Tudor were not an in-house manufacturer until relatively recently, Rolex started off just sticking movements they didn’t make into cases they didn’t make. What do you think the Seiko movement is? It is in-house, they are completely vertically integrated. 5. “Also Sieko’s can’t handle a 50 cal without stopping a few seconds while the 58 keeps ticking” - how have you tested this? Under what conditions and with which watches? Weren’t Seikos used by soldiers historically in armed conflict? I don’t hate Tudor nor Rolex, I owned a Sea Dweller for years and really like the Pelagos but let’s get real here - neither brands deserve the hero worship they get. There are better watches out there there really are. A hyped badge on the face bolstered by marketing does not make it better. Check out the “Emperor’s New Clothes”.

    I’ve done tones of research, tried numerous dive watches, even bought a Tudor Pélagos LHD.....but still, I was dying for Rolex ! Initially a Submariner, but then after trying the one with the maxi case, turned into a simple OP in 36 as I have a small wrist and hate those big ass watches that weight a ton , and look gross. 2 weeks ago, I finally stumbled upon some new OP 36 in the sought after blue colour....and after seeing it and trying it ......what a huge disappointment ! I kid you not...the watch wasn’t what I expected, the finish when you look at the dial in details, the size, etc etc. I turned around, and they had the BB58 in blue with the blue faux leather suede bracelet. What a beautiful watch, perfect size, thickness, finish, colour and the price is half the submariner...the sub should be prized barely 15%-20% max over the BB58. It is no where double the watch for sure. Precision? Being blessed, dépends how you wear it, or leave it overnight, it could go between +/- 1S over two days I kid you not.

    I hope this is a joke. Been scuba diving and snorkeling with the BB58 and now I can say white water rapids as well and it is a little tank. I wear for everything except boxing and basketball. You cannot compare it to a Sieko. Also, I once owned a Rolex Explorer but it couldn’t take the grind. Also, the Sieko does not take the recoil of a 50 cal like a Tudor.
