Like so many others, I remember counting down the days to UFC229 on that fateful October night in 2018. Had been watching the UFC for well over a decade at that point and was so invested in this fight. I liked Khabib, but more so that I just wanted Conor to get humiliated and humbled in the worst way. Always respected Conor's fighting abilities but, as a human being, I was just hoping Khabib would put him in his place. I remember going back and forth with friends on who I thought would win, as they were all placing bets, and weren't avid UFC fans, so they wanted my opinion. You gotta remember that this was still "Conor", and he had surprised me on so many occasions that I really stopped doubting he could do the unthinkable. With that said.....as soon as Khabib walked out to this song, and I saw his composure, I turned to my friends and said, "bet the house on Khabib". They asked, "why are you so confident now when you weren't 10 minutes ago?".... and I went on to explain the whole history on how Conor had made his whole career on playing "mental warfare" with his opponents leading up to their fight, and the ONLY time it hadn't worked was against Diaz, and now seeing Khabib walking down the aisle as cold as ice, it was so obvious. You can tell that Khabib didn't have a single doubt in his mind that he was going to win this fight. He knew he was going to stick to his gameplan, not let his emotions get the best of him and get in to a "kickboxing" match with Conor. Since this night, Khabib has grown on me. Not my favorite all time fighter, but to be able to be as dominant and stoic in that octagon, I honestly don't know how many fighters in the whole world would be able to replicate what he did that night. Imagine his mental fortitude, knowing that the whole world was watching, the prideful background he was raised on, and knowning if he somehow lost this fight, his entire legacy would be smeared. In the end, we saw the emotions get the best of Khabib, but at least it was after the fight, and not condoning it, but I can't blame the man. This will always be my favorite MMA fight, and I don't know if anything will ever top it. Sure, there have been more legendary back-and-forth fights, Lawler v MacDonald 2, McGregor v Diaz 2, Griffin v Bonner 1, but the stakes will never ever be this high in the UFC again. Each man knew that whoever won would be forever immortalized and the loser would have to wear that on their resume like a visible scar for the rest of their fighting careers. Also, you can see what this fight did for the trajectory for each fighter. Khabib went on to defend the title twice more and then retire undefeated and one of the all time greats. Conor has not been the same, and although I want to see him fight again, his fans are delusional if they think he will ever beat another top 5 lightweight again, let alone compete for a title. I added Khabib's walkout song to my Spotify workout playlist, and although I don't understand a single word in the lyrics, it continues to give me chills and the motivation to push through a workout. I will always remember where I was on the evening of October 6th, 2018.
