I owe my life (literally my life) to this guy. I found Dr. Schmitz by pure accident. Total fluke. I exchanged a couple of KZread comments with a random girl from California, when I was at my wits end living paralyzed on the floor for a year...and she heard of Dr. Schmitz, and that he was pretty good...but that is all she knew. I was in Germany at that time, with my wife, looking for a doctor to fix me (my surgery was very risky, because my nerve roots had foreign substance grown into them, so cutting around the nerve roots was NOT a thing that most US surgeons wanted to do, given the risk of permanent - irreversible paralysis of the right leg). Just like this guy Mike, all that I was offered in the US, were badly outdated, ball-and-socket, artificial discs, which present a lot of instability and wear out the fact joints in the back of the spine. Fusion was the other option. At 35 years old, I refused fusion. I wanted to remain active and avoid subsequent destruction of adjacent discs, which fusion inevitably causes over time). With a little bit of research I found the ESP implant. I have read some NBCI studies since about long term outcomes. I liked the design from the engineering perspective (all 6 degrees of freedom - very similar to the human disc returning to center with it's own forces). So I had an implant chosen with a lot of confidence. I just needed a doctor. Once the girl from California mentioned Dr. Schmitz "in the Dusseldorf/Cologne" area, my wife drove us there and I just walked into the clinic. We asked for Dr. Schmitz. I had no clue he was actually the one who owned and ran the entire clinic. He came out of his office and as soon as he heard wife and I speak English, he got excited himself. I remember that there was a line of several German patients in front of us, but I will never forget his "one-liner", that told me a lot about him as a person. He said to the German patients waiting in the lobby: Excuse me everyone - please allow Americans first - they came to see me from across the Ocean". He let us in with excitement. Immediately started joking "How come he is so famous?" ...we explained how we learned about him, and we really needed someone to take the risk with my surgery. He spent an entire hour with us, we set the surgery date, and, now, 5 years later, I am walking, running, riding bicycles, a motorcycle...and able to do anything I want to do within reason. I was able to do it all just 3 months after the surgery, and Dr. Schmitz thought I was crazy doing it all a little early (6 months is recommended), but I am still here in perfect shape, so no regrets. Humble doctor with superb skillset and amazing bedside manner who never stops taking care of patients. To one of the main points in this video, the old philosophy on spine injuries is, that one should wait as long as the pain allows them, and only as the very last resort, basically when you cannot walk or start losing your motor skills in your arms, that you should resort to the surgery. I think, that philosophy is starting to change. FDA, takes a very long time in the USA to approve a medical device and it also takes tens of Millions of dollars. My understanding is, that, there is a deluge of European data on the ESP disc, and its overall success, but FDA will not consider it. They want their own people test the devices in randomized trials. One funny thing about that process is, that looking at an outcome 3 years out of surgery and considering it long-term, is not reasonable in my opinion, in case of an artificial disc, because the facet joints may still be OK and NOT worn out at 3 years out of surgery, but a few more years later, with the obvious mechanical flaw of the design (no internal stabilizing mechanism returning the prosthesis/implant to the neutral position reliving pressure of the facets), the facet joints will ultimately wear out and cause chronic pain at the facet joints, likely inflaming the nerve endings at the facets. Also, with enough extension force under sufficient load on the facets with the ball-and-socket design artificial discs offered in the US, facet joints have been known to break off. At that point, the ball-and-socket disc permanently tilts to one side, causing a permanent tilt at the segment in the spine, and the only way to fit it is a risky revision to fusion. A few years from now, my comment here will be read with a 20-20 hindsight, and it will no longer be funny, that a French artificial disc, implanted by a couple experienced pioneers of the procedure in Germany, becomes a standard in spine care. In the US we tell too many people to wait and suffer in pain. Fortunately the opioid therapy is available to those who cannot function with the level of their pain, but why not fix the spine with the prosthesis that works, as soon as the pain becomes unbearable? Had I known about the ESP disc and Dr. Schmitz 10 months sooner, instead of waiting as I was told, I would not have a permanently damaged nerve root now. I personally know several people with a story similar to mine: Waited too long with a compressed nerve root, and even though they ultimately decompressed it via whatever surgery (fusion, artificial disc, foraminotomy), and now they will suffer the chronic pain from a damaged nerve root for life. Sometimes you need to be your own doctor and your own advocate, because only you feel the level of pain and your own symptoms, and there is no better information you can receive, than your body telling you what to do, and how soon to do it. If you got this far reading my comment... you will thank me later. Now, my wife was recently involved in a bad car crash (she got rear-ended at a high rate of speed by another driver), which resulted in severe damage to the discs in her lumbar and cervical spine. She is currently undergoing pain management, because the pain is severe. Guess where we are going to get her spine fixed? ...and yes, we are doing it really soon. Best of luck to everyone suffering spine issues out there!

Hello, thanks for sharing your spine surgery experience. I didn't catch what exactly procedure you have done, how many levels and how approximatelly it costs. I have a huge problem, had 3 spinal surgeries in past. In 2013 I had fusion for L5/S1 spondilolisthesis and DDD, and in 2021 I had removal of my left side implants and nerve decompression. But during that latest surgery, thay cut my liquour and had to go to another urgent surgery - patching my dural liquour likng. Now surgeons here in my country are in dillema what to do: fusion of my lumbar scoliosis, or fusion of my left sacroiliac joint. Thanks for your answer in advance, and all the best
