Viola da Gamba has a such a different character to the Cello I'm coming to love it. I can't help but stop and listen, especially to CF Abel's music.

Sure that you can hear the difference between viola da gamba and baroque cello in different recordings of the Bach cello suites (I know one played on viola da gamba) or the Bach viola da gamba sonatas (there are many interpretations with baroque cello (including cello piccolo)?

give this recording a try. the works are based on a treatise by hubert le blanc, 1740. the treatise deals with the end of an era - the last gasp of the bass viola da gamba as a solo instrument - in the face of the incursion of the "enterprises of the violin and the pretensions of the cello". in the century prior to this, during louis XIII and XIV's reign, violins were "introduced" to france, largely via the music of jean baptiste lully, and the violin family of instruments quickly took precedent over the older gamba family instruments. the first part of the treatise and the recording compiles the cream of the 17th and 18th century gamba composers. the second section deals with violin composers and pieces, and the third deals with the cello. the violin took the place of gambas as the primary solo instrument, and the cello took the gamba's place both as a continuo as well as a solo instrument. this is a monumentally important collection in terms of its historical and musical value for fans of gamba, early french violin and cello compositions. kzread.info/dash/bejne/eoWAzbB_cpe_lJM.html
