Here are a few corrections: There are whip rules in the US. Lasix (pronounced with an "s" at the end) is not given to all horses. You have to get vet approval. And it is being phased out and in many cases no longer allowed on race day. In most races the fourth place horse wins part of the purse. Horses don't have 360° vision, its more like maybe 340. Its acuity tails off behind them to where they have a blind spot directly to the back. This is one reason why people get kicked when walking behind a horse; the horse barely sees them or doesnt see them at all. Secretariat died of founder, which is a hoof condition but he did not catch it. It was a result from him being overfed. It is absolutely true that they can only breathe through their noses, but horses do have an epiglottitis. Leg fractures are often deadly, but much less so now. The biggest reason is improvements in anesthesia so the horse doesn't thrash, fall and reinjure itself when waking up from surgery. Barbaro's surgeon said he would have most likely recovered if the injury happened today. And finally, look up Belmont Park vet Mark Gerard. He killed a horse named Lebon and ran a much faster look a like horse (named Cinzano) in his place. He bet heavy on "Leban," whose body was found in a landfill. Hope that all proves helpful.

1984 is quite possibly the most terrifyingly book I've read simply due to how Orwell builds so much tension and empathy for his protagonist in the mind and heart of the reader and then....🤯
