  I love it. Schulhoff being Neo Classical, Neo Baroque. Still its his own very appealing language. He's so skilled ,talented, gifted, This is so great. The flute is singing melody after melody like a songbird. Almost has a Concerto Grosso feel. So enjoyable. If only he had lived longer...if only the Nazis didn't start WW 11....If only...

  Are the bow direction markings by Shostakovich?

  No, they aren’t. From the score’s appendix: “In Symphony No. 7, the bow stroke marks in the autograph generally do not match those in the published scores. All changes to the bowings were made by the editor in the proof-sheets of the first edition.“ (Collected Works Vol. 4, State Publishers “Muzyka”, Moscow 1981)

  The wikipedia article says this symphony is scored for 8 horns, 6 trumpets, and 6 trombones. Why use a reduced version for the score? So disappointing...

  One half of the brass is only for the offstage parts.

  @@itznoxy7193 Correction: They are not offstage parts. For example, they play at 15:30. So in the preamble to the score, this is referred to as “an additional group of brass”, but I could not find any reference to it as a “Fernorchester” (playing at distance), as suggested by the German Wikipedia article. In the SWR recording, the additional brass players sit next to the others.

  An astoundingly clear recording and beautifully paced (excitingly quick in some parts of mvt 1). Audience should check their airways before leaving the house, in my opinion, and stay home if you're going to as much as breathe loudly.
