Witham Family Farm

Welcome to the channel!! Enjoy watching some videos of farm life and our story. Between working full time jobs and keeping a farm operation going. Life is a bit crazy but we love it! My Dad is a small cattle and hay operation in eastern Kansas. I(Jake) help him out with the operations and as well as looking to getting the family farm back to row crop operation. I(Jake) am trying to debt free as much possible to get there. We are J.I. Case tractor fans (preferably 70 series) as well and you will see this in the channel.

It looks good I noticed the rake is leaking off if it doesn’t do that on any other tractor you need to change out the plastic termal valves in the hydraulic valves on the 10 its not hard to do

Hi Josh, Like you I ran a MF1560 (Vermeer 605F with red paint) for 4 years without greasing those ! Bought a 605F for parts that turned out to be pretty good shape over all so going through it much like you one step forward two back then start again. Anyway in the disassembly on the 605F frond those grease fittings !! they were covered by an access plate on the MF so we never knew. Cut a circle in that plate like on the 605 and now can grease them without removing the cover. Keep on keepin on you'll get there and in my opinion have a pretty good functioning baler for THOUSANDS less than some of the newer stuff (which still wear out bearings, belts, etc and just don't seem to be of the same quality of steel. Thanks for taking the time to put your videos together I enjoy the heck out of seeing how other folks deal with the everyday stuff of trying to keep the farm moving forward without getting so far in dept that one can never see daylight. Those children will be learning good useable life skills as well. 👍

Hey Jake, how is everything going with y'all there? My grandfather did the same thing on his 856, and I brought some diesel fuel out for the tractor. Wasn't that to get it started, drop down both fuel filters, and pump it until the fuel filters were full of diesel fuel, and she fired right up, have a great day, and a great week 👍👍

On the head gasket issue on my 1370 the air box cover where the filter is its not a really good design, when it rain alot they leak and the rain water goes straight through the air filter into the intake and if enough gets in the water gets on top the pistions, we ran mine all day once shut it down it was fine, it rained overnight about 2 inches we went to get the tractor a couple days later, im the one that got on it when it started with no hesitation but i heard a loud pop then the familiar sound of the bad head gasket where pressure was escaping, so i pulled all 3 heads had them checked and reassembled with new head gaskets, intake and exhaust gaskets and went back with all knew bolts, that air box cover can cause you some major issues, also make certain the brake on your PTO is working if not it will half ass engage and shread the PTO clutches and brake stopping up the sump screen!! ASK ME HOW I KNOW lol😢😊😮

Nice Case, if you read this and have time could you get the height & width measurements on the fuel tank? I have a case 1896 that needs a new fuel tank Abilene machine has new aftermarket tanks for the 1070 but no one has any for the 1896. I know the 1896 is 65g and the 1070 is 50g but if the 50g will fit height & width I'm going to try one, Thanks

I have give up on having a bale counter. I am a cheater though. I NEVER take the bands off to change teeth. I am surprised you dont have a lot of trouble starting bales. Those starter flappers are worn down. I change them when they first show cords. I have had the same kind of headaches with the main drive shaft slipping out like that.Mine actually caught the hay in the tongue on fire. Good job on the repairs Jake!

That shaft needs the bearing to hold it back as well as set screws on the double roller chain sprocket set up. There is a small hole on top of the frame there that gets down to the set screw on the sprocket on the shaft. The gearbox side has a set screw too. Either get that shaft built up and turned down or get another shaft so the bearing will hold it in. I always have to tack the key on the shaft that goes in the sprocket. I just used the locking collar bearings on everything. My experience with the 2 set screw bearings is when they lock up the shaft just turns inside of them and whittles the shaft down. I enjoyed the video and it sure is good to have a back up huh? My backup always needs work too!

Dad bought a '63 4010 diesel in December 1968. I forget the hours on it, but it still had the factory installed Good Year 15.5x38 tires with pretty fair tread except the prior owner tried to burn his way through ice to get traction from the crushed rock below. Was about 1970 I'm disking ahead of Dad planting corn and he walks by to stop me and tell me something and sees all the dust collecting on the specs of oil. That was the end of disking the rest of that day and ALL THE NEXT day. Seemed like about every 5 to 6 months there was some terminal problem with that 4010 which parked it for a couple days. The worst one besides the complete engine overhaul with M&W 4020 sized sleeves & pistons was the end of summer, the owner of our farm wanted Dad to spruce the place up for a land auction of the place in August. Dad put the Brillion 6 ft rotary cutter on the 4010 because it was the only tractor we had left with live pto, the 6 ft Brillion only had two universal joints on the pto shaft, It REALLY hammered those joints if you turned very short, I chopped corn stalks with my FARMALL Super H and the Brillion, I had to make wide, very wide turns, skip 6 or 8 rows. I'm sure the Brillion hammered the 4010 too. About midmorning the second day of mowing weeds and waterways the 4 capscrews worked loose enough the stub shaft moved enough the speed shift rod or shaft let the 4010 try to shift from 540 to 1000 rpm. Dad took the tractor to the same shop that overhauled the engine to have the pto gearbox fixed. If we had kept the FARMALL SUPER M-TA or 450 there would have been no need for the 4010. Even if Dad had placed one more bid on the nice looking 930 diesel CASE at the auction the week before the 4010 sold. Dad was REALLY looking for a 706 or 806 diesel and was scouring dealer listings all over Illinois and eastern Iowa, and all the auction listings.

We had a 1370 that was fun to run. However, we eventually overhauled both th engine and then the transmission. The engine had a cracked head on the two cylinders at the back of the engine. Neighbor farmer was a good mechnaic, so we picked up a head at the salvage yard and he rebuilt the engine. Eventually, the tranny went out. So it was put on dryer duty and ran it at 1000 RPM as the PTO had to be at 540. Always made sure the PowerShift wasn't in reverse. Compared to running the dryer with the 656 IH that ran on gas, we saved on fuel. Do check the pump if it is turned up. Also, shed some weight if the wheels are filled. The front and rear tires were filled and I think even the Duals were too. I believe our pump was turned up and they had added an ISPRO meter because the exhaust temps needed to be monitored. We bought it used and it came that way, which is maybe why the tranny failed. Hope you have success in the restoration and finding the factory original parts.
