    If you've never heard of or read COLREGS, then any opinion as to which vessel was right or wrong is valueless.

    Big ships move much faster than they appear. Never try to cross. Always take the stern.

    Yeah i got the impression the skipper of the sailboat decided to stick to his guns about being the stand on vessel, I'm quite surprised that the ferry did not do anything to avoid collision, even when going through a separation scene you tend to see the bigger vessels making course adjustments well early to avoid collision.

    My grandson was at the helm with a barge approaching the stern, when a gust of wind caused us to round up. Grandson was caught off-guard and being a bit slow to respond to the helm, I grabbed the wheel and leaded us off the wind just in the nick of time. Pretty scary for sure.

    None of these skippers are qualified maritime captains, just boat owners, not captain and not having captains skills, experience nor qualifications.

    Absolute balderdash. I paid good money for my studies exams and tests.OK so I could not be master of a vessel over 200 tons, so what! I sailed boats from 12 feet to being Cheif Mate on a tall ship during fifty five years sailing and learnt something new every time I went sailing. Sounds like you still have a lot to learn.

  • @oceanfroggie

    @@kengill868 That's excellent for you, but most leisure sail boat owners have no formal training nor statutory qualifications like professional mariners are required to have. Amateurs who keep SAR services busy and treat SAR assets like a break down service.

    i don't see anything wrong. when the bridge detects something wrong, they should send a sailor to thd bow with a portable radio or some flags, for some last second maneuvering.

    My guess is he badly misjudged the speed of his boat and thought he would safely pass ahead of the ship and then took too long to realize his error

  • @winstoncat6785
    @winstoncat67854 күн бұрын

    hi. He's desperate not to change course due to what looks like a nasty (force 5-6) wind and a rising sea. When he realises he won't make it across the bow of the cruise ship, he bears away, the only manouevre open to him, and an horrendous thing to attempt in these conditions. There is also the question of who has right of way. There is a fair chance the sail boat does. But we don't know. Large ships completely disregarding right of way on open seas is quite common. Would be surprising for a cruise ship though. Anyway, after bearing away, it looks like he may be suffering from unbalanced sail forces and the phenomenon known as "weather helm" where the rudder's steering input is overwhelmed by the turning force from the two sails and the boat is at least monentarily unsteerable. He has far too much sail up for the conditions. Bearing away also requires both sheets (the lines controlling the sail position and tension) to be adjusted. He seems to be doing this after his manouevre. It should be done progressively during the turn however. But that requires a lot of coordination and nothing going wrong, sych as a sheet jamming or something similar. None of this is easy under those circumstances. But too much sail up. He should be reefed, at least one, if not two in the mainsail and furl the jib.

  • @winstoncat6785
    @winstoncat67854 күн бұрын

    okay. Now I realise he tacks and then bears away. The tack shifts the sails from the starboard (right) to the port side of the boat.But that manouevre alone would only change his course by 90° and still leave him being run down. So he then "bears away" (steers the boat to be more side on to the wind) which increases the dail force acting to push the boat over. This is where he has to slacken the sails but doesn't manage to cntrol it and slmost gets "knocked down". If he'd been knocked down (mast/sail more or less touches the water) he'd quite possibly have ended up stopped and the boat may well then have turned back into the wind and left him on his original course. When stopped, the rudder does nothing and the boat finds its direction on its own according to the sail forces. He was very close to being killed

    AIS would be screaming if the sail boat had it. Easy to be wise after the event, but the cruise ship is enormous and very visible. I've had a large container ship alter course for me when 5 miles apart, which i was surprised

    Typical sail boater that thinks they always have the right of way , and even tho in this case he actually does. That ship will run him over and not even know it.. right of way or not big ship stay out of there way if you want to survive.
