Bus Driver Life

Bus Driver Life

Welcome to Bus Driver Life!! My name is Keywan, and I have driven transit buses in Northern California (Sacramento) for the past nine years. Prior to that I was a school bus driver in Wisconsin for about eight years. My goal is that YOU get some insight and information regarding the life of a bus driver. I'll share with you why certain things happen the way they do on the bus and public transportation in general! Also, I'm extremely goofy, so don't mind me if I tell corny jokes and make weird facial expressions! Also I am a huge Batman fan! Have an awesome day!

I feel that two wrongs don't make right. Of the way that driver maneuver that bus, someone could get hurt or get killed and the driver could face displinary action 😢 people should be patient and to be respectful to elderly and the disabled as they get on or off the 🚌 bus.

Are you a line instructor/mentor for Sacramento? You would be very good at it I believe, if you’re not already one.

It was dusk, I was waiting in my wheelchair in the dark, the bus driver didn't see me in time and overshot the stop. She pondered for a while on what to do. She then finally backed up her bus to pick me up. Gratefully! Now I was a motorcoach operator back in the day and we would back up our 45 footers anywhere and everywhere, anytime as needed. Otherwise we couldn't do our job. If you didn't know how to park your bus, parallel park or what not, could mean you missed your lunch with the group and you went hungry, so you learned how to park anywhere real quick!! You got so good at backing up, going forward or backward were all the same. And we didn't have cameras back then.

i used to live near a system that had rear door boarding and front door boarding for wheelchairs and had spaces for up to three per bus. also i have in the past when ive had a lot of luggage used one of the wheelchair spaces so that my bags were not being a hazard as the securements used included a built in seat belt for a wheelchair passenger that are also handy for securing large bags XD

As a bus rider myself, I have a lot of respect for bus drivers. The amount of unpleasantness many drivers deal with sometimes from riders is unbelievable!

When I was a school bus driver, the women outnumbered me two to one. Also, one thing that used to annoy me is that during training, we were told not to comment on the children's looks, but in practice, this was a rule that only existed for men. I've seen many female drivers and monitors say this like, "you look cute," or "I love your hair," or "I love your blouse" and face zero retaliation. It's only wrong when guys do it. Like, I understand why a rule like this might exist, but I hate double standards. If it's "wrong" for a man to call a child "cute," then it should also be wrong for a woman to. This is something that used to annoy me about my parents, too. They used to say, "you can't hit your sisters," but they never even once told _any_ of my sisters that it was wrong to hit me. In fact, they would constantly make excuses for them like, "women can't hit hard enough to hurt a man" or "take it like a man." Honestly, they made me not want to get married.

It's really up to the transit company. Here in Rochester NY, we just call them Block Assignment Number(BAN). On Weekdays, the block number are 100's, saturdays are 4100 and Sundays/Holidays are 5100

I had a new to town passenger, that was asking me why the bus, that went his destination, had passed the stop. I politely advised the passenger that if there was a bus already on the stop, he would need to walk along the street, to the back of that vehicle and signal his bus from there. It turned out he was from a city where the convention was to stop at a bus stop if there were passengers on the stop. He seemed to think I was rude, because he had to make an effort to catch his bus.

Not only were those bus drivers pioneers, they were tough! Those old-time buses didn't have ergonomic seats or power steering or computerized tracking or security alarms or any of the modern tools that are taken for granted today.

The picture of Mary Wallace behind the wheel of her bus is probably quite famous. I mean, I'm Dutch and even I have seen it before. She looks so happy & cute in it! Groovy 70's outfit and hair too. Is she still with us? If so, Keywan, you should contact her and perhaps have a conversation/interview if she agrees. I'm sure many people will want to hear about her experiences and opinions.
