Curious, why aren’t y’all even behind cover? Are elk not as spooked as deer? If I’m out in the open hunting deer, they will sprint away as soon as they make out my body shape.

You are the one though who did everything to them. You built a home, grocery stores, gas stations, movie theaters, airports, restaurants, amusement parks, apartments, Dr. Offices, roads, parking lots, sidewalks, city parks, schools all on what used to be their habitat most important their winter ranges and travel corridors. Because of hunters buying equipment, licenses that money funds the state agency that is staffed with highly educated people that determine just how much of the wildlife habitat that has been destroyed and is no longer available or accessible because of people like you. These state wildlife officials determine that a certain amount of animals that need to be harvested each year. They evaluate every part of the state each year they look at how much snow during the winter, droughts, predation by bears, wolves, coyotes, mountain lions have eaten and how many died from vehicle collisions. They look at lots of data from winter counts and flying in the spring seeing how many starved to death. After many years of studies and new research each year they determine that a certain amount of animals need to be harvested. If they do not have hunts in areas needing to reduce their populations then the animals population crash from lack of food and water so they starve to death. Those that don’t starve they get diseases and pass them to the rest of the herd because they are in unnatural population for an areas. This is a cruel way to go and an unnecessary one. You and the other 360 million people in this country live in the areas they need to survive. Because you live in these areas then there is a need to reduce their numbers each year. Every year they do breed and give birth every spring. Without hunting there would not be a lot of the animals you like to see. It’s because of hunters that contribute billions each year in taxes from hunting licenses and hunting gear. In addition they personally donate millions of hours each year on their own farms and ranches and on public land building waterways, ponds, planting trees, removing invasive species, winter feeding programs, buying agricultural areas and returning them to wild areas or providing a important migratory paths. As a reward for this, those who hunt can buy a license apply for a tag in a yearly lottery for a limited amount of tags in a given area each year. The amount of tags available are determined by all the information I included above. Those that do win a tag then have the opportunity to take time off from work, buy all the things they need to hunt with like a truck, tents, sleeping bag, food, clothing, gun or bow, binoculars, spotting scopes and much much more. Making the price per pound if successful thousands of times more than a store bought food. If they are successful and that is a small percentage, they are rewarded with a high protein, low fat, no chemicals, no antibiotics, no steroids all the things in food that people like you deem evil, hunters agree. Wild game like elk is by far better than anything you could ever buy. That good wholesome food only comes after miles of hiking, getting wet and cold, sleeping in tent, looking for days for the right animal that the state has given you permission to shoot. After shooting the animal hunters then cleans and cut up and process the animal. By law they are required to pack out the animal, sometimes this will take days going back and forth taking multiple trips to pack out a 900 pound elk up and down steep mountains in the cold and rain. Hopefully you now realize that hunters are not just going out and shooting anything and that without them there wouldn’t be any wild animals. Places like Africa and other nations have implemented the United States hunting model to protect and preserve wildlife. As a result places that were once in low or void of wildlife numbers are now seeing steady increases in populations. In some cases animals that were once in threat of extinction are now stable and growing. Those who just go kill animals to kill are called poachers and they are not hunters but theives who rob everyone. We as hunters love the animals in the wild and do more than any other organization in the world for them. Part of that love is to help maintain healthy and viable populations and protect their habitat. What most people do not realize, is everyone hunts including you. Some hunt like yourself with a dollar bill and others hunt like I described above spending lots of time, physically enduring energy in the pursuit of the off chance of getting a deer, elk or whatever they are hunting. Not all of those who take to the mountains to hunt are successful and some hunts whether you get anything or not are a once in a lifetime opportunity. For me and my family I enjoy hunting and all that goes into it and would rather hunt in the mountains for my dinner, than like yourself pay someone a dollar bill to get my dinner for me.
