Powerful!!! Porter, Pollock and Elmer are absolute role models for their younger colleagues. To step up and publicly show their realities hopefully makes others willing to do the same thing, reaching out for help when needed. It's not natural to experience/witness such horrendous events and be ok with it. Vicarious Traumatization is REAL for all First Responders. Thank you for putting this together.

Even after leaving EMS after a decade healing was a long time coming. One of my former ambulance partners and his wife just published Star of Life. Although somewhat fictionalized, it reads like a memoir. But the flood of memories I’m trying to figure out what to do with!

Hi,I too suffer from PTSD,I served The FDNY from 85-2000,I worked the Bedstuy Bushwick areas of Brooklyn. while waiting for a promotion, it cost me my career. I was a huge adrenaline junkie. Till this day i carry both the joy, honor, humility, and shame .During my suspension period i was positioned at a desk out side the office of the commissioners desk . I called it the desk of Shame.Something i trained studied 3 years for was abruptly lost. After shameful arrests i lost all of my social networks and life long friends in and out the department and wife. Reinventing myself and a ton of counseling and paying 2 x wife's child support and trying to keep a roof over my head was more Trama and a reality. The FDNY counseling unit was there but still mainly qualified for Alcohol and drugs. They weren't aware that the career termination was the last thing i needed. I needed more support. I'm Not trying to compare Tramas , but from my first day on the job to last Trama was prevalent especially in my response area in those years. I was 22 yo trying to work with Men that were Seasoned, battle hardened, Korean, vietnam veterans. ect...im still recovering

Thank you all for the video. I am currently going through what most of you talked about. My wife moved out recently along with my step kids. That was my wake up call that I needed help. I am currently in the process of counseling. I finally realized that this big bad firefighter that can cope with things himself does need help.

Well done and my helmet is off to the brave Firefighters who shared their journeys. Retired Captain/PM, with 39 total years, 30 as a career. PTSD in the fire service is real. The things we see, smell and experience, most can never imagine. I experienced it, still have that PTSD area in my brain with all of the memories, but a great counselor saved my marriage. A great local CISD and PEER program, helped many of us. You are all STRONG AND COURAGEOUS. Thank you for your service and sacrifice. Well done TFD!!

Retired after 32 years. Loved the job. Wouldn't change what I did. Two divorces, etc... I was diagnosed with ptsd last year. It took my current wife 9 years to convince me to go talk to someone. I am so glad she convinced me to go. I am starting to feel like everything is going to be okay. As soon as I understood what was happening to me, It gave me a direction to go. It was like a door opened and I could finally see a good outcome.

I JUST retired after a 33yrs July 😊😊😢2023. I could tell it was building up.. liken older guys b4 me said you'll know when its time..When my mother passed this year from cancer I knew then it was over. I told a friend my locker is full & my mother was the last coin I can toss in there. I gotta go. Since my retirement I know what this is. I'm finally able sit. Now my mind is just rumbling around with memories of the sh** I did over a 33yr career. I can't believe the stuff I've done. And it memories after stressful memories. Stuff/situations i had completely forgotten about. They all are coming back. I'm not suicidal because I know exactly what this is. My mind is free to release all this. If u think a soilder has stuff floating around up there talk to medic or fireman. I exercise & whirlpool every day. I'm going to be fine bc I'll know if I need to go further.

  • @erok080

24/48 is probably the worst schedule as studies have shown that ff don’t get any real rest, especially coming from busy systems. The 48/96 is a good shift rotation imo. But that also depends heavily on how busy the system is. Doing 48 on a busy system/station can be tough.

@@erok080 What are you confused about? Working on the ambulance sucks, the paramedic ambulance. There's no such thing as a BLS unit where I'm from. All ambulances are paramedic units. I would never leave a dept that doesn't have fire dept ambulances to go to a fire dept where I have to work on the ambulance all the time. Probably for a good portion of a career.

I carried my PTSD for most of my life and it destroyed my family and my relationships. I tried to ignore it and hide it and started taking it out on my loved ones. It can be more dangerous to your overall well-being and the rest of your life outside of work. I internalized the traumas I faced and started tearing myself down to the point I wanted to die and alcohol makes it way worse! It’s not weakness to admit you are human and do care about those people you saw suffer! Please know there are some of us that care about your well-being just as much as our own!
