I was at this plant, with a tanker for used oil for preheating, huge plant and the views of Lake Michigan were fantastic, The trains that run through Gary were flying and multiple tracks to navigate!! The mills are long gone here in Youngstown area, 😩

@@oldgoat50 3K ish through USS Gary Works West, GW East, and USS Midwest 10 miles down the road. Edited for accuracy, I was quite off originally. As of 2023, Gary Works itself only has around 2300 employees.

I work there everyday. Greasy as hell up in there. Especially in the drag house or filtration room over in the north sheet mill.

At our plant in GA, you would have been stopped and escorted out of the plant for rolling through stop sign/crosswalk like that, but maybe it's just video edit.

Interesting seeing this video of the trucker bringing in cold mill rolling oil, probably to the six stand of the north sheet mill. would like to see what that place looks like now almost 50 years later.

Same here Rebekah. I grew up on 45th and Maryland by St.Joe the Worker church. I miss Stanley's IGA and Scarsdale Rx. Grew up with the Plesac brothers.

The best move I ever made in my life was to leave U.S. Steel. What rachet and racist memories. In the 70's I watched the whites get the clean and higher paying jobs and the blacks and other minorities get the dirty ,shitty lower paying jobs.

That's what did my local in. My Caucasian brothers refused to hire a fair amount of "minorities" and female workers while the times changed around them, and those workers made up more and more of the population. They were trying to save the apprenticeships and their journeyman positions for their sons and grandsons who grew up and didn't want them.

Cool footage. I don't imagine Gary Works will ever shut down. Even the stupidest politician must realize we need domestically produced steel. If we ever go to war with China what are we going to do? Order some steel from China to build tanks?

@eric ellis I sure hope it never shuts down but nothing lasts forever. I love the way the mill looks. Some people see a dirty old steel mill but it makes me feel good every time I pass it by on the Toll road.

years ago they said the same thing about sparrows point, lackawanna ny, bethlehem PA at least to name a couple of major plants. i live in wny, and they dont make much here anymore. they have turned it into a "tourist" destination. its a joke. i think we need a strong manufacturing base, i am not against manufacturing..... i will say though sadly dont be so arrogant. they will sell off the remaining steel plants without thinking twice. this country is run by liberal morons and owned by china.

Probably not, but automation has made every worker produce twice as much steel as they did in 1990, this trend will continue as technology advances more and more, so less workers are actually needed, in conclusion, while steel production will likely stop or decrease, employment will as it has in the last 30 years
