Exploring The South

Exploring The South

Being from Louisiana, I enjoy sharing dash cam footage as I drive through the many areas, popular and unpopular alike, in my home state. I will also share more as my travels take me out on the road to other states.

Traffic lights in the downtown area are are terrible. The sensors do not work. You may sit at a red light for over a minute with no one in sight from any direction.

Most small towns in the south are violent. No jobs, drugs, and guns make for violence. Opelousas is the third oldest city in the state. Everything is under lock and key. Black-on-black crime is rampant in Opelousas. I live in Opelousas so I know.

I've been living in Beaumont for about a year and a half now and really like it. Both the town and people still have a real and authentic feel to them (unlike say Austin which has become an appalling shadow of it's former charming self). This video is unfortunately an accurate portrayal of downtown Beaumont, especially on weekends, as most business have abandoned it for more popular areas like the Westend and Dowlen Ave. My understanding is that every few years or so, the city attempts to revive the downtown which inevitably fails to gain much traction. And so the city center remains a mostly well-preserved but empty landscape. Overall crime statistics for Beaumont are quite high, which are somewhat misleading. A few pockets are extremely dangerous, which negatively impacts city wide statistics as a whole. But just as some areas have high crime, other areas have low crime.

I hate the way ppl use statistics to explain negative issues but I also get that it helps when it comes to figuring out resources. But to claim a town that’s 5x smaller than its state’s biggest city off of a 1000 to 1 ratio to be more dangerous than a multi- metropolitan area is wild. Even tho if u look at the number of totals will show a different picture, I feel statistics like this should be better explain to the ones that don’t know any better along with doing statistics including the Metropolitans as a whole. A lot of times the crime ratio don’t really reflect the whole truth cause most metropolitans try to keep the most dangerous and often low income secluded to the slums that often get swept under rug for revenue purposes. But setting that same ratio factor on a smaller city that don’t have the luxury of separating from the statistics or population to even the numbers out, is not gonna fix the overall narrative.
