Self Literacy, hosted by Thabang Makhubela, is a South African podcast that delves into the intersections of relationships, self-development and faith.
I am enjoying the catch up of earlier episodes, so far so good. I enjoy it when men are intentionally engaging about things that matters, in an honest way (especially Christians)

Hey hey Thabang, I am yet to see a person/pastor explain soul ties using the Bible without taking passages out of context. What I mean by that is when they try use a passage in scripture to justify that a soul is tied to another soul, is that passage's theme about sex? For those reasons and other ones, I do not believe in soul ties. Nowhere in the Bible does it speak of soul ties or dividing one's soul with someone else (sexually or otherwise). I think it's a worldly concept that has crept into the church. Though scripture does not talk about soul ties, it also does not condone sleeping with one or multiple partners outside of marriage. I could go on about this but we'd be here the whole day. I just always encourage to read the scripture for what it is and not try read our own worldly narratives into it because that's when we miss the mark (who wrote it, who was the audience, what was the context, what does it reveal about God’s nature and how do I glorify God with this passage). I’m happy for you to expand on the definition of soul ties. Happy to be corrected. Sexual sin is the one sin in the Bible that God specifically tells us to flee from (1 Corinthians 6v18). All the other sins, we have to fight or wrestle with them. Abstaining from sex gets easier the more you understand why God created sex and in which context He has said it to be in (marriage). When we get this, we will get to understand why we feel the way we feel after falling short and giving into sex outside its intended context and the consequences of sleeping with multiple partners. Sin has consequence, whether its physical, mental or spiritual. Sin is forgiven if we turn to God and repent, but there are consequences because He is a just and fair God. I believe some of the consequences from sexual sin are part of what the world has incorrectly termed soul ties. Regarding dating, I personally wouldn't get into a relationship with a man whose motivation to celibacy is rooted in my celibacy journey. I can inspire him but I cannot be the root to his decision to pursue celibacy. If his motivation does not stem from his conviction with what Christ has said in His Word about sex outside of marriage, he can easily fall short and also potentially cause me to stumble with him at some point in the relationship, and me being the reason he decides to be celibate would place an unreasonable burden on me to be partly responsible for his purity that only Christ can carry. I believe that individual sexual purity in a relationship should be anchored on Christ and not on each other. Over and above that, I would then personally request that he takes the responsibility as the man leading the tone of the relationship to safeguard our relationship from potential dangers of sexual immorality/sin (and that can look different for each relationship). The devil is real and at work and does not want to see a relationship honoring God, so he will try attack it in big or subtle ways. However, my individual purity still remains my responsibility to work on with God, and the same goes for him. But thanks for sharing and thank God for the work He is doing in your life as he sanctifies you 🙂Stay faithful and devoted to God in your journey. We can stay pure in the flesh by not having sex but I think the biggest battle is staying pure in mind, which I think most of us struggle with, and God wants us to stay pure in both. That’s the tough part about sanctification. I recommend a book called The Purity Principle by Randy Acorn. It's a quick read and needs you to drop your weapons before you read it to get the value out of it. Very cut throat book but helps a lot with understanding sexual purity in and outside of marriage. I can pop a soft copy to you on your IG or you can get it at a book shop (Christian Book Discounters). You'll let me know. I’d also recommend that we read some of the articles on sexual purity on the TGC website. They’re also insightful. These are chats that are better with people you know but I felt I should share ❤ All the best again🌱

Kimmy, and Rea, this episode of the Self Literacy Podcast is truly exceptional. The depth and clarity with which you discuss personal growth and self-awareness are both inspiring and accessible. Each of you brings a unique perspective that enriches the conversation, making the content relatable and actionable for us the listeners. Your ability to break down complex topics into understandable segments is a testament to your knowledge and passion for helping others improve their lives in Christ and in society. I particularly appreciated how you tackled the topic of backsliding . The personal anecdotes and practical tips you shared were not only insightful but also motivating.
