    I played a 62 tenor for 6 months, but, from the first notes I played on the 82II, it just seemed to have a more complex tone. It took me a few months of daily playing to make the horn "mine", but I've had it for 6 years now and haven't regretted trading up. (And it goes longer between repair/tune-ups than the 62.)

    I’ve had my 480 for a few years now, and I was faced with whether I wanted to buy a custom neck or upgrade the horn. After trying a few options, including both the 62 and 82z, I determined the horn I had was fine, and I ended up with a te1 neck, and it plays like a dream. YMMV, but I couldn’t justify paying $5,000 for an upgraded horn when the improvements are so minor.

    Buffet is a saxophone I've had in my collection since 1981 of various models. I would say that all the ones i've had demonstrate the same overriding design principles, which are to be mellow, rich, with great intonation. This would be the number one go-to for playing a non-solo part in a band. I've never been able to make one of these "scream" of any model or year of Buffet, but I've obviously not owned all of them (I do own this particular Buffet 400). My personal take on these is that they align with what I've read about the original intentions for the saxophone by Adophe Sax, and they do that better than all others in my opinion. I do think they are a different animal than most other saxophones in that respect. Being made in China or Taiwan as an issue, I'll only say that horns are made according to the design principles of a designer, and sound accordingly. I wouldn't draw connections between a buffet and cheaply made horns from the same region, because my experience is that the cheapness of those amazon horns doesn't spread like a virus due to geographic proximity, and also that you are kidding yourself if you think your <4k Selmer was made in Paris :P . In that price range, I think you can debatably do better, and definitely do much worse.

    I rented an SAS411 after playing ONLY “professional” saxophones for decades. My take is that the “intermediate” SAS411 is outstanding. I sound better (more professional in recordings and live) on it than on any alto I’ve played before. This includes my saxes that I previously owned, including Selmer Mark VI, Buescher 400 TH&C, Dave Guardala, The Martin Committee III, Ishimori Woodstone, etc. Perhaps it is the construction and body tube, or more likely the concept that as an intermediate instrument, I can really buy in to the function of this as an instrument made to facilitate my improvement, versus being an instrument that is made to display my artistry. Somehow this approach has helped me reinvent my embouchure from scratch (after decades of wrongness, pain, and inefficiency) while remaining rock steady as an instrument, reliable, and beautiful.

    Maybe you can help me? For some reason I actually am more proficient at playing the soprano sax more so than the tenor. I have difficulty playing the tenor more than the soprano. Why is this?

  • @alamomusicbando
    @alamomusicbandoАй бұрын

    Usually what it comes down to is Embouchure. Soprano and Alto have very similar mouth and throat shapes for full sounds, and also don't need AS MUCH air. When you switch to Tenor, it's a pretty drastic change for keeping everything relaxed, all things considered. Long tones on Tenor while paying attention to the tightness (you want this to be relaxed) around the mouthpiece as well as how fast your air is moving for a full tone can do wonders! - Andrew

    @jwilliams986Ай бұрын

    @@alamomusicbando Hey thanks for the helpful tips! I will work on relaxing up a bit on my embochure. This usually happens after I play on my soprano and go to my tenor. I’m wanting to use the same tightness on my tenor. Thank you much!

    Talking about price point for any new sax is silly they’re all going to depreciate the question is how much Yamaha is about 30-40% Yanagisawa 30% and Selmer is about 15-20%. Just buy used and try these horns just because Joe Smoe likes it, doesn’t mean you will. An 82ZII is not a large bore sax Like a Conn, King, Keilwerth, it’s a Selmer style bore. I like these horns but I do find that Yamaha all sound the same for the most part.

    I have an H-Couf Superba 1 tenor by Keilwerth. I bought it used. My instructor at that time played the same horn. She gigs like crazy. I am really lucky to have found one. I am considering a second horn to play certain types of music and the reliability. I started on a Yamaha student model. I tried out a Yamaha and a Selmer while looking for a horn to buy. They were both new and I liked playing the Yamaha better. I think that if I buy something now it would a YTS 480 or a YTS 62.

    I own one, got second hand for $900 and I think it's great! I didn't realise that my cheap as entry level alto was so cheaply made until I played the Buffet Tenor Series 400, it has an amazingly tight feeling to it

    I had a student several years ago with a 400 alto. One cool thing was that they fixed the intonation of third space C# and fourth line D so they were in tune. But the problem was that the rest of their class was playing horns with the usual flat C# and sharp D. so then the kid with the Buffet was the one that sounded grossly out of tune because they didn't have the usual pitch problems.I felt bad for the kiddo because they were actually progressing well for a beginner, but the "improved tuning" was really making playing with the group a nightmare

    Always liked the 82zé875....and while souind is subjective e.g. what sounds good--i always feel éhear that the Yamahaès hae that 'bite, that to me ' makes a sax sound like a sax SHULDÈ. Even if different people might be looking for a defferent sound qualitiey. Also like the Selmer SBA,Ref 36, King Super 20, Conn 10, Keilwerths SX90...but wit hte CustomZ...no matter what mouthpieceéreed was used...i alway hear that 'bite' ...'texture' ....i like and prefer....I thik Clarence Clemons liked Kingès and Keilwerths..though he did have a Selmer a well..heh...who doesnèt rightÉ :)) (not me) ....also love the ramponi & Cazonni Two Voices tenor...

    Worst saxophone ever. I directly compared a new Buffet 400 to a new Jupiter student model and my old Conn 16M in need of overhaul. Even with four different mouthpiece and a couple reed strengths, I could only get middle register notes out, and they were not pretty. I might try a different one at another authorized dealer; however, I have tried seven other brands/models and don't have much hope this will crawl out of last place.
