A Thousand Generations Offgrid Homestead
A Thousand Generations Offgrid Homestead
Can a Firefighter and a stay at home Mom carve out an Off Grid Homestead in the North Idaho Wilderness? Come along on our journey towards freedom and independence not just for us but many Generations to come, all to the Glory of God.
Over the last two summers we have cleared trees off our homesite, built a pole barn, installed a septic system, dug a shallow well and installed all the underground utilities.
We are entering build season number 3 this year (2024) and are excited for the ambitious plan to have our home dried in before winter. We are happy that you are following along.

Great job on the excavator! Your trenches look great
Thank you!
That conduit is way undersized/overpacked for that many wires. Should have looked at code for packing factors on conduit. Should have been at least 1 1/2 “ conduit. All that labor to dig the trench only to cheap on conduit size is a foolish choice. To say nothing of the wood posts for the rack. 1,000 years. Not really
Great comment. Imagine taking time out of what I’m assuming is your VERY busy day to comment on things you don’t have the right info on. You can put 9 #8’s in 1 inch conduit. They only put 6. Also wood is pretty sturdy as long as it is built right. Ever heard of train bridges or wooden roller coaster.
Inch and a half conduit for sure would’ve been much much easier to pull 6-8 gauge wires through however my conduit scale according to code says I can put 9- 8AWG wires in a 1 inch rigid conduit. Next time I’ll use bigger conduit as to the wooden structure. It’s what we had budgeted i’m not claiming it will last 1000 generations, but it should last the 40 year lifespan of the solar panels
@@1KGoffgridhomestead I have 12.96kW of panels on two IronRidge ground mount arrays. 180 degree & 230 degree. Produce solar for 12 hours a day in spring - fall. 16 panels on each 8s2p. 2 Schneider XWPro (Master/Slave). 2 600/100 MPPT which are 600V VOC and 100 amps at up to 60 V. SOC control on 29.6kWh of Discover AES batteries. Having been on solar for years it’s interesting to see what choices people make when they are just starting out. DIY = Expensive Education for most people.
Enjoy your videos thanks for sharing. From my experience an electric cordless grease gun makes life so much easier. Please keep sharing thanks
Jeff would love one of those
That daughter is cute as a button and I still think he needs his own excavator 😊. Excellent video as usual looking forward to the next one. Your son knows his stuff with the equipment he’s using
Thank you, we think so too. They are both learning so much. It is fun to have them working with us
I love how your kiddos are right there and such a part of the build.
We really enjoy working together as a family. Things move so much faster with the four of us working.
Watching from Alabama 👋👋
Thanks for watching Cathy!
GOODMORNING Jeff and Amy, I so enjoy watching all your videos as you are better than a professional builder. STEF from South Africa ❤❤
Thank you!
See you soon. Can't wait to come, Love Leslie
Leslie, we are so excited for your visit.
Thought I found a good new off grid homestead channel to watch, but I don't care for music videos.
I hope you find what you are looking for.
All you need are marshmallows!
Epic S'mores fire!
That cat crawling under the bed covers 😅 my cat that passed away at 17 yrs old last fall. Use to do that. She never messed the bed up. ❤
It sure is funny when they do that, We are sorry to hear that your cat passed away.
I was here to get more information about possibly buying one of those machines and I don’t know why, but you led me in and kept me interested in your video 😂 I watched the whole thing
it's is amazing the rabbit trails KZread can take you on. This machine was great just keep the track tension adjusted properly.😄
With that many good and straight trees, have you thought about getting a sawmill ? Probably pay for itself short term ?
we would love to get a sawmill but we don't have a piece of equipment to move the trees around and all our trees are tall but small in diameter. maybe someday.
Your bus is awesome. Proves that imagination, ingenuity, combined effort, and determination can produce excellent results. You have the ideal combination of transportation and accommodations.
Thank you very much, it was so fun to design and build
it seems to me you connected those polarized breakers with the wrong polarity. that is one of the reasons in australia they demand "nonpolarized" breakers, you do not have to think before connecting them.
Thanks for your comment, we installed a lot of breakers in this project, which one are you talking about?
@@1KGoffgridhomestead the ones between the solar panels and the mppt controllers. the + sign does not mean that side is the positive side, it means the Positive source is supposed to connected there. it means the direction of the current. so if the current goes in the wrong direction and the current limit setting is triggered or you manually turn it off, the arc suppression system does not work and it might catch fire or destroy the breaker. so in practical terms you need to feed in the negative wire from the panels to the positive side and vice versa. i know it might sound counter intuitive. just do some research on googles or youtube.
Excellent video 👏👏👏👏. I see he still loves the excavator. You got a lot accomplished
Thank you! Having the time with the excavator is sure a blessing. It allows us to get some much done
Good job getting the big plan underway ! New sub , Good base & your going to have a big rock garden :) I've been 100% off grid for 11 years & love it So much peace of mind When you can to it yourself, A lot of work to do but Freedom !
Thank you, welcome to the channel. 😊
Quite a large boulder you dug up ! It’s awesome that y’all are helping your kiddos set up their households. This is true generational wealth.
It has been wonderful to have their help and we are enjoying helping them get their homes built 😊
Thanks for sharing
Our pleasure
Your filming is getting better all the time. You are so skilled to drive an excavator over a phone and not crush it. Your music choice for carrying the septic tank really enhanced the difficulty. Great job.
Thank you Sooo much!
Congratulations on a job well done and thank you for your service to your community. Now it is time to start the hard work of building your homestead.
Thank you, we have a full summer of building ahead of us
Great job on the move and the work you're putting in on your land, enjoyed watching guys. God Bless!
Thank you
Tuned in today and subscribed, from Australia.
Welcome to the channel 😊
Great job .very proud of all the hard work and the family working together love you guys
Thank you, we love you too
That was one HUGE Boulder! All these rocks will make for some beautiful landscaping.
Thanks for your service as a fire fighter. Good luck homesteading.
Thank you
We know how u feel my husband had to do what you did because of health problems we do miss it his heath is not the greatest but we had to do what we did 😢
We are sorry to hear about the health issues but hopefully the change is working for you both.
Just found your channel, and Iam hooked. Newfoundland , Canada
Glad to have you joining our adventure!
Head for the hills.....😊
Exactly
Such a beautiful video ❤
The cats are easy subjects 😊
@@1KGoffgridhomestead love the names
what is the name again of that calculator app that you keep using via your phone ? Sounds like something that I would find useful
It is BH max. We have found it very useful
I’m thinking he needs one of those machines for himself forever 🤗. I know it would be used a lot
everyday I think😄
This is so cool you guys! Great to keep up on your progress!
Thank you 😊
Can we call the excavator PacMan.... aka: chomping huge rocks for the retaining wall... LOLOL....
🤣😂
So excited for you guys how much land do you have there
We have 7.5 acres
How exciting for your family more homes❤❤❤❤. Excellent video
When I was a little kid I thought the dried mud looked like chocolate so I tried to eat some. It didn’t taste like chocolate. lol 😊😊😅😅
It really does look like shaved chocolate. I'm glad you tried it so Amy doesn't need to anymore 😂.
Family on the homestead! Grow that beard out Jeff, you don't have to get a SCBA to seal now 💪
First time growing a beard past 3 weeks👍🏻. I think I'm past the uncomfortable painful stage. no more SCBA seal for me🎉
Hello. I just started marathoning your channel day before yesterday. And I am up to this episode on your playlist. Thank heavens for algorithms or I would have never found you. I am enjoying your channel so much. You two are a lot of fun to watch and it's very obvious how deeply you love one another and your family. You're also so happy and that makes the experience of watching you a hundred percent more fun. Keep doing what you're doing and I hope many more people will find you. Watching you from Nebraska.
Thank you, those are kind words. Welcome to the channel
Great job looking good. Greetings from Rotterdam the Netherlands
Welcome! 🤗
I love that view. Drove it yesterday!
It's so good!
молодцы я с вами с первого ролика. Дуглас ведет контроль.
😂 yes, he is. I’m thankful you’ve been with us from the beginning 😊
great video as usual. a question thou why not process your own lumber from the property? wont this save you guys a lot of money in the long term?
Thank you. There are a few reasons we don’t process lumber from our logs. 1. The amount of time it would take to process lumber doesn’t align with our build schedule 2. We don’t own a piece of equipment to move the logs and 3. The logs for the most part are only firewood quality. That is a great idea though and it would be fun to own our own mill, maybe some day
Too much drone footage. I was hoping for a homestead tour. Guess not.
I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy but the point of the video was to show the progress from the drone’s POV. Maybe another time we’ll do a walking tour
Can't hear you talk for the music!
Sorry
Love it. A Family compound. I enjoy your videos. One of my very favorite off grid channels!
Thank you 😊
I just started watching, do you mill your own logs or sell them to a miller?
Welcome to the channel! We do not mill our own logs mainly because they are not worth milling. A couple summers ago we sold some to the mill and made some money but not anything to crazy.
I’ve been worried about Douglas and Charlotte for months and you’ve perfectly shown how adaptable they are. Great footage.
We were worried too but they have adjusted so well 😊
♥
Thank you
I'm glad to see the expansion. It will be nice to have the kids close to you. Keep up the great work.
We are so glad that Evan and Madelyn have caught the generational living vision
i am so pleased with yalls utube channel. thank yall from the bottom of my heart and may God richly bless yall. by the way, i am a retired smoke eater also.............g
Thank you, glad to have you with us.
