I am just a Dude in Texas that loves music, especially Metal (the heavy stuff). I collect vinyl, cassettes, and cds. I am also a cohost for the Destination Metal Podcast. I will be doing reviews on new releases along with classic releases. Be sure to check back regularly for new videos.

Taaaaype, he say taaaaaypo!
Meh.... I don't think so , they're fragile. A lot of the old tapes I have from the 70's and 80's won't play anymore because of changes in the binders of the tape, Even new tapes had issues
As long as music prices are continuing to skyrocket, every avenue to obtain what one seeks must be investigated. Vinyl, CD, Tape or Streaming, they’re ALL flawed and not indestructible. Accept it and plan according to your budget.
No!! Cassettes completely suck ass! Just junk and a waste of money 🗑️👎
Better have air conditioning if collecting tapes. It's not so much magnetism but the dust/humidity complex that causes them to stick. The tape naturally is semi-moist and would likely attract fungus and humidity. Certain surfaces can attract mold like paperback books foxing or browning but it doesn't affect the integrity of the pages. You should have got your money back on that moldy oldy. Most cassettes were mass produced and most aren't rare. Hit them on your leg before you play them as that will hopefully unstick them. I appreciate cassettes about as much as I appreciate political oppression or waking up 50 pounds heavier.
Easiest format to throw away. I’m glad I got rid of mine years ago. The only good cassette were the blank tapes I made with Maxell and TDK. I love vinyl and cds. Not cassettes. * cassettes lose the cotton pressure pads, they wear out, they tangle in the deck. And drop outs .Good riddance.
Mold on tapes can be a big problem in humid climates. On records too. I keep a de-humidifier in the room with my tapes and albums which helps a lot. Here on the east coast, we get stretches of weather in the summer where the humidity never goes below 70% for weeks and weeks. I'd like to retire to Arizona LOL.
They could dry out as well.
Dont forget about the 8 Track cassets. With either one, you had to worry about the tape being eaten up by the machine.
8 track is laughable!! Muffled trash! 🗑️👎
I put all music onto cassettes. Cassettes sound the best and scientifically, the soundwave is very smooth, albums have a more jagged sound wave and CD's and radio BT is the very worst. I can not count how many times I am playing something and someone comments "that sounds so good, how...?"
I hated cassettes. After a while they would start dragging and the sound would warble. Having to fast forward or rewind all the time was a PITA. However, they are more durable than vinyl and cds.
More durable than properly handled, factory pressed CDs? Only if you rarely play them.
And tapes work the other way round
I didn't get my first CD player until I was about 12... I couldn't wait to not have to buy tapes anymore. The audio quality of CDs, the ability to skip tracks, and the larger artwork were all FAR superior attributes as far as I was concerned. I still feel the same way. Glad I've kept all my discs.
What made cassettes such a powerful platform back in the day was, we made our own mixes of our favorite bands, and then made copies of those tapes to hand out at school our on vacation. it made up and cummings bands spread like wild fire!.... WITHOUT the financial burden or interaction of labels. NO internet! just fans interacting with fans \m/
That's why you get a dubbing one, or a second dck, and copy the original so you can wear the crap out of the copy and not have to worry
CD all the way
No.
I get the nostalgic appeal, but what we didn't adopt in the states, that made it completely obsolete, was minidisc, as you could record directly to a crystal clear, small, and durable format. Japan liked it.
Yeah, I never understood that either. They last forever and were easier to store. Now, as for sounding better, that's a personal preference. I am sure it had something to do with money. I will have to look into that. Thanks for watching. \m/
@@somedudeintexas They never could get the cost down on blank disc's though, so it failed. Tape was always dirt cheap, so it wins there. Who cares about tape hiss, when you could record anything for pennies. Plus, in the early days, tapes didn't skip if your car bumped hard.
Yourube just recommended your video and I like your channel so far. You make a lot of good points about cassettes. I used them a ton in the 80’s with my Sony Walkman WM-2 along with vinyl records. Now I mix it up with CDs, 8-tracks, reel-to-reel, vinyl and cassettes. A lot of times I would buy the record, record it onto a blank cassette and listen to it on the go or swap albums with friends. You can do the same thing these days as NOS blank tapes are cheap and plentiful although not being made anymore. Buy a nice serviced deck or an “ebay special” a tech can look over and refurbish. There’s a KZread channel called “Cassette Comeback Archive” with videos looking at all the blank brands. The general opinion is that in a good deck from the past, even a cheaper normal Type I bias tape can sound as good as the source you’re recording from even without Dolby NR and the prerecorded tapes they’re selling today for top dollar are using cheap tape , no Dolby (no longer available) and sound like garbage.
I agree about the mold and the missing felt pressure pads. But both can be fixed instead of tossing the tape. Felt squares can be super glued back on with a tiny drop of super glue gel and a tweezers. Mold is a little tougher but can be removed quickly and you should always check for it before playing a tape as it will cover your heads, pinch rollers and capstan and contaminate other good tapes. I take a cheap sacrificial cassette player like a Walmart shoebox type, fold an alcohol prep pad gently around a section of tape near the pressure pad, cover with a tiny piece of masking tape to hold it there and FF then swapping with a clean one and REW. You should see the mold on the pad. Just do a FF and REW with no alcohol pad then set the tape aside to dry. Check your deck’s heads for any traces of mold left over and clean with a q-tip and alcohol. You should be good to go.
Cassette tapes were the shit in the 90s, because the Sony Discman would skip CONSTANTLY!!! So, even though I had both, if I was on foot (I was a NYer, so always on foot), it was the walkman, hands down... it also fit a lot better in your pocket.
I had cassettes in the 80s and I buy and support them now simply because they are analog format. Lps and cassettes are the only 2 forms of analog. Therefore if I can't find something on vinyl or if the cost is too high, I opt for cassette. To me, analog is the most genuine authentic experience. That may not be the case for other people but for me, it's analog.
Limited dynamic range with cassette but usually the range is adequate but there's hiss.
You forgot about reel to reel.
For someone who listens to full albums I don't mind tapes, I couldn't afford a cd player as a kid let alone anything to play on it 😅. I never intended on collecting tapes but over the last year I've started to gather quite a few. 🤘🏻
Yeah, tapes were definitely more affordable and portable. I didn't get a CD player till I was out of high school. Even then, because I had a tape deck in my truck, I still used tapes. I didn't attend to collect as many as I have either. lol. Thanks for watching. \m/
I hated cassettes growing up. I now appreciate them. I've been buying more tapes than records lately. Its been hit or miss but still enjoy the format.
I liked them because it was easier to listen to them on my way to school and work. 1987-1994
I hear ya, man. Made it easier to jam out on the way to school. Thank you for watching. \m/
My wife says tapes are junk😂
Yeah and she is spot on!! 👍
Tapes are essential and they are the cheapest format,i love tapes i got 1000 of them .
Cd is now cheaper to make.
@@DorianPaige00 i think your right cheaper 2 make expensive to buy.
Cassettes suck!! 🗑️👎
@@DavidMander-rs4uk not 4 everyone i guess
Great video. I think cassettes have become my favorite of the three formats I collect, although all three formats have their pros and cons. Tape are still, for the most part, the cheapest of the three formats, which means that with a lot of the music we listen to, it's still possible to get some fairly cheap new music on physical format. I'm normally not willing to pay more than $10-13 for a cassette tape, except if it's a rare old demo tape in which case I don't mind shelling out a bit more. In a lot of South-Eastern Asian countries, they have a lot of issues with mold on tapes, but - as you say - if you have the time and patience, itis possible to clean off the mold. I have a couple pf tapes where I need to replace the pressure pad. It's definitely a good idea to have some cheap 'spare-part tapes' lying around. I have already had to glue the pad back on a couple of tapes. And I've had to splice together some snapped tapes. But I find that repairing tapes and other 'tape care' activities is an enjoyable part of the hobby.
Hey, thank you. Yeah, I really like them too. The price is definitely a pro. One thing that I have notice is the new tapes coming out, sound better. Not sure if its better tapes, production, or if it's just because they're not 30 years old. They sound good. I don't mind doing the minor repairs to tapes, it can be fun. Thanks for watching and for the support. \m/
Not sure why but I always have a hard time playing only your videos. The intro music has audio but once you start talking it goes mute.
@lgf213 Man, that's weird. Are you watching on your phone? Maybe try another device if you can.
I'm not into the tape format but I can see the appeal.
Evildead - Toxic Grace is my favorite album released in 2024. Album came out in May and it's killer Thrash. Evildead are super consistent and kick ass. Toxic Grace is the band's 4th full length release and all of their albums are great and worth owning. Annihilation Of Civilization (1989), The Underworld (1991), United States Of Anarchy (2020) and Toxic Grace (2024) are all amazing Thrash albums. Evildead also put out an EP Rise Above (1989) and live album Live....From The Depths Of The Underworld (1992) that are great as well.🤘
1. Evildead - Annihilation Of Civilization 2. Megadeth - Rust In Peace 3. Slayer - Reign In Blood 4. Uncle Slam - Will Work For Food 5. S.O.D. - Speak English Or Die If I could sneak in a 6th album it'd be Exodus - Bonded By Blood
I don't think I've heard of that band but they sound interesting.
You should check them out. They should be on the streaming services. They were popular within the Christian metal scene. They were on Nuclear Blast for a little bit. They started changing their sound after the 4th album or so. They started getting kinda into the groove metal genre. But the first 3 albums were straight up death metal. Thank you for watching Tony. \m/
Super release and great story. I have gotta track down a copy of that. That intro was awesome man. You are good at that stuff brother. Great job
Hey, thank you man. Yeah, it's a pretty good tape. It was really cool hanging out with those guys way back then. Good times. You should be able to find it fairly easy. Thanks again for watching and for the support. \m/
