what kit did you use to make the pen and what size tube did you use???? new sub here beautiful pen
Beautiful pen 🖋️😮
Denatured alcohol is illegal in California
That's what I've heard, it's unfortunate, because it's a great product
Amazing
Thank you
Very nice and for once it's innovative compared to other million pen videos
Thank you, I appreciate that! Don't remember if I've ever been called innovative before 😁
Very odd, I have been using micromesh for years and they don't seem to smell bad and weren't stuck together. What I don't understand is that all the various Micro Mesh products I have purchased use the same color/grit scheme. In all cases the finest pad is gray.
These used to be grey but they changed to pink cause they were getting confused with the slate color of one of the middle grits
@@TheTacticalPainter, they are a great product and last a long time. You can clean them in soapy water. Good to see someone reviewing this product! Thanks!
@marknelson7451 you're most welcome, happy turning! 😁
Ive done this pen myself in cocobola, it looks fabulous.
Thank you, love cocobolo
You are looking healthy, friend.
Thank you, yes I am on the mend. Still exercising my face, my jaw muscles were burning and got tired from eating two corn on the cob on Memorial Day. Most of my face is reactive now, it's just a matter of getting back to how it was before.
Wow! That is a lot of info to make a pen from cremains. I'm all about handling the cremains with respect. These cremains are my mom so I would treat any other remains with the same respect I give to my loved one. Yeah, I wear a respirator when I turn hybrids and wood pens. Thank you! This helps immensely. Please make sure this video stays up as I will refer to it. I'm trying to get my HF paint pot to hold pressure overnight then I'll do some test casting and some with "sand" before I start using the cremains. This was so educational. Thank you for keeping your problem and documenting the process. You look fantastic. I am glad you are getting better and recovering.
Glad it was helpful, I'm going to leave it up permanently as I think it's helpful for anybody looking to do something with their remains. I find more and more people want something to carry their loved ones with them and not just a pot on the mantle. It was lengthy cause I wanted it to be thorough, this is the last item I would want somebody to make a mistake on and ruin a piece simply because they didn't know a piece of information. I could see that being traumatic, like losing the person all over again. That's why I put in the chapters, so people could jump to the information they need later for reference. I have a paint pot that I cast in that has a slow leak, I leave it plugged into my compressor with the output hose regulator turned down to 50 so it keeps the pressure in the HF Paint Pot (pressure pot) at 50. In fact both of my HF pots leak slowly, and I do this for both of them with a 3.5 gal pancake compressor. Just double check your regulator everytime! I'm improving everyday, thank you. Still am exercising my face, jaw got tired and muscles were burning eating 2 pieces of corn on the cob on Memorial Day. Happy Casting my friend!
Beautiful pen. Is the spalted wood stabilized?
Yes, the spalted wood is stabilized. The spalting is caused by a fungal decay of the wood, so without stabilizing it would be very soft, powdery, and almost unturnable.
So glad to see that you are doing better!
Thank you, me too!
I was pretty mad about you allegedly using clickbait on a video, but I wanted to apologize in public. My mom died May 1st and I'm having trouble telling people whom I know. I commend you for showing this side of you as you don't owe anyone an explanation on what is going on in your life. I sincerely apologize for being mad about something so frivolous such as click bait. Mom taught me better than that. I honestly love your pens. I'm planning on turning an urn for my half of the ashes I'll receive. My brother actually expected me to do so as well as make pen blanks with some of her ashes. Maybe you will give me some pointers on making blacks with ashes and resin. Thank you for posting about your health and I hope you recover quickly so that you can go back to doing all of the things you love.
Thank you, I appreciate that! 😊 Hugs to you my friend, sorry to hear about your Mom. I will try and get out and do a video this weekend about doing ashes in resin. It was pretty straight forward, I stabilized the ashesin cactus juice using a small glass jar with a coffee filter rubber banded over the top, and holes punctured into the metal twist lid over the filter. The hardest part is literally the fact that calcium is denser and harder than steel, so carbide is a must and even then it was a tough material to work with. Avoid cutting it with any tools, it will destroy your saw blades, so using replaceable carbide turning tools is recommended, and a drill bit sharpener. Take it slow while turning and drilling and a respirator and filter going always. Don't even take off between procedures cause the calcium in the air is bad for your lungs.
@@TheTacticalPainter I would appreciate your guidance in making these memorial blanks with mom's cremains.
I am working on compiling my notes and a layout to discuss what I found works when working with cremation ash, and different options and approaches. Stay tuned...
We love you sir. May God provide you with healing
Thank you, I have been praying as well, I love you guys too! 🙏💞
You can buy 99.9% Isopropyl alcohol that dries like normal alcohol.
I've tried the 99.9% and I still don't get as good of results as the DNA, especially when it's cold in the shop. The little bit of water content makes it take longer to evaporate when it's cold.
You never seemed like the type to use clickbait and with your skill, you don't need to use clickbait. I loved your pen turning videos and clicked on this one because I truly thought you were attacked while painting. It's a shame people with talent use clickbait for views. You don't care but I don't need to subscribe to your channel any longer. I love supporting channels and not clickbait.
I'm sorry you feel that way, I was not using it for clickbait, I'm a sarcastic person by nature and I love word play, and was truly just being funny. She attacked me with love, it's hilarious to me.
Thank you for the compliment as well, I appreciate that you find the quality of my work to be that high.
curtis nice painting my friend i miss your woodturning videos my friend hope u r doing ok? u take care of yourself ok? just remember, God loves u, God bless. Chris
Thank you Chris
That's what I'm talking about. Very cool.
Thank you
Had a look round your videos after watching this to find an aurora borealis painting video. A bit disappointed that you don't have one, but pleased that you have some nice pen turning videos. An AB video would be awesome.
I was supposed to have an Aurora video but the file got corrupted cause storage on the card got full 😢. I painted it right before this one. I'll be doing more very soon. Thank you for letting me know you have interest in it.

Haven’t used Acetone in awhile but it’s very volatile and flammable as I recall and evaporates fast. Careful with it.
Good to see you, sir! Looking good. Still writing with that G2-writing amboyna burl custom clicky 😊
Thank you! Love those pens, they're a great clicker and G2 is a great refill.
Looks stunning, great work, Richard, Irish Pens, Kells ,Ireland
Thank you, I appreciate the high praise! ☺️
Small barrel hinges might be cool also
I looked at those, but in the end I was on a time crunch and so I stuck with what I knew. Would have preferred the concealed barrel hinges.
Very cool. You need a better live center, I also like using a ring drive center.
I'll look into that, thank you
A work of art mate. So well done. Kind regards, Dave, Beachmere Brisbane Australia
Thank you, I appreciate your kind words. I carry this pen quite frequently
Absolutely a top job. Haven't seen your "Inlay Method" before and it seems quite straight forward. It probably gets a bit "messy" swirling the CA and then adding the stones. Purple Heart is a beautiful wood to work with and your process is really sound. Thanks so much for sharing. Kind Regards, David, Beachmere, Brisbane, Australia
Thank you so much, I appreciate your praise. I love purple heart, it is so much fun, I recently came into a decent amount of figured (curly) purple heart that I'm excited to work with.
You made a fantastic job. It looks fabulous 👌
Thank you very much
Do you know of the denatured alcohol fuel is the same as denatured alcohol? Can you just the fuel to clean metal before paint? Thanks!
Yes, they're the same, some states banned denatured alcohol as a cleaning product, but they can't ban it as a fuel source, so they put that on the can to bypass that arbitrary law.
Curtis you are truly a gifted craftsman
Thank you, clap on 😁
My pens are awesome even after all the years they work and are beautiful.
Love the lesson on Glue. 😂
I tried to remove an old coffee stain off the table, 99% isopropyl didn't do anything like it was just water, then I just used some glass cleaner that contained ethanol alcohol in it, it did the job perfectly
Nice! Just needed the right solvent
Where do you get the opal inlays from? I would like to try this. Thank you for sharing!
I buy the Opals from Woodcraft, they are Easy Inlay Opals. You can also get them from Easy Inlay directly, but if you have a Woodcraft nearby, you can avoid delivery fees.
Where to get the kit and what is the conversion for the G2 that needs to be done
Does the opal dull your tools quickly?
I use carbide tools, and I can feel that the stones are definitely hitting them a little hard and struggling with the cuts. I make very shallow and intentional cuts on them to prevent fracture and excessive wear on the tools. I would not do this with carbon steel, possibly high speed steel, but carbide tools would be my recommendation. Great question!
What is a g2?
A G2 is a type of ink refill, it uses a fast drying gel ink that writes extremely smooth. Plus, most stores carry the pens because they're extremely popular, look up Pilot G2 in your search browser.
WOW! What pen kit did you use? Really great looking pen.
Where can I find out where can I find it?
Where can you find what exactly?
Another masterpiece! Thank you sir. Hopefully, you will have a great Christmas!
Thank you, and a Merry Christmas 🎄 to you too! 🎁 💝
Beautiful pen! I just love these space themed pens. Do you engrave any branding on your pens?
No, unfortunately I don't have any capability for engraving. I have done brands and insignia before printed on a label, adjusted to the brass tube, and then cast that in clear. It works pretty good and you can do it in full color
Great job buddy!
Thank you, I appreciate it
I always have denatured alcohol in my shed. Actually used it today removing sticker glue from a wood cap from my candle. I use it in esbit alcohol stoves for hiking but mostly use it as a cleaner.
what was the refill conversion?
Great job on the pens. I would love to know where you got the tool you use I the head stock and tail stock, to push the pen parts together, they look excellent to use. Beats using a clamp like I am using at the moment. Cheers
Its the best mandrel I've ever used! It's called the Mandrel Saver, and I think I got it from Penn State Industries. I've used previous styles and you had to stack bushings and put a thumb screw on and live center, and this is much easier. It also makes for quick tooling changes when working multiple pens at the same time or changing to do CA finish and change back. Big time saver and worth the extra money in the long run.
@TheTacticalPainter thanks for the reply. I meant the two black things that you used to push the pen parts together with those looked very handy.
@Weirdybeardywoodcraft ah yes, those are a great bit of kit too, they're assembly cups, and I bought those at my local Woodcraft
@@TheTacticalPainter cool. I will have to have a look around and see if I can find some. Cheers 🍻
Hey man I’m a huge fan of your work and would like to buy a pen from you. Would it be possible to get an energel pen with a larger/thicker body? I would totally be willing to pay more because I know it would be more work and materials. Please let me know, thank you!
If you order the Airfoil on my Etsy page and put in the comments you want it for an Energel refill, I can do that. Its body is 2x thicker than the Editor Pen. Plus, it's a click pen instead of a capped pen. If you prefer a capped or want a fancier pen, I could probably convert a Baron for an Energel as well.
Aceton never use. Never.
Acetone has its purposes, things that it does well that others don't, like cleaning off ink or paint. Just not prepping wood for a finish.
Hey, these look great, I'm wanting to turn one for my brother, but cant find a good kit where I could easily switch the ink out for the G2 refills, any idea where to get those?
Hey! Glad to see you posting sir. Keep the content coming.
Thank you, I plan to
Great job and beautiful pen. I understand the glue for the cap, but why the glue for the tip? How will they take it apart to refill it? Also see question from kimgilbertsen8216.
The tip is a 2 part piece, a threaded bushing and the tapered tip. When I glue it, the bushing is what glues in place, the tapered tip can still unscrew so you can replace the ink cartridge. That's why I'm careful to put glue on the inside of the tube and not get any on the rim, so the tip won't glue to the blank and prevent it from being unscrewed to put the ink in.
And I already replied to kimgilbertsen8216, click on the question, you'll see my reply below. Happy Turning!
