Sounds great. Thank you.
Thank you!!🙏🙏
Hi, Mike. First of all, congratulations for your video. I have a doubt. There's an amazing song by Focus called "Answer? Questions! - Questions? Answer!", that has a organ sound that suddenly appears with a certain movement at the beginning, causing an interesting sensation. Soon after appears the Leslie effect, but what I would like to know is if that first movement is caused by varying the position of the drawbars. It happens here (the link goes directly to the point in time): kzread.info/dash/bejne/foxop66jgdiwebw.html
That is definitely caused by drawbar movements. Nice effect!!
@@UniverseofKeys really nice. And with the leslie added at the end, gets better
You have helped me so much. Thank you.
That makes me happy!! Glad to hear it 🎹🎹👊👊
Great video! I’m so happy to have just discovered your channel. I have recently joined a dance/party band so I need to up my solo game in a more rock & roll or funk style. You’ve given me great ideas! As more of a “jazz guy”, I’ve thought differently about soloing but it’s been a great challenge to take on playing in this style. I might be contacting you for more guidance. Thanks!
Peter, thanks for this! Happy to help :). Contact me at [email protected] if you would like to chat more about how I can help! I do custom master classes online and also have an online course. Would love to meet. All the best!!
This is a classic example of one of those simple songs on paper but that actually requires a whole different level of ability to try and actually nail the groove and get it swinging like the great man himself and the band did, Melting Pot is a fabulous track also. Great lesson beautifully delivered as always Mike 👍
Thank you 🙏 🙏🎹🎹
MacDuff was the funkiest and most soulful of all the great B-3 players.
Yes!! Agreed!!
I appreciate your patience and teaching so much but dude remember when you were a beginner? This stuff is SO F-ING HARD just to space out two fingers from a current placement like you’re doing around 1:30. Feels like practice isn’t helping. And they say, “If you’re not having fun with it, Don’t do it.” Well I’m reminded of the days I’d play Nintendo and feel like breaking the controller over my knee bc it gets so damn difficult at times. AND THIS IS SLOW STUFF!! Jud’s getting frustrated!
Excellent tutorial!
Thanks so much, appreciate it!
Finally! Years ago I sat down with our keyboardist and with four hands we did not get this close😀
Hahaha that’s funny! Glad you enjoyed!!
I really like this song, and I've never gotten it from sheet music. This made the riff very clear, thank you.
Great to hear :). Thanks for watching!!
Thanks Mike to this short tutorial, I have being working on it ,where I have also the notes writing, a confirmation of your video , it's pretty simple but at the same time needed a good coordination. Because I play pedal, I'm working on that too.
Kick those pedals!! Bet it sounds great :)
Interesting with the 5th on the bottom … maybe John Lord as channeling Booker T 🤷♂️👍🙏
It sounds mean!
I love the Rheem Kee Bass in the back. My main organ is a Rheem Mark 7. Awesome organs made by a water heater company. Lol
Yes I agree. I also have one of their water heaters!! Hahaha.
This is the only tune I can play on my Hammond. Still take figure how to keep the left hand going while the single note solo lead takes over. Guess I’m too old.
I don’t believe Booker T plays the left hand during the solo. So you are all good ;).
On his “Tiny Desk” performance he did. So I just figured……..
There’s actually a video of Booker T Jones teaching how to play it for keyboard magazine. Only a terrible quality version exists on KZread because copyright. I have an unadulterated version somewhere on a hard drive. kzread.info/dash/bejne/X5-Bs7ubdMLXhrg.htmlfeature=shared
Thanks for this!
Super simple for beginners! Can you do whole song plus improvisation on it
The entire song is in my online course. Solos plus a backing track. www.universeofkeys.com 🙏
Mike, you're the best. I first started playing this song when I was about 10/11 years old on my free casio keyboard. Booker T was such an influence to me when I started playing. You might laugh, I remember recording myself playing the organ part on a cassette, then playing Steve Croppers part on a $10 guitar plugged into a stereo console I modified. I'm so lucky to now, to have a Hammond/Leslie and still enjoy playing this tune as much as I did then!
Such a great story!! Awesome!!
Now if I can only get that sweet growl!
🎹🎹🤟🤟
Booker did it when he was 16.
Incredible!!
@@UniverseofKeys And they were just goofing around trying to fill space. Zoinks. Steve Cropper tells the story somewhere in KZread land.
So helpful and awesome 🙌
Glad to hear. Hope all is great!!
Nice Work my Friend...Simple and Straight. 🎹🎶
🎹🎹❤️❤️🙏🙏
Keep em coming Mike 🔥
Will do!!
Beautiful! Great video. Wish i could afford a Hammond
Thanks for watching 🙏🙏🎹🎹
I have started your online course a month ago. Complete beginner in piano and organ. This is great, accessible and we can immediately have fun. Thanks Mike for what you do
Glad you are enjoying the course and thank you for the support!! Lots more coming in the online course in September. 🙏🙏🎹🎹
@@UniverseofKeysgreat. i have already enough for a decade :)
Perfect :)
I’m an old rec engineer from the the ‘70s and 80s and had the fortune of doing a lot of sessions with some great B players. While I’m not a keyboard player I do own a B. Love watching your simple but cool vids. Gimme some tips on the left hand stuff.
What kind of left hand stuff are you looking for? Would love to hear the stories of the B3 sessions!!
Maybe I should just take your course. Splitting the brain to keep the left hand and right hand isolated from each other is painful as you get older. It’s all about practice. Recording a good sounding Leslie was always a great moment. If the player brought his A-game, it all made it so much easier. Standard setup was one RE20 about 3 feet from the bottom louvres low passed at 1000Hz. Two Sony C37As for the top about 12” away. Normally I had baffles around a 4 foot area if it was part of the tracking date. 3 mics down to 2 tracks.
Shoot me an email at [email protected] and I will get you a discount on the course. Lifetime membership gets you a free 1 hour lesson w me. Would love to meet and chat!! Especially about recording. I have been doing sessions for decades and it is my favourite topic :)
Great 👌
Glad you liked :)
Cool Mike! The reverb adds so much to this one! 👍
I think so too!
respect man, keep it real You did it, just like the record
Thaks man!!
Between my flickering eye lids due to the strength of the bubba kush and cocaine from the night before my replacement front desk assistant at the Internet Cafe opposite the Renaissance Hotel explained his script starts with a track from the doors, Riders On The Storm - he was obviously a very hooked up guy and best friends with Tom Cruise. Meanwhile the new marijuana dispensary down stairs was about to re open after a raid earlier that week - the new owner looked confident
YES!!!!
🎹🙏
Amazing! When I’ve heard an organ pitch bend I assumed it was a VST
🎹🎹🤟🤟
Fantastic 👌
🎹🙏
Fantastic
🎹🎹🙏🙏
Interesting lessons with good background info. You really have a lot of key click in your playing. Time for a new keyboard?
The best!
Thanks Tony ❤️
Thanks!
Very appreciated!! 🙏🙏🎹🎹
Dude. You are awesome
Thanks for watching!! 🎹🎹🤟🤟
Thank you! Could doing slides on a keyboard like the Casio CTK 3400 harm the keys?
Slides don’t need to be aggressive so just don’t hit it too hard ;). Hammonds are extremely tough 👊
@@UniverseofKeys i don't have a Hammond, I have a Casio ctk 3400, but still I'm not gonna do agressive slides. I've tried your recommendations and it sounded good
Good to hear!!
I agree with you about the Leslie "pop" that occurs at speed changes. My 760, as you know, is a solid state unit, but the Combo-2 preamp has that signature pop, and it drives me nuts! I think there's an alternative switch available that is totally silent, which would be a Godsend! Great video, as usual! 🎹🎹🎹🎹🔕
Yeah… it can really become a thing when recording unfortunately. Not a big deal live. Thanks for watching!!
You kind of sound like Norm MacDonald if I close my eyes.
Hey buddy, what you playing, a B3? Looks amazing, love from Scotland
Hello :), This rig is my "portable" Hammond that I use for touring. I absolutely love it. Here is a video I made that tells the entire story of the organ!! kzread.info/dash/bejne/d4Fqz7uzZ7TIj7g.htmlsi=9FuY-i7Sk_OApgRZ Thanks for watching !!
muy buenos tips para los que nos estamos iniciando en la maravilla del Hammond, gracias y saludos desde Argentina !!
Thank you Robert 🎹🙏
As a beginning church organist I am so grateful for this video 🔥
So happy to hear 🎹🎹❤️❤️
Nice
🎹🎹🤟🤟
This is gold!
🙏🙏🎹🎹
Awesome Mike looking forward to even more Hammond awesomeness on Universe of Keys. And really nice video definitly gonna try out those drawbar settings even though I usually go with a few clicks of the 8:th drawbar together with the bottom 4.
Glad you are finding your own drawbar settings. Thats how you make it your own 👊👊🤟🤟
@@UniverseofKeys Holy crap Mike I tried the bottom 4 with the 9:th during rehearsel yesterday and man it's a gamechanger. It's definitly gonna be in my tool box from now on🤟
Amazing!!
Awesome, as usual! Thanks!
Thank you 🙏🙏🎹🎹❤️❤️
