Idiots! the Thing was the best movie. and I loved every scene - the dog was brilliant, the filming etc. It's really Carpenter's best work for me.

I saw Jaws, Star Wars, and Alien in the theatre when they were first released. Alien is, still, the greatest movie theatre experience of my life. I was 12 years old in 1979. Alien had me literally on the edge of my seat at the thrilling suspense filled conclusion, wondering just how big and dangerous the creature had become (looked) while seeing science fiction through an entirely new lens: it's no wonder I quickly became a non fan of the Star Wars inspired tv show Battlestar Galactica (which would be off the air for good by 80-81 ... Love the reboot of BSG by the way). I would eventually see a Director's cut re-release of Blade Runner in the theatre (also amazing ... no narration, different ending) and I was a confirmed Ridley Scott is a genius, fan. As for The Thing directed by John Carpenter I wish I had seen it in the theatre. I watched on HBO and I remember being surprised by the bad reviews (which could be why I did not see it in theatre). The special FX are still amazing, wrapped in an impressive display of paranoia and chills of that realistic antarctic landscape. Did anyone say great horror AND science fiction flick? Hell yeah! I have just been inspired to put in my DVD of The Thing that also adds some entertaining commentary from Carpenter and Russell. 😎 Look to the skies (1951)! Who is the alien(1982)? Classic.

Video: "What happens if we switch the aliens in these two movies?" Me: **maniacal laughter** This is a great video, but there are two things about it that disappoint me: * How can you have a vid about The Thing that covers its influence on videogames and NOT mention Carrion?? It's blatantly based on the movie (with some clever changes) and let's you play as the monster. * A small thing, but the music in this video sometimes makes what's being said hard to parse, at least to my crappy ears. Fun fact: "Alien scientist gets stranded on Earth and has to make new friends to help him phone home and return to his people" describes the plot of both E.T. and the Command & Conquer game series!

Good produced video. I checked out after 8 minutes though, when I realized no actual new information was yet brought to me and askede myself, what even was the point. I then realized it and got that I have nothing to learn here. But many others will surely not already heared all of it before.

I think what sells us on Frieren, instead of a pair of brothers and one being inhuman and both wrestling with that identity, its an adopted aunt or mom even and her charge. Some of the most beloved fantasy stories have that kind of mentor mentoree pairing that really examines what it means to be family. Rand had both Lan and Moiraine. Eragon had Bram Arya and I forget the elves in the third books name. Luke had Ben and then Yoda. I think that kind of bond and not just the elf or kitty waifu that automatically falls in love with you definetly gets it to the right starting point

I think one of the reasons ET isn't remembered as a better movie is because they didn't release it on VHS until 1988. So for 6 years after the movie came out there was no way to watch it if you didn't catch it in theaters.

Isekai's main issue is that it has devolved in a marketing buzzword deployed with minimal effort on any uninspired clones of the ripoff of something that used to be good until it ended or failed to meet expectations. No single anime could ever fix it, because that issue is born out of the greed and laziness deeply rooted in our human genome. Good luck with that ! Tho I see your point.

Always considered 'The Thing' to be 'Alien' in the Antarctic. A bit of a rip-off, cop-out. I think the SFX just grossed people out too much, excellent though they were. At the time there was a backlash on 'video nasties' too with the advent of movies at home with VHS and stuff. I always thought that 'the Thing' did better than 'Bladerunner' so was surprised. 'Bladerunner' got a thumbs down because it was too far ahead of it's time and no-one really understood it. 'ET' was a big hit that's undoubted. Comparing it to 'the Thing' is well, bizarre

The Thing has some *HARD CORE* visual effects that are completely convincing and rank up with any CGI nowadays. I think the original has better effects than the prequel. The cast is great and there are two black characters who aren't stereotypical and aren't the first ones to die. I can watch The Thing anytime. 👽👍🏽👍🏽

This had me crying... Obviously Frieren is a masterpiece of its own, but you analyzed its themes in such a soft, loving way that proves just how meaningful it is to you. Thank you, cause everything you said is exactly what I got out of this beautiful story and I truly hope this inspires someone else to watch it as well 💞 Frieren is a wonderful journey that I hope will be experienced by many

Frieren is just OPM in fantasy setting. It's good story, but for me it rode too much on nostalgia trip (of the protagonist). The good arc is just the exam part. Come to think about it, that's the only story arc in the whole season. And ffs, does it have to introduce every single new character with backstory? Sometimes unnecessarily long. Oh yeah, almost forgot. Every single character does not have children. I found it weird.

Why was this such a great movie? It was an Agatha Christie remake, but it wasn't populated with characters who were so f-ing annoying that you couldn't wait for them to be bumped off. An Agatha Christie with scientists, engineers, and mechanics--great recipe.

10:58 R-rating, panning of the gore (and dismissal of the excellent practical effects), mixed votes from Sneak Previews (Roger Ebert inexplicably based his vote on an assumption that the type to go see "The Thing" wouldn't "get" the McCarthyism that Gene appreciated, and couldn't perceive the acting and characterizations; even Gene could see past the violence and "get" it) I also think the title didn't help. I remember in 11th grade a girl in French class being asked what she'd done over break. She said she'd watched "Le Chose," and the class burst out laughing--pretty much the same as the audience reaction to a trailer for _The Boogeyman._ A simple title suggests the movie itself will prove a half-hearted attempt to capitalize on the slasher craze.

to be fair, re:zero actually covers some of Subaru's issues. I get you point but showing subaru's earlier scenes kind of paints a bad picture for the character when the story has just started at that point.

6:32 to be fair jobless reincarnation does this pretty well, it clearly shows how the main character failed at life and his own unwillingness to engage with the world caused him to be miserable. The whole time in the new world is one big redemption arc for him to become a decent person

This is a small thing, but it would help if you used dubs when available. I listen to these video essays as a podcast usually. Meaning I have to pause whatever thing I am doing (if I even can) to look at the screen to see what scene or line was just spoken. Obviously I understand many prefer sub to dub, but this is less about which is better and more that this is an essay meant to be heard.

Really think Disney Star Wars is missing a beat by trying to retcon and reimagine the series and established characters in the same settings and plots over and over when the IP is mature enough to use as a background for intense character studies and riskier plots and themes. They're already losing fans and money on this current stuff. Christ if they just wanna reskin other stories why not Star Wars: SVU? Band of Stormtroopers? Guy Pearce in Starmento? Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Blasters? Starnado? Starvatar: The Way of The Vacuum? Driving Ms. Skywalker?

I agree with everything in this video. All of the praise, the analysis, the lot. But that video title is pure bait. This didn't say a damn thing about isekai's, their problems, or how Frieren somehow "fixed" them. Frieren will have no lasting impact on the isekai genre that it doesn't even belong to, nor did it sidestep any of the issues that isekai's have except by, again, not being one in the first place.

I fully understand where you're coming from about THE THING being influential in the paranoia theme of THE HATEFUL 8, but have you watched THE VIRGINIAN episode from where Tarantino lifted pretty much the entire plot? If you think he ripped off CITY ON FIRE for RESERVOIR DOGS...
