The part where Stephen istalking about how Sherlock was the original superhero, he is also the archetype for much our modern dramas. His good friend Hugh Laurie played a Sherlock type character in the way of House. Tortured genius, drug addiction, bit of a misanthrope, whose best friend is the long suffering sidekick in a way that bridges the eccentricities of the genius to the audience. This was a great interview.

Once you've seen JB in the role, every film before and after seems to be reduced to a B reel comedy. There is only ony outstanding exception, Rupert Everett's nasterful portrayal in The Case of the Silk Stocking.

Wonderful to see the love for Jeremy Brett. As an American, it just feels like he is so overlooked, at least in my experience. Just want to echo everyone else, he is the best Sherlock Holmes!

The problem for the world of entertainment is that the Sherlock Holmes stories are the best ever chocolate box of stories, plots, characters and settings - but the Brett series was the best possible visual interpretation of them there has - or ever could - be. They are the gold standard for Holmes and the fact that everyone knows that is evidenced by the fact that all subsequent uses of the stories have had to resort to either bizarre updatings (Cumberbatch), tangential irrelevance (Downey), or over-comedic (Frewer) interpretations to retell the stories - making those later efforts only worth watching as curiosities.

The way Jeremy Brett uses his voice is remarkable. It is so obvious he was a Shakespearean actor. I wonder if he ever recorded any poetry.😊

Every actor who has (successfully) played Holmes has added a particular SOMETHING to the Canon, as applied to the dimension of audio/visual expression; Just as those actors who have done Shakespear's Henry V, and have done the same thing by adding their touch to the encyclopedia of expression.

I prefer the Original speaker as it sounds closest to what is on the recordings. Both with and without the LC filter are better than the replacement speaker. Both misses the quack or honk of the original Elac speaker by quite a bit.

Sherlock wasn't Bi-Polar, its well known he was ADHD. He self-medicated with amphetamines and stimulants which was observed by Arthur Conan Doyle when he trained as a Physician in Scotland, the very place ADHD was first discovered. He took a lot of his training and used it to create characters. Centuries later they're given Amphetamines for ADHD (although its still a terrible drug, works, but horrible for the body). “My mind," he said, "rebels at stagnation. Give me problems, give me work, give me the most abstruse cryptogram or the most intricate analysis, and I am in my own proper atmosphere. I can dispense then with artificial stimulants. But I abhor the dull routine of existence. I crave for mental exaltation. That is why I have chosen my own particular profession, or rather created it, for I am the only one in the world.” ― Arthur Conan Doyle, The Sign of Four
