  I know this is old but thank you. Other forum posts I found were like-- oh I sent my cam to sony and they said it was totally irreparable etc etc. This was exactly what was happening to me when handheld 😂

  Thank you for explaining it. Drove me crazy using a gimbal as suddenly the monitor view gone!.Probably someone said this but on my Sony A7ii with firmware v4.01 it was the 4th screen at the very top under setup. Anyway finally can use my gimbal successfully without an external monitor

  You just saved me a lot of work. On the new Sony Menus (A7siii etc) its in 43/49 in video and 45/51 in camera. Set Up>Finder Monitor>Select Finder Monitor

  How do I use the viewfinder when the monitor is set to manual? I tend to use both so the auto function was really helpful but not when it constantly switched to viewfinder.

  Great video. My problem may be slightly different. I had mine set to "auto" and the monitor appears to have an intermittent problem. When the monitor is snapped "shut" the screen goes black - it never used to do this, not sure if it's a camera problem or a setting that I've "enabled" / "disabled" any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Your advice on changing the monitor to manual did work, I do however, prefer to use both, thanks. I have the Sony A7Riii

  first time ever, my camera is pretty new bought it 1month ago.. but, today when i was out shooting the screen turn black without me even being near the view finder. it was going on and off while i was shooting.. have u ever had this problem ? when i came home again and tried it.. it worked like its suppose to.. but hopefully it wont happen again. when u pay so much for a camera.. this is kinda ridicolus annoying... baah.. next time im gonna try switching it off like on this videoo

  Good tip. Doesn't work for the timeout though :( super annoying when you're setting up a macro shot and the damn screen keeps turning off every 20 seconds!
