I've never met an Appalachian man who was both sour and good at music. Thankfully the two seem to be mutually exclusive.

This is special to me. My parents were good friends with James and Elsie Henley. They stopped by to visit us in western Oklahoma on their way to join Roy in Tulsa I believe when Jimmy was 13. Jimmy had won the World Banjo Championships in Memphis when he was 10. Not for his age group but overall. Even at that age he was the best banjo picker I’d ever heard. That’s Jimmy’s dad James on guitar. Jimmy sat on my bed and played my banjo a little then I drove us to Sonic for some burgers. His dad said “keep your fingers out of car doors or we’re sunk”. Sadly, Jimmy passed away in 2020.

The one thing I don’t miss, though, about HH is the way women were portrayed as pin ups. And I cringed when Lulu was made fun of her weight.

Roy Clark didn't just play instruments-he channeled them from God above. He once said Hee Haw was canceled after execs decided it was too ‘bucolic’. Days when Americans watched tv with family. No cell phones or internet. Except this I can replay.
