2:52 Cold frames? Warm frames? What does that mean? Please explain
@UMNBeeLab Жыл бұрын
When hiving a package in the cold we like to put the package of bees inside the box we will be hiving into before we hive them by removing 4-5 frames in the middle of the box. The warmth the bees create will help give some warmth to the foundation in the frames that your bees will be added to. Once the package is hived and the queen is added we will put the frames that were in the box with the package into the center so the bees can cluster on the warmer frames. The frames that were taken out of the box will have cold foundation since they were not warmed by the bees ahead of time and will be put on the outer edges of the box.

. No mow may never made sense to me. I’ve planted many native plants at edges of our yard and try hard to eradicate non natives such as buck thorn and honeysuckle in my woods. I’ve never seen so many birds, bees and butterflies in the 30 plus years I’ve been here and I’ve not mowed in may which accomplished nothing but saved gas. My new mower uses a lot of gas so I will be planting fine fescues. Slow mow all year at a higher height makes sense. Thankyou for putting this video out!

I don't understand the reasoning behind having more than one brood Box.. one deep frame has aprox 4500 cells per side that is 9000 cells per frame x 10 frames is 90k cells in one brood box ..a good queen lays 2000 eggs a day x 21 days =42k eggs brood and larvae at any one time... so by the numbers 90k cells -42k egg brood and laeva leaves 48 k cells...on the 21st day the first 2000 eggs that were laid hatch making more room for her to lay 2000 more eggs...there is always aprox 48k cells available for honey and pollen storage..I actually use 8 frame boxes and the math still works...90kx8 is 72k -42k eqq brood and larvae still leaves 30k available cells for polen and honey inside the brood box.. And you put the boxes on top for honey supers for excess honey..for me it doesn't make sense to have 2 brood boxes..instead of 10 frames to inspect you have 20 frames to inspect...more area for the bees to have to protect is more chances a outside invader can sneak in undetected and do damage to the hive ..

We are located in Minnesota and have very long, cold winters so our honey bees need 75-100 lbs of stored honey for the winter. There are beekeepers who can make this happen with one brood box, however, we find that having 2 or 3 deep brood boxes helps ensure they will have enough honey to make it through our winters. Any excess honey they put into the supers is what we take because we know they should have what they need below the supers for winter.

I know you listed the causes of decline for bees , why is it so ,that 1 race is on the brink of distinction "rusty", and apis is not in decline .??? Peter Australia.
@UMNBeeLab Жыл бұрын
Apis species (honey bees) are not native to the United States and are facing a health crisis and not a population crisis because commercial beekeepers are able to raise and split their honey bees to make more colonies. Often these commercial beekeepers sell bees to hobbyists. The Rusty Patched bumble bee is a species of Bombus (bumble bee) and is native to the United States. Even though they are social insects their nests and colonies are more difficult to study due to their populations capping out around 300 bees with most colonies having no more than 50 workers. Their nests are also more difficult to find as they tend to nest underground in rodents nests. Different species of bees are being affected differently by the various causes of decline.

Bombus affinis (rusty patched bumblebee) is chubby looking. The rusty patch is on the middle portion of the abdomen and outlined with yellow hairs. Bombus ternarius (orange belted or tricolor bumblebee) isn't very big for a bumblebee and is more slender than most bumblebees. The orange patch is on its lower abdomen.

So in Minnesota, should the goal be to have 3 deeps and 2 supers? It seems like most of what I’m seeing online everyone just sets up 2 deeps and 1 super.
