    Can you cure the finished screen with the speedball UV light that is used for exposure??( instead of putting outside in sun)

  • @jessicabroad8480
    @jessicabroad84806 ай бұрын

    I would imagine that a UV light would work. I have not tried it myself. I would look and see how many lumens the light has and how that compares to the sun. The good news is you can't over cure the screen, so if it goes longer than needed, it shouldn't be a problem.

    Can you just wet the crayons and reform the point?

  • @jessicabroad8480
    @jessicabroad84809 ай бұрын

    The fired pencils would need to be "sharpened " by rubbing the end at an angle on an abrasive surface. The pastels can definitely be wetted to reform a point or a completely new shape.

    Thank you so much! This is exactly what I needed. You mention Flint Silica. When poking around different retailers, they say flint is equivalent to 200 mesh silica. I have a 325 mesh silica- can I use that as a substitute, or does it need to be the larger grain? Thank you!

  • @jessicabroad8480
    @jessicabroad8480 Жыл бұрын

    Flint and silica are 2 different names for the same thing. Your 325 mesh silica should work perfectly. You definitely don't want a larger size.

    What kind of transparency

  • @jessicabroad8480
    @jessicabroad8480 Жыл бұрын

    The transparency I am using in the video was purchased at Staples. It was printed on my ink jet printer. That is why I am layering 2 transparencies, since ink jet prints are not very opaque. I would recommend a laser printed transparency if you can.

    Ball Clay is something you purchase in a powdered form. Ball clays or plastic clays are fine grained, highly plastic sedimentary clays, which fire to a light or near white colour. I use OM4 ball clay from Kentucky in this video.

    Thank you Jessica, I have been looking at this product for a few years to make stencils for my glass and pottery. I purchased a cricut Maker 3 thinking it would do the same thing. Because one must manually weed cricut stencils fine detail is a challenge. I used your link to purchase a mini starter kit and am looking forward to experimenting . It reminds me of my old black and white darkroom days another lifetime ago. Thank you for sharing

    They work just fine without the sodium silicate, but I doubt it would hurt to add it. If you make them with the sodium silicate I would love to know how they turn out.

    Yes you can. This is a recipe from Robin Hopper and he mentions doing this. I experimented with wax resist, didn't like the results. I also tried beeswax and linseed oil with better results.

  • @jessicabroad8480
    @jessicabroad84802 жыл бұрын

    Yes you can. I still haven't worked out the perfect proportions for that. I tried both wax resist and a mixture of beeswax and linseed oil that I poured into drinking straws to form crayons. Neither was very satisfactory. If you come up with a good mix I would love to know it.

    Hi. Will this technique work if my clay has some grog in it? Or will the grog cause chipping? All of our clay bodies have some grog in them except porcelain which I do not work with. Thank you very much.

  • @jessicabroad8480
    @jessicabroad84807 жыл бұрын

    I have used it on clay with more grog. It doesn't chip, but it is harder to control where your lines are going. My solution has been to apply a base layer of slip or underglaze before I apply the wax. Since I am not carving very deep this gives a smoother surface. If you want to keep the color of the clay body you could always make yourself a slip from that clay body and run it through a sieve to get rid of the grog.

    How to: Cover a leather hard piece with wax resist. This technique only works well on leather hard clay, too wet and the wax takes too long to dry, plus you risk squishing your piece, too dry and the wax will flake off as you are drawing. In the video I am using Forbes wax which I find to be the easiest to work with for this technique. It dries fast and is slick, not sticky when it dries. I have also used Mobile Acer wax, but I find this too sticky to work with happily. Once the wax is dry use a sharp tool to incise your design. In the video I am using a needle tool because it creates the line width I wanted for this particular drawing. I have used many different tools depending on what line weight I want, from an X-acto knife to a nut pick. Anything that will smoothly cut through the wax will work. Make sure you have cut all the way through the wax or you will lose that part of your drawing. Once you are done cutting, coat the piece in the color of slip/ underglaze you want to use. It will bead up on the wax. As soon as you are done painting you can wipe it off easily. I find it easier to wipe off when it is still wet, but you can leave it there indefinitely and it will still come off with a damp sponge. If you want a multi-colored drawing all you need to do is re-coat the piece with wax, and then follow the same steps you did the first time. There is probably a limit to how many layers you can do and still be able to easily cut through the wax. It will get thicker with each layer. The most I have done is 5, and I had no problems with that whatsoever.
