Brian Riebe Drives Electric
Brian Riebe Drives Electric
Switching to an EV is awesome, but there is a learning curve. When we got ours in 2018 I wasn't sure it would be up to the challenge. Now we're on our 2nd, a Tesla Model Y, and we're road tripping more than ever. We want to bring you along on our ownership experience in hopes of making your transition easier.
I'll also cover other electric vehicles when I can, EV or charging events, talks with other owners, and related content. If you have questions, I try to answer comments, or you're welcome to jump into a Livestream and add your thoughts to the chat. I try to do that every week and it's titled "Everyone's an Expert," because even if I don't know the answer, someone one else in the chat may, or if we put our heads together we can probably suggest a good resource.
So far we've put well over 80,000 all electric miles on our cars with many more to come. Subscribe to keep up with our adventures here, and if you're on Twitter you can find me at brian_riebe.
Let's hit the road!

Epic road trip. Thank you for bringing us along. I hope to one day make it to the Straits camp ground too. Looks amazing. Thank you for the video. I really enjoyed watching.
@@thenetworkarchitectchannel Thanks Walter! The campground is really nice and the bridge views are even better in person. You’ll love it!
Great video! Thanks!
Thanks John, that's very generous of you! Thanks for watching!
Enjoyed watching your video Brian I thought it was well-balanced. I hope to do a small series of maybe six videos of what it’s like to be a veteran on the road. Let’s leave it at that your friend the Highlander.😊
@@highlanderapparel Thanks Highlander! Sounds like that would be a cool series. Looking forward to it!
LOVE that area! Along the shore of the UP was less compelling than I anticipated when we traveled there in the Bolt, but your footage belays that memory. I found our jaunt up the West side of the lake in WI/MI up to Escanaba was lovely as well. Really interesting to see it in covered in a Tesla and the lake views are just as good as i remember. Thanks for the vid!
Thanks for watching Steve! I was expecting the UP would be far more rocky like northern MN. Joan especially was pleasantly surprised at how sandy the beaches were throughout Michigan (and delicious?). The weather also made these views really pop.
@@brianriebedriveselectric There's no way to know how it tastes if you don't try! 🤔
I am planning to drive from Winnipeg, Manitoba to Duluth and spend the night there before heading to Chicago IL and spend the night and then onto Toronto. Sounds like a stop at Bemidji would work per Tesla Go Anywhere suggestion.Agt 100% charge t Duluth maybe I can charge at Hinckley then onto Chicago. Go Anywhere site sugges charge at Eu Claire which seems to assume I'll be at 100% when I leave Duluth. Which seems a bit far. I wonder if there are any closer in case I am unable to charge at Duluth overnight.
@@vincentsantiago6956 Here’s a plan from A Better Route Planner that sounds pretty similar, so I think you’ll be okay. If you’re staying at the hotel in Duluth with the superchargers in the ramp there are also a couple level 2 chargers in a lower level. Another option would be the Carlton Superchargers at the Black Bear Casino just south of Duluth. They’re V3s, so a quick stop may be a good option if you’re concerned. Hinckley is a fun stop for us because of the bakery, but it can get busy and is V2. Both of those stops are down I35 though, so you’ll lose some of your diagonal trajectory and add time to your trip. If you do go down 35 though North Branch is another good option and right off the highway. Personally, I’d overcharge in Duluth a bit and go right to Eau Claire, but do what’s comfortable for you. abetterrouteplanner.com?plan_uuid=26b4b6c6-6d84-41fa-b5de-5ad9ca7e9115
Thanks for the video. I am patiently waiting for the SuperCharger in Escanaba to be available to use with my Bolt. The CCS charger is only one plug and not very reliable making it very difficult to drive from Wisconsin on US 2 to Michigan with a CCS car.
@@acewmu Thanks for watching! Yeah, I was really hoping that would have rolled out faster. Hopefully it won’t be much longer. 🤞
I always happy to meet and support the small KZreadrs special set. I actually did meet you in Muskegon really looking forward to it. PS we are life long tent campers to Buchanan😊❤
Great video Brian! So great to meet you in Muskegon 😊
@@mikesevgarage Thanks Mike! I’m editing that video now and kicking myself for not getting a quick clip or interview with you & Jim. I’m always torn with trying to enjoy the moment or filming everything, but it was great meeting you.
How did you get free supercharging with your model Y?
@@ryanwelsch9384 through the Tesla referral program when it was active. You get points that you can apply to apparel, accessories, or free supercharging miles.
Why did you not use the 240 V outlet to charge at the camp site? Where did you get those awesome wheel covers?
@@ryanwelsch9384 The first site had the 30amp socket and I don’t have that adapter, so just stuck with 120 to pick up a little juice. I knew I wanted to stop at the Mackinaw City Supercharger anyway, so it wasn’t critical. At the second site, I would have liked to plug in to avoid the busy supercharger on Sunday (next video) but the power post was in a really inconvenient spot near the fire ring and I didn’t have a long enough cable, so we just supercharged before we left town. I’m testing the wheel covers for a friend who’s main business is making them for semis. I’ll have a full video on them after the road trip series with my data and comparisons to past trips. His website is: deflecktor.com but the order page for the Tesla wheel covers isn’t live yet.
@@brianriebedriveselectric Thanks.
Yep, that’s a sand. I grew up on then my nieces now the grandbabies we certainly hope be able to make it next year. You will be more than welcome in our tent and we will have free water and barbecue. I don’t care what they say. This year was out free bottled water. And then they said no because of the food vendors and then everybody started handing out free bottle water anyways so better to beg forgiveness and ask permission you and your daughter are welcome to all the freewater you can have and we will have a grill hidden away someplace where we can have some snacks Highlander😊
Thanks so much! Yeah, we had extra water in the car, but that was a hot day in the sun. I'm working on the event video now, so I hope to have that out this coming weekend. Take care!
@@brianriebedriveselectric I remember you gave me a bottle of water ,the drone pilot behind you with the little tent He gave me a beer no alcohol allowed .lol
I remember very well meeting you we had we had a 10 x 10 tent close by and we spent a lot of time, your daughter stole everybody’s heart. We were very protective of her. Got to meet a lot of nice people. I can’t remember his name but real nice guy. The drone pilot is right behind you. Look forward to meet you guys next year, you’re the ones we remember the most your buddy the Highlander😊 PSU may not remember, but I mentioned my daughters also special that way😊
Hi Highlander! It was great meeting you in Michigan as well! She's pretty fantastic & I'm lucky to have her as a travel partner. I hope daughter is doing well too!
@@brianriebedriveselectric thanks for asking Brian she’s 31 now but as you know, they always stay about age 7 she lives in a nice assisted living home and middle of Ohio. She has a job in the whole yard so we’re proud of her your buddy the Highlander I did not realize you edit for Tesla time news that’s how I found your channel.😀
Great video and great meeting you at the Michigan event! Love the hat you gave me! Keep up the great work!
@@craigjhart Thanks Craig! Great to meet you at the event too! Thanks for finding us to say Hi!
Darn I forgot to dip my butt in lake Huron. 🙂 I did find the best cookie ever made near Petoskey on the way home, but forgot to write down the name of the road side shop. Next time. Great trip/video Brian. 👍
Thanks Tony, great to see you out there!
This video reminds me of all the great camping adventures we had with our kids when they were about Joan's age. These are memories that last a lifetime. Thanks for another fun video.
@@virgilwhetsel5289 Thanks Virgil! This was definitely one of the best trips we’ve taken. Joan is so much more interactive and more interested in what’s going on outside the windows than even last year. It makes it a lot more fun for both of us.
Nice work! Have you ever considered taking a fellow Eagle Scout on a road trip to Tomahawk Scout Camp for nostalgia reasons?

What a great Travel video Brian!!
@@evdave528 Thanks Dave!
Your vids have improved to the point where I hardly speed through any of it. Great music and editing, Brian! I also detest the Chicago traffic, so it was a pleasure to see an alternative route for heading East of the Mississippi!
@@baldbikeboy thanks a lot! Yeah, this route was longer, but much more pleasant & stress free.
Road trips are fun. Rainy Sunday morning here but it looks to be clearing so I will ride the Toro for a couple of hours soon.
@@gerhardk98 it’s good to get outdoors one way or another! 😄 I think that’s in the cards for me today too.
Wow! you've been busy!! Looking forward to the videos and LOL'd at your intro!!
I gotta know the numbers on those wheel covers and where to get them! 1:54
Incredible production quality and editing. You outdid yourself. Impressive work!!
Thanks a lot! These quick ones are fun to do.
Looking forward to the videos!!
Woot! And that extra bit of production effort is surprisingly effective!
Thanks!
It has been a while since I came across one of your videos, it was enjoyable as usual. Who knows we might have crossed paths, I spent a weekend (June 21 to 23) motorcycle camping up in Interlochen Michigan for the longest day of the year. The Detroit BMW touring club organizes this event annually.
Cool! Yeah we may have. I hope you had a great trip!
@@brianriebedriveselectric It was a good trip, Saturday the weather was a bit wetter than ideal for tenting but spirits were high.
Great promo video! Now I can't wait!
Thanks!
Brilliant!
@@thefivecount Based on a true story!
Fun video as always.
Thanks Virgil!
Brian, your videos are wonderful in so many ways. I'm really looking forward to them.
@@lsauve Thanks a lot! These trips should be pretty fun to see.
i need to know about those wheel covers! please!
Thanks!
Nice video thx for putting these out. If you have time, Question: Does the Tesla software projection for battery percentage remaining at a destination take into account the age and condition of that vehicles particular battery pack, or is it a projection that always assumes a new battery pack? (therefore the prediction becomes "overly optimistic" as time goes by)
so cool to see people actually sitting in it.. i help make the front seats at the gigafactory.. but we just crank em out and don’t get too see them in use.. i ordered my CT when announced and figured the best way to expedite things was to just start working here😂😂😂.. and i enjoy your videos and reports!
Nice rainbows!
Double the pleasure, double the fun!

Nothing beats the model Y.
Travel season is officially underway... ⚡🛣️ Thanks for kicking us off with a wonderful trip!
Thanks Steve! Happy trails to you and your family this summer!
Never driven such an easy car, and Tesla road trips are the best I've experienced by a very wide margin. Congrats on keeping your family in the safest car on the road.
Thanks & Thanks for watching! We'll see you in a couple weeks in Michigan!
Nice! I'm super curious about those wheel covers! A web-search for "range maker" yields nothing. Drive a lot so you can make a video soon!!!!
Thanks for sharing your trip. Beautiful countryside in MN.
Thanks for watching! Yeah, this is about the best time of year in my opinion, the greens really pop.
Looks like it was a fun trip!
If you ever need to make a pizza just run out to your car borrow one of those voila Pizza Pan
Great idea! 😆 Might be able to do some stir fry too.
Always like the travel music Brian. 👍 My average Wh/mi is 231 on my M3 refresh. Impressive. The photon wheels might be the difference. Best I got on my previous M3 was 263. Safe travels.
Thanks Tony! Interesting stats, I seem to always live above 300, both in our Model S and the Model Y historically. So far with the new covers we're below that, so good initial impressions.
Very nice video!!
Thanks Dave!
Awesome video and liking the red white and blue cap
Thanks, and thanks for the hat! Looks sharp and fit in with the holiday weekend!
What a delightful little video. Enjoyed every minute of it. We have two 50Amp RV outlets at our cabin so can charge there but don't get back east river often enough. Looking forward to seeing more of your summer adventures.
Thanks Virgil! I just booked the last couple campsites, so things are shaping up for a busy June. It's going to be a lot of camping and a few endurance days of driving. Should make for good videos. 🤞
