Richard the mold fibers have penetrated the wood and has started the decomposition. I was taught to burn all wood that mold has turned black, but there are a few ways to get the mold out or at least kill the fibers of the mold. Bleach Chlorine bleach can kill mold spores and other microbes, and remove stains. For tough mold stains on unsealed wood, you can mix 1/2 cup of bleach with 1 tablespoon of dishwashing liquid and 1 cup of warm water. Apply the solution with a soft brush, let it air dry, and buff with a soft cloth. Also Oxalic acid is best for spot-treating wood to remove set-in stains. You can find it at most hardware stores. Oxalic acid usually comes in powder form, which you can mix in with water when you're ready to use it. This method also works for finished and unfinished wood. Or try OxiClean Versatile Stain Remover to clean unfinished wood decks. Here are some tips for using OxiClean on unfinished wood: Prepare the solution: Follow the package instructions to mix the OxiClean into a solution. You can use a scoop to measure out 2-4 lines of OxiClean per gallon of water. For best results, mix until the OxiClean is completely dissolved. Apply the solution: You can apply the solution with a sponge, cloth, brush, or by pouring it directly onto the wood. Let it sit: Allow the solution to sit on the wood for 5-30 minutes. Scrub: Scrub the wood as needed. Rinse: Rinse the wood thoroughly with cool water and blot until dry. Work in small areas: When working with large surfaces, work in small sections so the solution doesn't dry on the wood. Use within 6 hours: Use the solution within 6 hours of preparing it.
