    Interesting video, thank you. My biggest takeaway was had those East German dorky helmets been designed during Hitler’s reign, the guy would have been sent to the Russian front.

    When we were under 18 we did this trip to get cheap alcohol and cigarettes at the Intershop in Friedrichstraße station. Walking through the transit areas of the station was a weird experience.

    I used to have a teacher around her early 60s in 2013 who told us about the very first class she was teacher of when she asked us where to travel for a class trip and we said "where did you have been before with other classes?" she told us that she was in East Berlin around 1981 and than said "but it wasn't the best choices we made. So we decided to visit both, east and west berlin. One boy bought a gift and got it wraped in newspaper-pages in West Berlin. However when he traveld to the east, they confiscated his gift that he wanted to bring to out town (in Nordrhein-Westfalen, west of Germany) and he almost ended up in jail for that" she explained how they almost didn't let the boy come back to West Berlin, just for having newspaper-pages in his backpack when entering East Berlin

    So is this footage being recorded on the Western side of the wall, or is it actually inside East Berlin that we're seeing here?

  • @JanPBtest
    @JanPBtest21 күн бұрын

    It's East Berlin until 4:47 when we "jump" to West Berlin. The reason the areas near the wall on the western side look so dilapidated is that for obvious reasons the _entire_ wall installation was erected on the territory of East Berlin, and that included a strip of land on the western side. The width of that strip varied, sometimes it was quite wide. But West Berlin could not do anything there, no cleanup, no development, no western police could set foot on that strip either. That's why gray-area businesses like a travelling circus (seen at 12:54) liked to park there. The areas further away and West Berlin itself looked very spiffy, like West Germany or Switzerland. One sure way to tell which side you're in, is the wall graffiti: only on the western side (you'd be likely arrested if you did that on the eastern side).

    @@JanPBtest How did you cross the border? Did you have permission to travel?

  • @JanPBtest
    @JanPBtest15 күн бұрын

    @@DailyKosia You only needed a passport. And this was only for the East Berlin border control, there was no West Berlin control of any kind. So even if you were from a country that West Germany would require that you obtain a German visa first, this did not apply to West Berlin. Just a passport to humour the East German border guards.

  • @JanPBtest

    In 1987 on a two day trip to Berlin from West Germany. First day west, second day east. The overall impression in East- Berlin wasnt bad. Less commerce, less cars, less people in the streets. Officers of the NVA, i.e. the army of the then GDR, walking proudly in groups of two to four. Police men were always present as well, but not too much. No graffiti, that goes without saying, in the east. On the western wall side a „Hayek power“ graffiti. You wouldnt then in the west and you will not now encounter such officers‘ pride in the streets of contemporary Germany. Unthinkable.

    I lived in Steglitz (Berlin) for a short while in the 1980s. I'm American. After a few beers we would often go to the wall in full view of the DDR guards and drop pants and moon the guards- and the obligatory middle finger sign.

    Thank you for the note! The images look odd today, as in "how on earth was such a thing even possible in the middle of Europe??" But I remember very well that in 1980s one could not imagine Berlin _without_ the wall, it was just a part of "normal life". A weird relativity.

    The DDR had many positive Social conditions that gave people a equal chance of education work career but their paranoia undid the positives and lead to their own demise. They could have been a great example of how to run a Socialist country for the better of all alas it was not to be .

  • @JanPBtest

    No, it was _much_ worse than that. It only seems this way now and in theory. This is hard to explain but basically life consists of _much_ more than just equal chance of education, cheap rent, etc.

    I was crossing from East to West Berlin on 30th of July 1981 , it was my trip from "hell to heaven". Never go back. Remember the streets and how it all was different on both sides of the wall. Dangerous times, hard to believe that ended ,hard to believe they killed people trying to cross the border.Some in 1989 !!! So close to freedom, just days or months ,poor people. Thanks for this film, good quality for that times and good documentary.

  • @JanPBtest

    Thanks for your comments! Yes, everything was different, including the smells. As for the quality, this is a Hi8 metal-evaporated tape which, surprisingly, holds up very well to this day (the video transfer was done not too long ago), it only required the "baking" treatment after 30+ years in storage. I'm really amazed how those super-tiny analog video tracks on a very thin tape still have practically no dropouts. Another bit of luck was that a few months before my visit Canon introduced the stereo AFM sound to the Hi8 format which greatly improves the end result.
