    I'm currently running this adventure using the Hyperborea rpg, and it's going quite well. The only thing I don't get about this module is how the tomb robbers were turned into ghouls. I get that it was due to a curse tied to the Serpent Mound, but how did they die in the first place to end up coming back as ghouls?

  • @Spacewitchofthelittledancer
    @SpacewitchofthelittledancerАй бұрын

    Isn't there some kind of worm is feeding on their brain that crawls out of their faces after they get killed? If not you may want to considered adding some brain worms to crawl out of the ghoul faces to attack your party, it could even turn one of THEM into a ghoul, how fun!

    I found my first RPG in the form of the first german Traveller-Edition and it never left me.. Fantastic game in all aspects, it took me to so many other creative things besides the roleplaying (Drawings of Characters, Maps, thinking about worlds, technology, plotting of storys, etc.). To me the best part of it is the sandbox-character with a simulationist-style-set of rules (wich the Referee can always calibrate to the needs of the specific group). You had to make up your own mind about "what is the feel" of characters and worlds, still you had enough hints, to make something of the given elements within your own imagination. Your video might attract some newcomers, which is great!

    I don't want to disappoint. But, I have just made it official via email that I am stepping down from doing internet and in-person RPG stuff indefinitely. I will still be running private groups occasionally but for personal reasons I feel it is in the best interest of my mental health and personal well being to step back for the foreseeable future. It has been wonderful and I've loved this more than anything, seeing everyone's comments and subs never failed to bring a smile to my face. I wish you all the best at your own tables in the future.

    The magic system is way too complicated. Wizards in the major source materials & movies don’t have to worry about that junk.

  • @Spacewitchofthelittledancer
    @Spacewitchofthelittledancer2 жыл бұрын

    Those familiar with the term "Vancian Magic" will disagree with you. DCC's lack of spell slots mechanics make it far easier to grasp for new players and the variable spell effects and manifestations create a sort of chaotic magic that gives players freedom & control over their spells and make the magic in the game feel more alive than traditional static effect spells. The ability to burn stat points mirrors the overexertion of spell-casters and other "magic" users from lots and lots of media from Lord of the Rings to Stranger Things. While I can understand how from an outsider perspective the magic can seem overly complicated. But when a player has their physical spell book in front of them at the table and is casting spells will careful consideration for the ripple effects that will take place as they change reality to suit their needs or makes a Gandalfesque self sacrifice to safe the party you'll find that the magic system in DCC is far closer to the major source material and movies than you expected.

    Mongoose Traveller have removed the 'dying' from Character creation and changed it to extremely badly injured.

  • @Spacewitchofthelittledancer
    @Spacewitchofthelittledancer2 жыл бұрын

    Yes and no. While the automatic dying from a failed survival check is removed, it is still possible to die by having a stat reach zero during character creation. It’s a lot harder to pull off but it’s definitely possible to be in a career path without medical aid and not be able to get the kind of intervention you would need to survive a major injury. It’s still “possible” but a lot more unlikely.

    How would you tweak it to avoid a total party kill?

  • @Spacewitchofthelittledancer
    @Spacewitchofthelittledancer2 жыл бұрын

    Its written well enough that it’s sort of unlikely to happen. There is a tower with NPCs that can replace fallen PCs. (However this, and a lot of combat, can be skipped entirely) The boat on the starless sea and final battle sequence that immediately follow can be treacherous but I wouldn’t change them at all. TPKs are a part of the game in a sense and I always roll my dice in front of the players. That being said you can always try to be cinematic instead of simulationist. Sure, you COULD attack with every single beast-man on the ziggurat all in one round and just wipe the party. But letting the party scheme a bit and sneak most or all of the way up the proto-pyramid will give you a great battle at the top which you can slowly funnel enemies into. Side note: there is a supplement to the adventure in some later additions that adds another room to the original dungeon. I would skip this bonus room entirely as it is super deadly and maybe a little too obtuse for new players.

    I suggest picking a few scifi Properties to build your setting around and make sure your players are familiar with them. This helps put everyone on the same page. I don't heavily rely on the art in the Mongoose books; so if I say "The Runabout comes in hot and slams down in the pad." everyone at the table knows what I'm talking about and has a visual image of it in their heads. I found referring to the ships/items by name in the books confused people and held up the game. I mostly use: Altered Carbon, Foundation, and Dune bastardized into the Official Traveller Universe.
