  I hiked up this mountain with my Boy Scout troop and camped near the peak. It had the most beautiful views I’ve ever seen and was the most physically challenging hike I’ve been on in a while, but it was extremely fun. If you every plan on coming here note that the temperature gets very cold in the fall and early spring near the top due to the wind, it’s wet alot due to mist and fog in the air, and the ground is very steep. Pack accordingly to that and you will have alot of fun.

  The law...yeah my 2nd Amendment. Weight? that's only for those ultra-lighters. Would bear spray deter mountain lions? also, mountain lions STALK their prey. Humans are also the biggest threat. Always carry your pistol in a holster. ALWAYS.

  You ought to go to looking glass mountain at Pisgah national Forest. The hike is straight up so it's challenging in that right but it's nowhere near what y'all just did on this hike. But the view is absolutely incredible

  I got the size small bc my torso is 16" and had asked REI Chat which size to get. He advised the small. I have to return it because it's too big for me 😞. Everything about it is fantastic... except for the front pockets. They are TINY and cannot fit my phone. Literally the only downfall I can see on it.

  From my experience in the wild here are my opinions on what to use for which animals. 1.) I’d recommend bear spray for big bear attacks 2.)For coyotes, a pellet gun or whistle, 3.) Mountain lion you’ll need a Multi round pistol or a rifle/shotgun. 4.) A moose you’ll need a rifle or bear spray. The creatures can be bigger than cars so you’ll need a lot to protect against them. 5.) For humans I’d recommend a taser or pepper spray. 6.) Wild dogs or sick animals a gun would be best in case of your safety. Pepper spray will work with most animals however some animals are more susceptible to it than others. That’s why understanding what animals are near your area would be important to understand before backpacking or camping.

  Anyone with a CCW is not going to put the weapon in the pack, it`s not pack weight, it`s normal EDC weight and the person is accustomed to it ! If you are carrying for protection, why would you bury it in your pack, it has to be quick access ! You are not taking into account all the missing people, they are not all animal attacks, accidents, health issues and getting lost, if you think they are you are being naive ! A lot of them are very experienced outdoors men, (or women) and there are a lot of shady people in this world . It`s not all kumbaya and friendly, happy people. Since 1974 there have been 13 murders on the AT and on average about 6 people a year go missing. The question is are you willing to take the chance you might be one of the unlucky ones, whether it`s from an animal or an evil human being ?

  It's nice to have an island under the stairs, but I wouldn't want to prepare my food on that all the dust and sand comes down through the steps This is in the wrong place for hygienic reasons
