    Can you use Gesso in your coloring books, such as yours? Great video. (LW)

    I actually haven't tried trying gessoing any of my coloring book pages, but you could give it a go and see what happens! (And if you do, let me know how it turns out!) 😃 I've used Poscas with 1-MR nibs on my coloring book pages (to color the entire page) and the paper held up surprisingly well. Got a bit buckled from the paint, but not too bad. 😊

    In art history class I had learned that any blue dyes (and even some pigments) are more fugitive than yellows, oranges, and browns. This is why blues, greens, violets and some darker reds/maroons are affected. This can be seen in historical pieces of clothing, tapestries, and rugs that degrade/fade.

    How much color shadw should I buy for a beginner? 48 , 60 or 120m

  • @thaneeya
    @thaneeyaКүн бұрын

    One factor to keep in mind is that the more colors you have, the more smooth blends you can make. So it's better to get a bigger set if you can afford it, although starting with 48 or 60 colors can still give you a good sense of what it's like to use the markers. Then later you can buy more colors if you really like using them. Hope this helps! 😃

    Thank you so much for your videos. You are very good at explaining in human way! ;-) I've just started drawing, and I need to understand a bit, mixing the different colors, is it just something you try, or can you explain colors in some way? Hope you understand. Kind regards, Maja from Denmark

    Feeling weirdly conflicted, since I was thinking of getting into alcohol markers. I mostly wanted to use them to sketch concepts, but I hadn't realized they faded within weeks. I know it won't matter if I am simply concepting but, hmm... things to think about for sure

  • @thaneeya
    @thaneeya2 күн бұрын

    Most colors can last for years if you keep them out of sunlight - there are only a few colors that fade within weeks (like my beloved Copic V04). Different brands have different color formulations, so rates of fading may differ. But if you want to use alcohol markers to sketch concepts that you keep in a sketchbook or binder, then there's a good chance that most of the colors may last for many years. And for sketching, alcohol markers might be worth it for the convenience. Just something to keep in mind! 😃

    @@thaneeya Indeed, and you are right as well about the other ways I can preserve the colors and image. Scanning and photography might be the way I go in-case I want to store the ideas for a more finished piece afterwards. I also thought that some of the fading in your works didn't take away from the beauty. I love the muted look, so I might actually be able to take advantage of that too lol. Thank you so much for the video btw. I'd heard about lightfastness before, but your explanation was so concise and thorough the way you explained it here and I learned about new terms too. It's a really fascinating almost hidden detail you really don't hear about art materials! I enjoyed it and felt I learned a lot from it too

It's nice to hear that you think my faded art still looks good. It can be interesting to observe how the artwork changes over time as some of the colors start fading! 😊

    Thanks so much! It's worth experimenting with the colors you have to see what kind of blends you can make. Even if you can't match these exact color blends, you might be able to come up with something that looks really great with the colors that you do have! 😃🎨

    I scan every alcohol marker piece I create as soon as it's done, and store them in boxes. Anything that's getting displayed gets varnished, but I don't use markers in commissions.

    I started using watercolor pencils about a year ago and I found I enjoyed them so much more than alcohol based markers. I feel I have more control over blending with them and they seem to stay pigmented nicely. I also have watercolor markers which blend even nicer, but you know what will fade. Still makes lovely work, though.

    I use pencils with marker and that’s probably another reason for less fading on my works. Then again I use archival paper, seal the originals in plastic and then store them in a dark folio in a dark place. My stuff hasn’t faded that much at all as a result. This is still important information for people to know before hanging up marker art or selling it mind you.

    I love paint markers. I have a large set of Karin decobrush pens and they are lovely. It’s like a very, very convenient way to paint, once you find a paper that works well with them.

    I didn't know the difference between dye and pigment before - thanks! I believe the reason watercolour paintings don't sell for as much as oils is because historically, watercolour paints were very fugitive. We now have the technology to prevent them fading, but the perception of watercolour as a "temporary" medium lives on. The whole business of trying to make colours last in art is really interesting, thousands of years of experimentation.

    Honestly, I've always been one of those people who finishes a drawing, and basically never looks at it again once it's done. It gets photographed or scanned, and, unless I randomly open that page of my sketchbook again, chances are, I'll never look at the original again. Nearly 40 years of art creation means that realistically, there are many many pieces of my art that I will never again look at. And that's okay. A lot of the art I've created has been practice pieces, or personal development pieces. Those pieces that aren't are generally pieces I planned to share online in the first place so the original piece isn't as important as the digitalized version of it. I have some works of art I created when I was a young child that I still own, and they're wonderful for nostalgia, but really nothing amazing to look at. Amusingly, some of my teenaged forays into digital art - when graphics tablets were still just coming onto the market, and Jasc Paintshop Pro was one of the readily available pieces of software still stand up well in terms of composition, though maybe less so in technique. I still have much of my original digital artwork stored both in the cloud, and on floppy disks. The same is true for my physical art, in multiple media - I have many pieces stored, either in sketchbooks that I never open unless I'm looking for a particular piece to talk to a new artist about where I started, to give them some encouragement, or canvasses stored in a box under my bed, and again, never looked at after finishing them. What I should probably do is remove the canvases from their frames and store them as cut flats instead, just to save on space. I think one of the most important things I learned in my development as an artist is the mentality of always looking to the next step, the next piece, the next bit of learning - it's made me less precious about my originals, as they're all simply steps along the way of improving my skills. I'm not Picasso, I'm not Banksy, I'm not Warhol. I'm Kidar. I'm not likely to ever be part of the crowd where that long-term archival and survival of the originals is important. And that's a good healthy outlook for me. I may be buying higher quality art supplies as my skills develop, but it was never about having it survive a long time, only about access to materials that don't hold me back with their limitations.

    I appreciate your thoughtful comments on this topic! 😃 Most of my art is stored away in boxes, binders or sketchbooks, and honestly I don't look through them that often, because I focus on the next piece, and the next, etc. I enjoy the act of creating so it doesn't bother me if the original pieces don't last forever. 😊 Thank you for sharing your perspective! 🎨
