Second comment - what I learned from this podcast is that Americans are uniquely stupid when it comes to inhabiting and travelling across the landscape despite being smart in some other areas of life.

Boston had 452 miles of streetcar lines most of which fed into the Green Line but all but 3 surface trolley lines were eliminated and 1 was trimmed, even though 3 grade separated light rail lines were built (Riverside, Union Square, Medford Tufts). Fewer trams operate inside the tunnel today than trolleys did decades ago yet travel times are longer and service more unreliable.

Excellent critical analysis on Moses' transformation. What a feud on Order Number 129. Pretty impressive for Moses to outmaneuver the President and not back down on Triborough.

To think a man from Providence has done this. I’ve been living in RI, Prov all my life and I always thought to myself, “could you live in the mall fr ?” That’s an amazing story and best rent-free home ever I bet.

Once I'm reading it's great, but if I put it down it really becomes hard for me to pick it up again. It is so funny, in a really devious politicians way. By the way, Smith and Mrs Moskowitz know Moses set all that entrenched power for himself, there is a line in there about that. Really engagingly written.

Diclofenac is an NSAID to relieve arthritis. Did you say it is given to cows? And then it's killing vultures who eat those cows?? 😱 What is diclofenac doing to us?

this episode was really great. it is so fascinating to hear about people's struggle with religion and preserving tradition in this modern and chaotic world. reality is a mess, but we keep yearning for something sacred.

it is fascinating to me that they worry about corrupting the element of fire in cremation. to me fire has always felt like something pure and incorruptible.

Glycine is an amino acid that has a single hydrogen atom as its side chain. It is the simplest stable amino acid (carbamic acid is unstable). Glycine is not widely used in foods for its nutritional value, except in infusions. Instead, glycine's role in food chemistry is as a flavorant.

Related to the adverse possession segment: back in the '70s, during the building of the M25 in Greater London, one of my cousins was active in the upper Darent Valley, running guided hikes along public rights of way to ensure their continuation - the key rule was that any right of way that had not been provably exercised for 10 years could be extinguished - so the M25 would be built, no matter what, but the upper Darent Valley is still very walkable to this day \m/

I've been too a couple autism friendly places before and the vast majority of them either do nothing to actually make things better, or they actively make them worse. For me its noise, echos, certain lights, and having to stand too close too other people. The best places were the ones that changed from those tube lights that flicker and hum to something else, or had anything to absorb some amount of sound. The attempts too focus on making something autism friendly miss the entire point. People dont like flickering lights, people dont like it when so much noise echos you can hear anything you want too. People dont like being crammed into a place with too many people. Making a place generally more pleasant to be in would do worlds more than anything focused on making something accessible for neurodivergents.

As a Connecticut resident until the late 1980s and a frequent visitor to New York City, I found this both entertaining and illuminating. I live in England now and I'm involved in town regeneration. I haven't read The Power Broker, and it is unlikely I'll have the discipline required to tackle it, but I'll keep listening to this podcast and will take copious notes in my head. Thank you.

Currently living in Germany and garbage disposers are not allowed. All food scraps are collected in a "bio" bin which includes vegetable scraps and yard waste. It is taken away, ground up, composted and then offered back to the community for free as mulch for gardens or yards. I'm not sure about meat (beef, chicken, pork, fish) scraps as my wife and I do not eat meat. But, I believe this is not allowed in the bio bin and must go in the general waste bin. It's been an adjustment after having a house for previous 10 years, in USA, with a garbage disposer, but not upsetting to daily living and takes very little effort to stay on top of our food waste. Plus, we have grabbed a few shovelfuls of mulch from the local recycling center. So we feel as though whatever inconvenience we may experience in taking care of our daily garbage management we get free mulch back; it seems fair.

Right…Weird remakes Devo did “Satisfaction,” Talking Heads did “Take me to The River” and Flying Lizards did “Money”…it wasn’t that they were covers…they were weird covers as new music was emerging with synthesizers. As music looked toward…well now…and beyond. DEVO before the Borg…
