Creatively Teaching

Creatively Teaching

I talk about creative ways to teach online and in-person (such as substitute teaching). I care a lot about teaching with passion and kindness in the brick and mortar and virtual classroom.

Use stickers as an incentive in middle school and high school... Even college students love stickers

All good points. As a sub, I think the best one is not take any behaviors personally.

If you accept a position as a long term Substitute, YOU will be responsible for ALL of your classes’ lessons (unlike the teacher here), and you will be in for a world of hurt! You will spend a LOT of extra time just putting lesson plans together, along with everything else your class needs…usually for NO extra pay! $$$$. This is a recipe for burnout. 👎🏿👎🏿👎🏿👎🏿👎🏿👎🏿

Yeah I think stickers and other little toys/trinkets would probably be best used as incentives for younger, elementary school students. For older kids in middle or high school, I would say the best incentives would probably be promising to do a fun activity or allowing a little bit of unstructured free time for them to chat or use their phones at the end of class. Definitely don't give food to any of them, it's too much of a liability with allergies and whatnot plus it can often be messy.

This was helpful. I subbed in a 1st grade class the other day and a few of the kids finished early. She had some extra work but I thought that was if the whole class finished there work now I realize I could have given it to those that finished early. I am very new at subbing...

I just started long term subbing for a 5th grade class whose teacher just up and left them abandoned. I now know why 😢. I've been subbing for over a year and this is by far my worst subbing experience to date! I am just not bonding with the kids, even though I've memorized almost all of their names. They won't stay in their seats, they give me the worst attitudes...things that I would NEVER allow from my own children. I don't know what to do!!! Sub coordinator suggested team building exercises for 10 minutes every morning, but I have no idea what that even means 😅 PLEASE help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, thank you very much for the video and all the tips. I have a question. You mentioned that if a student is not cooperating, has very bad behavior etc, you talked to he or she and try to earn their confidence.. When do you do that, after class or during class? I have several students that just won't cooperate at all and are just destroying the classroom. How would you handle them? They don't even listen to the principal. I teach K-4 (Music)

I remember in high school my trig teacher would get funny stickers or even just the scented ones sometimes and we would all show what stickers we got while she was passing back the rest of our papers. Even though we were 16-17 it was still something we enjoyed that kept us pure🫶🏻

I get the button lights from dollar tree! just 3 of them. They do go through batteries quickly. I then make and laminate numbers to represent the voice levels. I'll make a whole video on it this week and I'll tag you! :)

For new subs who have limited college coursework. Have elementary subs ever been in a situation with zero lesson plans and then my follow up question would be how do you go about teaching them all their subjects for that day?

As a new sub we were told in orientation and in a Zoom training class not to allow students to go to the restroom alone or even together. We will have to call the office and have someone come to the class to escort the students. Times have changed drastically since I was a student which was back in the 60's. I understand the reason behind this however. We have to keep track of students and a student might get distracted and wander around or worse, leave campus.

I had a 2nd grader ask about my foot tattoo. I said without missing a beat - it's a flower. Okay, as I was saying... I don't allow time for follow-up questions, and if they keep asking, I nicely say, "we're here to learn - not to talk about me." BUT here is a fun fact about me - I used to play basketball in high school! Then move along. Never say anything personal - which is common sense in many of the cases. Especially when certain subjects like politics and religion arise. This is my first year subbing. So far, I absolutely love it!

I took different schools every day, because same teacher is not gonna absent all days. The good thing with relocation, you will always learning about new schools and managements. I don't suggest if you don't want to be a teacher, but if teaching is in your blood and you wanna be a teacher I suggest you do that.

What I do is: 1. Ask the office if there are any assemblies or planned fire drills that day. 2. When class begins I explain my expectations, including my noise level rules. I use colored magnets (Red, Yellow, Green) and explain what each means. 3. I do attendance. 4. Explain rewards/consequences. I tell them that they will get to play games at the end of the day if they have good behavior and do their work. UNO, Sorry, or Prodigy on their chrome books. I start out with 30 minutes of game time for the end of the day and based on how the class is doing I add or take away minutes on the white board so everybody can see and they pay attention. 5. Establish an attention getter. I usually go with, "When I say CLASS you say YES." Then I will say it one or two times for the class to respond to. It makes it easier instead of trying to talk over the class when I need to speak.

A little bummed there wasn’t more on high school management. I’ve found this is the only school level I have issues with. Especially 9th graders. They don’t want to work, they are always playing on their cell phones and 9th graders especially try to push boundaries more than any other age group I’ve encountered.
