EA for Christians

EA for Christians

The official youtube channel for Effective Altruism for Christians.

We’re a group of Christians from across the world who are involved in the effective altruism (EA) movement. Our paths have crossed because we are all moved by God’s call to love beyond borders and because we believe that effective altruism helps us do that better.

    Helpful to see what may put people off EA. I think it does tend to be too futuristic. There is some pride in thinking you are working on the most important problems. Be an atheist points 6/7 dont resonate for me. But for people who want to make some difference surely picking a problem that is more important and where your time/money makes more difference is better? It does not mean you cannot support a favoured, less 'important' cause just because you like it. In fact Peter Singer suggests just that in "The Life You Can Save".

    I spent 15 years coming up with various schemes to help people in Central America. After the first 5 it was obvious that cash to individuals with whom I’m in personal contact is the most efficient way to give. All others involve intermediaries with incentives to not solve problems.

    I am grateful for Effective Altruism. After working with humanitarian service, it is changing the landscape. Data matters. That is why I like Effective Altruism.

  • @kevinlipps2817
    @kevinlipps28177 ай бұрын

    Effective Altruism isn't the problem. What people consider as Effective Altruism is the problem. People need to distinguish between the two. Effective Altruism is necessary. Humanitarian service needs to be backed up by data, which is Effective Altruism is needed. It is also important to analyze what people consider Effective Altruism. You have to carefully study, and understand what you are trying to help with. Effective Altruism is complex. A lot of the things necessary for Effective Altruism, are not always as presentable as smiling children, building wells, vaccines, and so on, even though those are good.

    One reason why God loves a cheerful giver, is because you are given out of your heart. You're not giving because it's an obligation. You are doing it out of your own free will, even though you don't have to. It is a big test. The people are voluntarily given to something because they want to, then the person that exudes the characteristics of Christ

  • @kevinlipps2817
    @kevinlipps28177 ай бұрын

    If you know what you're doing works better, then you're more confident about it. In a sense that would help you to be more cheerful about giving One of the reason why people don't want to give, is because they feel like it is a waste of money, doesn't work, or it doesn't make a difference when they give

This goes far beyond mere and deserved, when deserved ,cynicism; this is ponerogentic, Dark Triad spectrum, sort of stuff...

    I found this conversation to be deeply moving and honest. I believe it to be very hard indeed to help the poor. I have always believed that other cultures deserved to respected but helped in a manner that left their culture in tact. I would never impose my views on others…as the best in the world. I would learn what is helpful to that particular culture and try and use modern and up to date measure if I could…but never force something! I am an atheist.

    The solution to extreme poverty is known. It is the empowerment and emancipation of women. Release women from the tyranny of their reproductive cycle and role and the economic floor of every society rises. Religion is implacably against this idea.

In all my days I see western culture imposing its ideology upon other radically different cultures that encompass far more radical differences within their communities and outlying provinces than the western civilization could even begin to understand, and so the innocently ignorant 'do-gooders' at all levels ploughs on regardless and still the problems continue. Rory is a nice chap who seems to be genuinely caring, unlike 90% of the rest of his former party of brigands, racists and cultists, but he's still depressingly naive, probably because of his ridiculously privileged life. I think Rory may swing too far in the other direction. How do we know the autonomy and dignity of cash work? The research on micro-loans is mixed. It may be one tool in the toolkit. I think he inclines a bit too far towards seeing it as a panacea because of his ideological commitments. We should trust it as a method insofar as it works. No further. The results are mixed so my trust in the method is mixed.
