The world had been waiting for that confrontation since the controversial loss in 1972 but because of the boycotts it didn't happen. They would have to wait until 1988 and, unfortunately, the US was outclassed by a team featuring future NBA players Sarunus Marcillonis and Arvydas Sibonis.

A number of them such as Sam Bowie, Melvin Turpin, Keith Lee, Len Bias, and Kenny Smith did not go out for the team, perhaps due to the boycott of the Soviets. John Thompson, who coached the 1988 team, would have been a better coach for the 1984 team because of the depth and the fact he could have used all 12 players on the roster to play his pressure style of basketball which would have run any team off the court, including the Soviets
