I first ignored this ball because it may be too strong for me, but this review is giving me 2nd thoughts. Even though you're a Lefty Luke, I feel i bowl the same style on the right side (on 10, down and in). Right now i have an IQ Ruby (which I love) and I got a phaze 2 at the start of the summer for something stronger. I am not in love with the P2 and looking for alternatives to be that strong ball for me but something I can trust. Would the BW3 or BW2 Hybrid be that for me or do you have other suggestions as a stroker bowler (like the Intense Mindset like you mention)? Thank you so much for your videos!
What do you not like about the P2, or what are you looking for that it isn't giving you?
@@LukeRosdahl I feel like I leave a lot of pocket 7-10 or pocket 7’s with the P2. The shot seems to go longer at time, just doesn’t want to turn the corner that I’ve seen others can do. The ruby is such an amazing ball, but on a fresh pattern in the house I bowl at, it’s not the best for me. Once the lanes break down, the ruby is money and I usually finish the night with is and with great success.
Rick Ramsey said BJ & BTM at same center off-site All Star Lanes in Baton Rouge.
Women's Championships there at South Point they split coming out of squad room and don't walk all the way around and they don't have to carry their equipment either and put it out on the lanes before they walk out.
Black Widows are FAMOUS for overseas balls. The amount of Overseas Black Widow balls are insane.
Is Angel considered speed dominate?
She's kind of getting there, she used to be fairly matched but her speed is getting higher.
Angel’ it’s always good to watch you bowl. No I will try this ball @ box surface. Do you bowl 13lb or 14lb …. I would like to see Luke bowl with this since I am a lefty. Thanks for the great video
This one looks like it'll be the best big ball out. Along the lines of the Reality, plenty of strength but still gets some length and shape
Looks great for Angel. how would you compare with the Max Bias? If you were replacing a Proton Physix at the top of the bag, which would be your first choice?
This one would definitely be the better replacement. I think the Max Bias is a little earlier and smoother as well as a couple boards weaker.
@@LukeRosdahl thank you. Appreciate the reply
For me the Gem was the typical, read early and roll forward. Fine for playing on heavy oil down and in with a straight projection. But I could not go around the lane with it at all. The Mesmerize looks much better than the Gem. As least for Angel. It seems to shape and have energy in the back.
I have a GEM and a Hammer Envy as a great 1-2 punch for that reason. The Extreme Envy looks even better for that
Probably going to get the vaporize. I’m a sucker for older vintage cores. Can’t wait to see your review and your thoughts on the vaporize versus intense mindset. Also free shirt promo!
My favorite part is now Panda Bear talking at the end!!
I love the look of the Mesmerize, but if I already have the Track Archetype solid and the Brunswick Mindset and Ebonite Big Time Special Edition, is there a place in my arsenal for this one? Or do the other balls react close enough to the same?
Probably not. It's a marginally stronger Mindset really. If you're looking to replace one of those, it'd absolutely be at the top of the list, but if you're set for now, no reason to go with this one.
What surface did Angel put on the Wicked? Thanks
2000 grit for the Wicked, looks really good.
@@LukeRosdahl Thanks, I was going to do 3000 as a test. Her style is very close to mine so it's a very good barometer.
Hi Angel! Always good to get Luke’s perspective on equipment and watch Angel get a few throws in. 4 good balls and some bowling lessons are what I’m focusing on now. Kinda burned out from carrying multiple tournament totes.
Luke is very good at the talking part!
Did Royal Crest switch to string machines?
Nope
@@LukeRosdahl huh, they look and sound so different in the shots with the Mesmerize, and the sweep never comes down. What changed?
Not a thing. Rack was a little slower than normal, but same pins and same everything we've been bowling on for a while.
@@LukeRosdahl fair enough
I missed out on the No Rules series of balls...
That trios tournament sounds cool but logistically it makes no sense for 99% of the women
Reno - Pegs Glorifed Ham and Eggs is FTW and more budget friendly but I agree on the negative effects of renovations and issues with stadium. Pegs is about 3/4 mile walk from the Row.
Vegas at least has a lot of tourist areas and options for activities to keep you busy for quite a few trips outside gambling. Obviously if you’re a foodie like me it is paradise. Thats what keeps me coming to USBCs. If I bowl bad at least I eat well.
South Point is generally alot of fun and good food in there and around the area.
I agree on drinking and inappropriate behavior. Lane staff or director need to take action on that.
We had a guy get his spare ball disqualified, they said it was drilled upside down. It was the Storm breast cancer ball. WTF
Tournament director (Chip) was no help when we were attempting to sub a bowler for doubles.
WHAT KIND OF SPINNER IS THAT?
Innovative 1/2hp
Bowling has the unique problem of being the largest participation sport. Getting anything good to happen is like trying to herd cats. Still a fun game though
Largest participation sport? There were more high school football players in the 2009-2010 school year than the total membership of the USBC today.
Think he meant people that go bowl, not just league bowlers. Bowling is technically the largest participation game in the world
I kind of get the you have to be in tournament dress to be in the squad room rule. They don't know for sure that you're going back up to shower or whatever, it's the only place in the building where you know you have to be a bowler to enter, and it's the last "choke point" before going out on the lanes. You have to go in there to check your balls in and see those 4-5 people at that desk, whereas if you leave and come back you don't. That way they're not checking legs in the rows, they're not holding up the "march of athletes" or whatever they call it. It's one checkpoint instead of checking 30 pairs of lanes split on either side of the seats, and you don't get someone all flustered/pissed off because they have to go change and/or find pants as practice is starting.
Yeah we kind of acknowledged that a bit later. It's less of a can of worms just pissing people off on the front end.
I hadn’t heard anything about where the BJ or any side events will be but Baton Rouge only has one center still open unlike in 2012 there was three centers open. The good thing is the center that’s open is a 64 lane center. There is a Family fun center with 24 lanes that has has leagues outside of BR but that going to be over 30mins away.
My experience with USBC bowling the Florida Open championships (doubles & singles) in 2023 was so incredibly bad I can't imagine spending big bucks to bowl nationals. Everything you said I experienced and then some. We were given a 3pm squad time, confirmed by email. We show up at 2:00 to check in and they said your squad time was changed to 9am and you missed your squad. They claimed to have sent an email but we never got any email from them. After 20 minutes of back and forth they gave us another date for about 6 weeks later. We show up for our squad and were paired with two older couples. The men were lefties and the women were plastic up the middle style. They went to the bar and ordered shots between frames and were shit faced by the time singles started. We were constantly waiting on them to bowl and as they got more rowdy and inappropriate, we were looking around for USBC staff to step in. One of the women was giving a lap dance to her husband during game 2 of singles, and he was smacking her ass. No staff anywhere at all to step in. On the pair next to us, there was a lady drunk on something, screaming various obscenities at the pins and her partners all day long. No staff to shut her up. People were taking smoke breaks every 15 minutes, between guzzling beers and tipping the strippers they were having quite a day. Considering all of this went down with nobody from USBC stepping in, I can't spend a dime on their events after this experience.
Well to be fair that would have been your local/state association running that which is different from USBC themselves actually running it with paid employees. A state or city tournament is run by state or city board members which are all volunteers. However . . doesn't sound much different from how USBC runs things anyway lol . .
We were on 1&2 and you had to float it as you are saying and it was so over under.
The problem I had with the 3.0 as a PSO was that it didn’t hook hardly at all out of the box. I drilled over 20 of them the first month or so it came out and all of them had to get hit with a 500-1000 pad so that it’d hook.
Huh. Definitely an oddly smooth ball based on what I was expecting, but didn't hear about any reacta gloss type issues with it.
@@LukeRosdahl yeah after I hit them with a pad, even some I took to 3000 for some lower speed players they hooked much more and honestly what I was expecting them to hook in the first place. Some of the college guys I drill for noticed this too and a resurface out of the box was what it needed to meet expectations.
Is this ball overlapping with vebo and zgl?
Yeah I think so, it's not supposed to but it does.
I’m just getting back into league after being away since Covid. I love this ball. I also have an OG Phaze. Can you give a recommendation on what would be similar to this in today’s market? The ion? Optimum Idol? Thanks!
The Track Cypher is virtually identical to the Rocket Ship, and the OG Phaze replacement would definitely be the Summit Peak! I have a video for the Cypher and several for the Peak if you want to take a look first to see if they pass the eye test.
I'm with you, lefty with decent speed and revs. I loved the 2.0 Hybrid and used it almost exclusively in winter league season. But the ball started looking lazy downlane and when the weather got hot in NY, I left it in car and it sweated a ton of oil, a few times. Cleaned it up, hit it with 3000 and it was still acting lazy. Picked up the 3.0 based on most reviews saying it was a few boards stronger than the 2.0 hybrid. I can't keep the 3.0 on the lane anywhere. If I play inside it looks ok but my wheel house is to chuck it outside. It just hooks off the lane and I can't control the reaction. Tried polishing it up and while that gave some additional length the ball just became super flippy. I just left the 2.0 hybrid with my PSO to do a full resurface to see if that brings the reaction back somewhat. If not, I just may pick up another 2.0 hybrid. Was thinking a 3.0 hybrid may appear at some point. Also looking at the DNA coil as its selling at reduced prices and looking like it may be discontinued in a few months. The infinite physix I picked up last year when it got discontinued it picking up the slack this summer.
Yep, a little too strong. As a surface experiment, I just did a change to 3000# surface. Hope it works.....
Are you able to compare the Black Widow 3.0 and X-cell? On paper, they look very similar!
If I get an X-Cell I might, but I'm not sure I'm going to get one of those. Having seen a lot of both though, the X has a weaker cover, so it's not quite as strong, but is a fair amount sharper or more responsive.
I throw mine with surface game 1, and move to stay with it for game 2, by game 3 it has lane shined enough to still be useful…. Love that ball!!!! A+++ for me
You shocked me with a B+. But I'd argue an A- at worst case. So I guess B+ is fair.
I (James) definitely think the B+ is warranted. Sure it doesn't see a ton of lane time in league right now, but it's an absolute lock for tournaments and has a vital role in my arsenal when on higher friction surfaces. Solid but not a home run for everyone... kinda makes sense :)
@ShimWreckerEnterprises I'm on a medium friction, heavy oil lanes. As an individual sometimes we dont see how all the bowling world is. This ball is the go to in that house. Now, that's why I said the score was fair because of high friction places. I visited a few centers in Lower Michigan, brunswick lanes majority of bowlers had the 3.0. Go to higher friction AMF lanes and the majority had the 2.0 hybrid.
Another consideration though when saying that an Intense Mindset is very close, get that instead...well, it's also like $30 more
Well, I was just referring to the ball reaction, not the cost. They feel familiar or related or like complements, cost doesn't affect that one way or the other. Might affect a purchase decision, but ball reaction is ball reaction.
Appreciate your straightforwardness on your reviews and updates. This ball just looks bad a$$. Good stuff sir!
I love this ball on game 1 after that i have to move or change to the envy tour pearl.
If BW3.0 is too strong, but you really like the shape, wouldn't the BW2.0 be a natural choice. I know it's been around awhile, but it's still in the lineup, and I still see them thrown.
Yeah but the 2.0 is a little bit later down lane and a little quicker downlane. But the shape is similar
I think the Intense is closer to the 3.0 shape than the 2.0 is. 2.0 is a rounder shape rather than the arcy look of the 3.0 and Intense.
Right now in the summer BW 3 is game 1 only (4K surface). Generally been using it to setup my envy tour pearl.
That's exactly what I do.
If the BW 3.0 is a little too strong and smooth for you, a BW 2.0 might be perfect. It's cleaner and sharper than the 3.0, but still very controllable. It's still in the current Hammer line and can be found for around $130 so it's a bit of a bargain.
I have the 2.0 & rang so many 10 pins on multiple occasions its never coming back out of the bag
@@alexjoseph4665 you might have had it drilled too strong. I only like black widows when they are pin down. Pin up they hook early and go forward.
@@andrewweltlich9065 it is drilled too strong you're right. Gonna drill them pin down from now on
Great video!!!?
Thanks Luke. I picked up a BW 3.0 as a re-drill in March. I got mine drilled pin down to make it more usable for myself. It is a banger! A- for me.
I have 3 black widows that are all drilled pin down and I love them. I have a 2.0 solid, 2.0 hybrid, and XR pearl (overseas ball with the Envy pearl coverstock). Pin down works really well on the gas mask core because of how crazy high the differential is.
So what's your opinion? Shiny or no?
Definitely like it better with the hard box shine knocked off, but I don't think it needs to be DULL
I have the regular infinity and it's one of my favorite balls all time. Would I like this one? What new ball is closest the the original infinity ?
Yeah if you like the original, this one is definitely in that same territory. This one would be the closest by a mile.
