Who’s on piano? And is that Ziggy Elman playing the trumpet solo? Sensational. It’s pretty amazing to realize that so many years after the Swing era that Benny could attract a standing room only crowd to such a big venue. Not a chance of that happening nowadays.

BG never disappoints! This band has a happy swing with burning solos. I think it looks like Stan Levey on drums ~1:43-1:53.

Wow, what an incredible band and what incredible energy. Benny is clearly NOT going to let that trumpet player get the best solo in this number and he just releases it. Incredible!

He was like a computational machine with a heart. Incredible technical virtuosity with an innate grasp of the gist of the piece and complex phrasings that are superhuman in scope. All without looking at the keyboard. Like going for a Sunday stroll.

He possessed something uniquely special, far different and beyond even what the other giants of 20th century jazz piano, such as Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson, could ever achieve.

It's so incredibly ironic to me that the original song was devised to disenchant the audience in Brecht's conception of estrangement from the emotional content in order to get them thinking about the sociopolitical implications. I'm not sure Brecht or the composer Kurt Weil would love the transformation, complete with key changes to 'raise the tension' in the music.

I completely agree with you. But still it's a real 'show-stopper' at the end of a performance with all the modulations (one half note up of all the time).

Right after the intro, Erroll looks left and smiles at Eddie Calhoun as if to say.... we're on the same page. There is so much joy in Erroll Garner's playing.

Garner could read music? So why is he looking around the room? Surely the music is written on the walls and faces of the people in the audience. His eyes are not even on the keyboard.

I love the guy. It was a pity he left the sustained pedal depressed through many phrases, instead of using it to bracket the phrases. He never gave it any thought. This really degraded his music.
