Freeman Metal Works

Freeman Metal Works

Shortly after teaching middle school Social Studies for the first time (Ancient Civilizations), I thought it would be cool to cast my own historically-faithful bronze sword. That Spring Break (March/April of 2021), I started metal casting as a new hobby. After watching lots and lots and lots of casting videos and following dozens of casting channels, and after nine months of my own casting, I decided to start putting my own vidoes on KZread. Who knows, maybe I'll have something started to keep me out of trouble after retirement (in just a few years). 😉

    Chatter, I asked my daughter about that before the pour (off camera). She was concerned about contaminating the soap. I do not know the ins and outs of her soap making (all-nature or organic or anything she might have going on there), but with her being a chemist, I deferred to her judgement on using any sort of release. Thanks for the comment, Chatter. I'm sure others were thinking the same way you and I were.

    Constructive feedback, the algorithm recommended me this, so I watched the whole thing (on mute) to help you out. Intro is way too long. Lots of boring footage. Music is obnoxious. Some places to improve. Hope you find success in the future!

    I apologize if I suggested that he was wrong. I did not mean to say that at all. I don't know, though, if I would say it was true that most don't care about intros, but you could be right in that. I will disagree about most rather see more steps/talk in depth about what I'm doing. It does not matter, according to the stats that I am seeing on my videos if I make them short and only show some of what I am doing, or if I show and explain everything I am doing. This is one reason I wanted to try AI. I was hoping I could just send it all of my footage and have it make a video that was half-way decent. It looks like my videos have the same amount of viewed time whether I put in a lot of effort in it, or put in less effort in it. Since my effort didn't seem to make as much of a difference as I would have liked, I decided to make the videos that I was happy with at the time I made them. I do like my intros; however, with my next video, I'll put a note as to where someone can skip to to avoid the intro all together. @@IIIAnchani

    The dremal sanding was painful to watch. How many hours were you there sanding? You really need to get a real belt sander. It would pay for itself, it dremal bits alone, not to mention time and your sanitary. But great job getting it done with what you have. I only say this because I myself have spent way to much time using a dremal. 2x72 belt sander saved me. I made my own at first.

    1. If your sand was straight out of the bag it wasn't dry. It has to be completely dry. I put mine on concrete to suck out the moisture. 2. You stopped pouring in the middle of it. As soon as you stop pouring the sand will cave in and you'll have a failed cast. 3. You used a piece of aluminum for your pouring cup... It melted. That's why I used steel soup cans.

    some boron spray may have helped there, I think that is the stuff I've used before when pouring copper and brass into light weight molds to keep it from sticking. I've also seen others do that for alum on alum pours like you were doing. Stuff isn't real cheap, but it lasts for a few pours each spray from what I recall.

    I plan to make this pour this weekend (with the video sechedule for Dec. 13). That's my biggest concern, crucible capacity. I didn't think about it one bit until after I initially cut out the foam pieces. Then, after spending all that time doing that, I had to decide if I was wanted to keep going, or scrap what I had done and retry after resizing the project. I decided to press on, if for no other reason than gained experience. And it will make for an interesting video (I hope). I already have in mind what I will need to do for my secod attempt. I'm also thinking about swtiching to investment/ceramic slurry instead of plaster. Dipping/submerging the foam will probably do a better job of getting into the nooks and crannies of the piece, which include two tunnels. There is only one real problem that I can "see" in my head with what I have in mind if/when I need to make that second attempt . . . it will probably need to be asymmetric. I love symmetry. Ahhhh . . . it's part of the journey.

    So question Brother Freeman, is this entire process just to pull metal for scrapping/recycling purposes? I don't really understand but I want to learn more about what my favorite people are doing in their videos.

  • @freemanmetalworks1698
    @freemanmetalworks169811 ай бұрын

    The very first reason for doing all of this was to see if I could recycle enough metal off of PC boards to make one of my Imperial ingots. I figured my students would think it was cool to make a bar of metal out of computer parts. But then I started watching other videos, videos from Screetips and started thinking that after I make my ingot, maybe I could chemically separate each of the metals I recover from the PC boards. I'm not sure it makes a lot of sense for an individual to try to recycle metal from PC boards in the garage. I've seen videos where large amounts of material is process and lots of metal is recovered, but I'm not sure that process scales down very well. So, I'm thinking I'll probably stop at a single ingot when it is all said and done (and after I get a couple more videos out of the whole process).

    I’m looking forward to seeing this cast and how it works out. My friend that I made the goonies key for told me I need to get a 3D printer. Truth be told, aside from not having room for one in my already crowded small home, I’m also not wanting to spend time having to learn new terminology, learning software, and fine tuning a machine that I’ve no experience with. But then I see things like this and it makes me wonder if my fear and/or laziness in sticking with my own methods is holding me back. Maybe if I can be consistent with what I’m doing and making I’ll consider it.

  • @freemanmetalworks1698

    There has been soooo much equipment creep in this hobby. Just as I am sort of getting comfortable with my 3D printer, I seeing all sorts of reasons to get a resin printer. I've got a second multi-step project that I am working on alongside this plant stand (the first part of that project lands next week), and I ended up buying some equipment for it (that ended up being the second step of that project). In my head I think I know how that will work, but until I start in on it, who knows. Yeah, unexpected expense and learning curve. I think there is a life principle in this somewhere, but I haven't had my coffee yet this morning, so I'll have to dig out it out later.😉
