How is this the first time I’m discovering Pia Douwes, after watching musical theatre videos and stuff for decades?! She even says “fuck it” at 2:15 and does away with that awful modulation on the “With one look I’ll ignite a blaze” line that they put in for Glenn Close - and goes even higher! It’s totally thrilling.

I'm pretty sure it's all about the language.. But I'm curious why ti became si for the Russian lyrics.
@martakheyfets22354 жыл бұрын
That's what Russians always call it in musical notation. Now why that is, I have no idea.
@timcook816 Жыл бұрын
The seventh note used to be "si" in English too. It was changed to "ti" to avoid having two notes start with an "s" ("so" and "si"). That might seem a trivial reason, but it's a problem when you add sharps and flats. So-sharp is called "si" and so-flat is "se" (pronounced "say"). If the seventh note is also "si," then si-flat would also be "se." The whole doremi system comes from the first syllable of the seven lines of a Gregorian chant. The chant starts out on the syllable "ut," which the French still use for "do," but for everyone else, it was changed to "do." There are various explanations for where "do" came from.

I think its supposed to just be completely gaudy. She's clearly like thrown together everything she has in her wardrobe to film the scene and impress everyone with how much of a star she thinks she is. But she's also completely snapped, her ability to even recognize what she's done is gone- so I'm not surprised she can't put together a good costume 😂

She couldn't sing the role the first time around. Why, when she's clearly 20 years too old for the role now at nearly 70 and they say right in the script Norma is 50.... would she sign on to a role she knows she's no longer right for? Every actor knows their limits, and this was just an embarrassment.

Her age is unimportant. Norma Desmond can be anywhere from 50 to 80. She's demented, she's living in the far and distant past. Miss Close knows this and so does Mr. Webber. Miss Close is ageless and it was imperative that she put this performance on film as an immortal symbol to her great artistry. Her instincts are as sharp as ever.
