  Many years after hearing this filk, I finally got around to reading the Moore stories (you can borrow the collection electronically through Overdrive from your library). It was kind of cool to read the stories behind the song, but I wasn't prepared for the weirdness. If they had been written in the 1960s I would have supposed LSD were involved (like Silverberg's 'Son of Man'), but this was the late 1930s. Definitely worth the read!

  My only complaint is the inclusion of the word "shotgun". There are no shotguns ever mentioned and I'm sure that some other word could have been found.

  There's another song about a similar incident from the perspective of two survivors who became Oathsworn and tracked the creature down. I remember the line " never waste your pity on the snow"

  Yes, there is. It is the tie in for the book Oathbreakers by Mercedes Lackey. It's part of the Vows and Honors series but can be enjoyed on it's own.

  I like the art work of Talia but I some how don't see all of the heralds having cream cloaks ? I have got the imagine of them having grey or perhaps dark blue ones. the picture of Talia on the cover of my book shows her with a blue one. I understand the trainees have grey ones

  is the singer meant to Kero's Grand mother Keth. I believe she told this story to the Shin'a'In after she was proven to be a good mage. I understand that Tarma's people where un sure about magic after the mass murder of the hawk clan by a evil mage.

  just finished reading the last herald mage and found the last story very moving especially where Van is tortured after being captured by a gang of bandits and Steven sorry if I got his name wrong here, is allowed to ride a companion.

  A detail from the books is how tarma complains that the bard got the details of their disguises wrong. In the song, it says the lady is the swordswomen and the maid is the mage, but it was actually the other way around because kethry was so tired from holding a bunch of illusion spells for days that she couldn't do anything but sit in a wagon and try not to drool on herself. Tarma was constantly feeding her and giving her water, but that only sold the story that they were a rich noble lady with a drug habit and her maid.

  @@stefanc3651 "oathbreakers" by Mercedes Lackey. It is the 2nd book in the Oathbound trilogy. The trilogy is a collection of adventures following 2 women, Tarma and Kethry. Tarma is a warrior priestess and Kethry is a sorceress. They work as mercenaries that primarily save young women because Kethry is soulbound to a magic sword that compels its user to save women

  I was hooked on the Valdemar series with Magic's Pawn. Loved all the books. Just finished Valdemar and made the connection between Restil and Windrider! Now, I can hear the song Vanyel sang!
