Can't beat a Fender bass!! The guitar is my main instrument but I occasionally play bass for recording and such. Larry Graham is definitely a big influence on my bass playing to where I use a pick on some tracks just like Larry occasionally uses a pick.

While there is no mistaking that Larry Graham is the father of Thumping (Slap Bass) and Marcus Miller is the new reigning Prince, I find it interesting and incredible when Verdine White suddenly comes alive and hits that "Serpentine Fire" bass lick around minute 9:50 of this video. LOL I've been a Larry Graham fan since he first started and I remember buying Marcus Miller's first album and thinking I was better than him (boy, was I stupid), but when it comes down to it for all of us bass players, NO ONE will ever have the stage presence and legacy of hits that Verdine White has. He is simply a BEAST on stage and those Earth, Wind & Fire bass lines are UNTOUCHABLE.

What exquisite playing by Marcus and Larry. As for Verdine, I struggle with the notion that he is not playing. While any "normie" can see he is touching the bass, riddle me this: why cant we hear him? OP suggests there were signal chain errors, but perhaps Verdine's status as a showman and not necessarily an upper tier bassist such as Jeff Allison, Terrance Palmer, and Wayman Tisdale has something to do with this as well. As an astute commenter under OP's thread argued, "No bass player does that. You swap cables, etc until you are heard." This commenter's sentiment rings so clearly true. Yet, no one can deny Verdines great playing on the hit Earth, Wind, and Fire classics. These do show Verdine the skills to play among exceptional musicians. It is a truly a mystery.

All greats but I hate to say it but the youngster Marcus is the most technically sound and the most able to just get after it. Not hating on Larry, but also Verdine is a classic goat but never a heavy hitter in the bass world!! Still a blssing to see these guys together!! Thx!!
