    One extra feature that I think would be awesome is interchangeable masks (69, 612 etc) which can be hot swapped intra roll. That could be a whole other can of worms - but lots of fun… Not sure how I missed this when it first came out; the results are spectacular

  • @thefilmlaundry
    @thefilmlaundry13 күн бұрын

    Hmmmm, interesting. Doing it mid roll does add a bit of extra complexity, but I can't see why a mask made of the same spring steel as the Darkside (painted black of course) couldn't be made to insert in the camera side of the film plate, there a few mm of room there and the spring steel is very thin, then you would just need to adjust what you frame up in the ground glass (although that's easy with added guidelines. Honestly the biggest complication would probably be in keeping what frames you need to wind on too right in your head. I'm just finishing up building a Polaroid back for a Hasselblad, I'll have a bit of a look at this problem once that's done. Glad you enjoyed the build.

  • @bernardkealey6449
    @bernardkealey644913 күн бұрын

    @@thefilmlaundry yes, it does add complexity to the workflow, and you’d have to either sacrifice a bit of film on the change over, or make decision which mask you’re using next before winding on. there is some real beauty in the Fuji/voigtlander 66/67 with the internal switch (only accessible when film is out) which just moves each side in or out 5mm; it also changes the wind stop - but they opted for a knob rather than winding lever for that and it’s the biggest complaint most folk have about that camera. But… up-scaling a single 5mm each side move to graduations totalling 40mm each side to get from 6x9 to 6x17 and doing it intra roll, with automatic winder limitations would be quite the challenge… Good luck with the Polaroid back!

    does this Chroma camera shoot 220 film?

  • @thefilmlaundry
    @thefilmlaundry25 күн бұрын

    Not really, due to the lack of backing paper on 220 and this also frame numbers (which you need to know you have wound the film on enough for each frame) it would t really work. I suppose you could tape up the frame window and figure out how many turns of the film winding knob you need to do for each shit, but it would be pretty hit or miss. Best to stick to 120 film.

    One further thought, not a new thought actually, I was thinking about this long before my camera was even purchased once I realised doing it for the Hasselblad would be far harder than I'd initially thought. I would like to be able to put glass plates into the Shen Hao. I know no-one makes these in 6x17, but I have almost all the stuff to make them myself now, with the final barrier being unexpected difficulties encountered while initially converting the garage in the house we just bought into a darkroom. Basically it needs a new roof first. Right now I have half a kilo of silver nitrate crystals and a box of glass sheets sat doing nothing, along with lots of other chemicals that will probably expire before I get to use them. So I have the equipment and no clear timetable, which is just awesome...

    this does look interesting, but an original shen Hao film back is only a little over twice what you spent in money and made out of very solid metal. I have considered a 3D printer for some things, but I decided against a 3D printed 6x17 camera because I was concerned about its longevity. Small companies are popping up that will print things for you, so I doubt I'll buy a printer myself now. My Shen Hao 6x17 was expensive, granted, but I don't see it failing or wearing out providing I take care of it. Also it came with two film backs which I wasn't expecting at all. I did buy it directly from Shen Hao rather than via Ebay through an importer, so it's possible I got a better deal, as most sellers advertise it as including one roll film back.

  • @thefilmlaundry
    @thefilmlaundryАй бұрын

    Oh for sure, honestly the main reason wasn't about saving money, I'm a firm believer in spending money on well made gear will never be a bad thing (my collection of Leica's and Hasselblads and empty bank accounts can attest to that). It was more about seeing if I could do it, using it as a learning experience and also something to help build my 3d modelling skills. If I'm honest, I pretty much can guarantee I will buy a Shen Hao at some stage, but not until my skills demand all that it can do.

    Forgot to add, the way put it together was, I just the plate on the camera and mounted the arms to the grou d glass with the double sided tape and then added a small dot of hot glue to each of the parts that will be screwed to the plate and put them in place so they were at the right placement so the arms were parallel with the ground glass and move freely, then once I was happy I gingerly unscrewed the plate from the camera so as not to break the hit glue and added the self tapping screws for strength. This was you can put the whole thing on the camera and get the right placement first and just use hit glue to hold it until you add the screws. If that makes any sense 😂

    When I recently bought my Shen Hao non folding 6x17 new I was extremely worried about the purchase. Mostly about where to get it from, which I solved by going to a physical shop in the UK with a price that included everything, the taxes, import duties and a post import check on the camera. The next thing was the massive cost of a spare film back, in the UK that's a thousand pounds, no small amount. For some reason my camera arrived with two film backs in the box instead of the one I was expecting. Nothing I'd read had led me to think this would happen so I am what you might call extraordinarily delighted. That spare would have cost me a third of the price for the camera. I got a spare ground glass too. My 4x5 is a Chroma Carbon Adventurer. I considered his 6x17, but the discontinuation of his field camera line almost immediately after my purchase rather put me off buying another of his products. I'd hoped to be buying into a line that would see improvements I could upgrade to, not a dead end. The Shen Hao non folding 6x17 is a work of art that I'm slowly learning how to use.

I walked around for about 10km up there after sunset trying to find my way out. Thankfully I retraced my steps via strava - not too reliable but it saved me that day. Its a fantastic place and I was happy with my results but I was told later that "Little Drift" nearby is aesthetically better...next time I'm down there I'll go check it out (albeit with someone else next time).

    Oh wow, yeah, that would have been a hard slog, even without getting lost 🤦🏻‍♂️ I hadn't heard of the little drift, just googled it, well now I know what I'm shooting next, thanks for the heads-up.

    Perhaps you should sacrifice a roll of Foma 100 to find light leaks? You should try to test out the film holder itself with the darkslide in. Simply let the film holder lay with dark slide facing the sun for a few minutes. Advance to the next frame and try again with the film holder having the dark slide facing away from the sun. Next frame, no lens ( but with a lens board blocking the front standard), with the film holder attached and no dark slide let the camera be hit by the sun from the upper right, advance the frame and try again this time with the sun shining on the camera from the upper left. This should give you plenty of clues as to where the light leak is actually appearing. You could then try adding several layers of black plastic over the bellows and repeating the process. Then try to expose one part of the bellows to the sun, letting the rest of the bellows be covered by black plastic etc.

    That's awesome! Inspiring as hell. As for your light leak... did you check the bottom of your lens board. You did modify something around there, didn't you? Added some piece of plastic.... Taken into account, that a light leak is somehow rounded at the bottom left part of the image and that there is some lens flare effect, I would check the lens board / fitting.

  • @thefilmlaundry
    @thefilmlaundry4 ай бұрын

    Good suggestion, as it turns out the leak was very close to there, it was a small gap where the front standard was glued on, only opened up when the bellows were retracted for the 90mm lens, that's why I didn't notice it with the bellows fully out.

  • @thefilmlaundry
    @thefilmlaundry4 ай бұрын

    So quick update, unjust got the new bellows and glued them in, and wow, what a difference. Then, as a 'why the hell not' I got the torch in around the edges of the lens board, and now that the leak from the bellows was not in the way, guess what, you were right, there was the faintest light leak on the left and right sides of the lens board near the top. I could t see it before because the bellows leak was more noticeable. Anyway, I added a small felt gasket around the 3d printed spacer and whammo, no more leaks. So thanks for the suggestion I would have never even thought of that as being a problem, it looked so well sealed, but I was wrong 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Thanks for your great video. I have recently purchased the chroma 6x17 too but have only managed to get out with it twice so far. First time with tripod using focusing screen and yesterday using it hand held and zone focusing. I haven't developed yesterdays film yet but am interested to see how that comes out. As you said shooting 6x17 is very strange and will take some time to become familiar with it and be able to pre-visualise. One great thing I did learn from your video was not to actually remove the dark slide because its very awkward to re-insert. I have now marked my darkslide so that I know how high I can lift it up to clear the film area but keep it within the actual camera. Thanks again and I look forwards to seeing more of your images.

    I have the Fujinon SW 135 it's a great lens, very sharp. I recently got the 90 Fujinon as well which I believe will fit with the proper lens cone, not as sharp as the 135 with a bot of distortion on the edges. I'm glad I got the 135 first as it has taught me a lot

    Hello 👋 I have feeling that tape around your ground glass it’s making your focusing not perfection

  • @thefilmlaundry
    @thefilmlaundry4 ай бұрын

    Hi, actually o don't show it in the video but I removed the tape from the camera side of the glass, it was redundant and also just in case. So there is actually only tape on the top side that can't effect focus. On revising the footage I shot of me taking the test doxusbahot I realised o had inadvertently added a slight amount of shift to the rear standard which would account for the focus change.

    So much awesome! Hope that the new bellows do come as described and give no hassles. Truly inspiring stuff. I hope that the tensioning between the spools stays firm and consistent over time; given you don’t have a pressure plate tension is probably the weakest link for keeping focus across the actual in camera plane. My dog looks forward to the future series where you make your own 6x17 enlarger 😉

  • @thefilmlaundry
    @thefilmlaundry4 ай бұрын

    Yeah, I basically replicated the Chromas design on film advance and that hasn't got a pressure plate either and I have had no issues, I have added a felt pad to the back that takes the place of a pressure plate, and as far as I can see the ShenHao hasn't got one other, so fingers crossed. Haa, I just sold my darkroom gear, was taking up too much space 🤣

    I designed my own 3D printed roll film back for use on the shen hao, and then I made the back able to convert to a point and shoot camera as well, since I can use that right away. I posted a bit about it on largeformat forums a few weeks ago. I have lever action film advance on mine. I'm building my own ebony/shen hao 6x17 field camera though because of the cost to buy a new or used version. I need to wait for better weather to set up my wood working shop before I can get to the wood camera build though
